Very close. Over last 4 years, both have 4.2 WAR. I'd give the edge to Marisnick as his Chris Carter that can play OF approach this season looks real and would be an average starting player.
Maybin very well could become a very important acquisition in the playoffs. I could absolutely see a scenario where it's the 8th or 9th and we have a 1 run lead. Someone slow singles. Maybin comes in and steals second. We drive in an insurance run going up 2. Giles comes in gives up a run but ultimately gets the save. Something so simple, so rather insignificant, could be so extremely vital to success in the playoffs.
Actually, that's not quite you said. Your post implied it only made sense if they were shipping someone out for Verlander. Shipping our Fisher was the only reasonable scenario that satisfied your statement.
The Astros probably felt like that was a real possibility, so they grabbed insurance incase that's what it took to finish the deal.
Not only that, you also can have a 9 inning out fielders lineup with Maybin / Marisnick / Springer which are all top tier center fielders which will be an upgrade to the teeth comparing to have Reddick.
honestly Marisnicks defense has dropped lately. won't comment on his batting as Maybin isnt an upgrade, but having maybin in center would be clutch as he can cover the entire outfield.
No doubt! I was just responding to everyone saying Jake can Rake AND play defense. And I was just seeing that his raking has dropped and actually his defense has gone down. It is still elite, but Maybin is a lot like Jake. Basically I was arguing they are more the same than Jake being flat out better.
I'd agree with that, Jake's metrics are down this year a bit. Springer has statistically been our best centerfielder this season.
Maybin hitting .275 this year against LHP. With the speed and defense, this is a highly useful acquisition.
Are there any metrics to back up Maybin being a great defensive OFer? Luhnow has to have some but if I remember his career defensive numbers were nothing special.
Has Maybin ever blown a game by throwing the ball to a cutoff man when he could've easily prevented a run by throwing it home? Take a seat Jake you bum.
DRS and URZ have him as a replacement level in CF for his career and is 29th and 15th for this year, respectively. 2015-2016 were rough, though.
Yeah, I just looked them up myself. I remember checking his numbers earlier this year when he looked like Willie Mays against us. At best it seems he's just OK. But he is versatile defensively, and fast. What this deal really tells me is that we don't think Fisher is ready to help us offensively.
