To be fair I don't think teams are trashing him, it's the fans in full speculation mode. When they know we're going for Melo, it's a buyers market
There's a difference between Ryno's contract being horrible or other teams willing to absorb the entire thing just to help the Rockets become another super team. Did Ryno play like **** in the playoffs? Absolutely. But, he is still a perfect fit for us at the 4. We just prefer the star power of Melo and a banana boat dream, but keeping Ryno another year isn't going to hurt anything.
Forget Ryno the player for a minute and consider where the Knicks are. They are not looking for a stretch four to make their offense work for their superstar guard. They are a team that is a full rebuild. Anderson the player isn't what they need AND he has a big contract.
I generally agree, but having Ryan as a starter in the playoffs will absolutely hurt us, which is why we're trying to make this trade.
actually they're making the trade because you're getting a significant upgrade. thats always been the plan if the opportunity came along
This what a lot of people don't understand. RA's contract is tough to move because of all the bloated deals given out to underachieving bigs in recent years. All those contracts given out, which are worse than RA's, destroyed the flexibility of other teams that would be options for us today in a 3-team trade. Imagine a GM telling his boss that he's got two non all-star players...Mozgov/Mahinmi/Monroe/ and RA locked up for over 110 mil for the next 3 years.
Gotcha. I forgot to double the years before adding the 1. However, that probably makes it even less likely the Knicks would want to buy him out because they would be putting forward dead money into additional years. So, even if Carmelo agreed to $45M, stretched over the 5 years, the Knicks would only be taking up $12M more for Anderson (or, really about $10.4M after you less an average vet minimum) in 2019-20, but also still have two more years of $9M cap charges. That scenario still doesn't make much sense for them.
That's true as well. Was just noting that we can get by with Ryno as the 4 in the regular season, but clearly he can be severely limited/unplayable at times in the playoffs.
