Also on including Gordon, absolutely no need to do it till the deadline. We are in no rush at all, this roster will secure 2nd best record in the league.

We don't need Melo right now. They wish Melo was gone yesterday.

Ok, but here's why I don't get why a buyout can't be reached. Melo has two years left, and an opt out after this year. Unless he gets horrifically injured, the overwhelming odds are that in any situation he opts out next summer, tries to get one last long term big deal. Thus, Melo should be amenable to leaving year 2 on the table. At that point, Melo and Knicks are only haggling over one year's worth of salary. From the Knicks perspective, this means salary cap is only affected for one year, and its not like they were going to use the cap space for anything this year anyway. That has to be preferable than taking on 2-3 years of guaranteed money to guys they only feel lukewarm about. From Melo's perspective, he's probably looking at minimum deals because none of the best teams have any cap space to sign him to a higher number. So he should at least be willing to reduce this year's salary by his minimum amount, and a little more when factoring in taxes if he is looking at joining a state with no income taxes. Maybe he agrees to leave a few more million on the table as the cost of doing business. Seems like it would be worth it to both sides to settle at a number at like $20M for this season.

Yeah, exactly. I mean, supposedly they like Harkless from Portland. Harkless is no great shakes, but he's young, average and not too expensive. They're not looking for a haul, just not bad contracts.

Yeah, we'll have to agree to disagree that turning down bad offers equals "holding him hostage."

No player leaves before their 7th year. Restricted Free Agency essentially ensures that all great young prospects are with their team for 7-8 years. Otherwise, Westbrook wouldn't be on OKC, Davis wouldn't be in NO, Cousins wouldn't have been in SAC so long and Wall wouldn't be in Washington.

All year they told him they wanted him gone. Then they tell him he's going to Houston. He wants to go to Houston. Now they changed their mind and don't want to trade him. If that doesn't qualify as "holding some hostage" in the NBA idk what does.

I mean, you realize that the guy who was telling him they wanted him out all year is gone and there's a new GM and president there, right? A completely new set of people having a different opinion is not akin to "holding him hostage." If Phil Jackson were still in charge, the trade would probably already have happened.

You are right - I'm sorry - I meant "If they are going to trade him, they understand that they can't just get off the hook from taking back bad contracts"

Mills was calling the shots and he has final say at the end of the day. It makes sense for them to hold off on the trade since they just got a new GM. But they told Melo he was being traded to the Rockets. Melo wants to be traded to the Rockets. If they don't follow through with that, then that is precisely holding him hostage lol.

Idk why you're not acknowledging the fact that they literally told him he was being traded lol.

True. That would be worse case scenario for NY. And at that juncture, they would consider using stretch provision bc it's only straight lining 27million or so over 5 years, so it's a financial hamstring of only 5 million per year. They would assume that the cap will increase slightly, absorbing some of that hit.
