Very nice effort running the point last night. May be a good insurance guard if not shipped out with NG bros. See some Ish Smith in him, and Ish earns actual NBA money now.
I also thought he played really well. Most of his assists were the variety that led to wide open buckets, not just decent shots. He didn't really look for his shot, which was a big difference from his UT days (and he was a 20+ ppg scorer in the D-League this year). The big issue he's always had is an inconsistent jumper - he shot 45% in the D-League last year, which is probably what got him an NBA contract. I'd love to see us keep him as the 3rd string PG and let him play understudy to Chris Paul.
His speed with the ball is what I noticed immediately. Finishing and playmaking still needs work, but for a 3rd or 4th PG he would work. Still has time to improve those things. Can't teach speed and he has that. Will be interesting to see how he looks rest of summer league. He has a good chance to be in training camp. I like McCallum too. He seems like he could be a steady backup PG.
I've liked him since his UT days. We didn't see it last night but he's shown a great ability to finish around the basket* Since he has some insane speed with the ball, he could be a good player in the NBA if he developed something of a 3. That's why the time in RGV has been so good for him. *At UT he was a tremendous finisher at home games but was terrible on the road. I can't explain that; I just hope it was some statistical aberration.
The only problem I had with him last night was him letting Troy Williams handle the ball. He has to get that ball from him before he does something stupid....
I saw a couple instances where Troy took the ball when he should have let Isaiah get it (since Isaiah is too fast to be bothered by a full court press) so I'd put that on Troy more than Isaiah.
I always feel like a true point takes command of his team.... he's takes the ball from guys like Troy who can't be trusted with it outside their comfort spots.... you would probably never see a guy like Trez dribble coast to coast off a rebound cause Harden or CP3 would immediately take that ball from them.... But yea I know what your saying, a couple times he threw to Troy because the press and cut to get it back but Troy tried to foolishly dribble pass the press....smh
Tay played great. He ran the offense smoothly and got our players crisp passes for easy buckets. Runs the fast break well because of his speed. Made really good decisions with the ball. He didn't try to score in this game, just ran the offense great. Can he make the 3 consistently enough to stick? I sure hope so.
Taylor's ability to beat press, and the blinding speed with which he can dribble the ball down the court with control, is impressive.
