I hear ya... and the bird's rights mentioned by another is also something to factor in... I would just hope that moving Anderson could have been worked into the acquisition (by gaining the space to pay CP3 or by SnT...) ... reason being that if reports are to be believed and teams view RA's contract as a negative and want 2 firsts to take it on... cupboard is getting pretty bare... and that's approx 19-20M of space that's allocated... lol I'd much rather be looking to move Lou, Trez and Dekker at this point - rather than trying to offload RA without the benefit of our 1st or Bev to tie to it as an enticement... Fingers crossed DM finds a buyer... that hopefully doesn't cost us CC as well and leave another hole to fill... and I aint gonna lie... the thought of giving CP3 a 5 year rmax next offseason doesnt sound all that great... I mean we're talking about a 5 year deal that would run for him at 33, 34, 35, 36 and 37 years old... at 35-40M a year - on those backend years would be real dicey - imo...
Morey's deals always look like you gave up too much. Even the Harden trade seemed like a gamble at the point. We have to wait and see if it truly was a good deal. I'm not going to lie; right now it looks like a lot was given up. Especially since there is not guarantee Paul stays. I'm still cautiously optimistic though.
Sorry if this is a dumb question. We have CP3's bird rights night year right? So we can go over the cap like crazy?
CP3 is more proven than Harden was at that point. We weren't sure he was going to be able to hold his own away from his Thunder buddies. It was a risk. It worked out well. But it was a risk. If Paul plays well with Harden, leads to the WCF, and re-signs next year, no one will care about what he gave up.
Doc couldn't get CP3 one viable small forward in 6 years as a Clipper; he has two here in Houston in less than 48 hours.
Yup, but naturally the PnR passes for each will drop because they share duties and are on the same team. They look so good because each of those guys is carrying their team on his back.
Sign and trade had many advantages over just signing him we were able to keep all of our exceptions and unload the cap space for him all in one trade... those guys had to go anyway for us to have the space to sign CP3. Plus we got to go into FA with the advantage of already knowing you have CP3 as opposed to waiting a few days and falling behind on building the rest of the team and don't forget these things are not guaranteed. Think about Chris Bosh a few years back we cleared cap space to get him because he told us he was coming and changed his mind last second. Or Deandre Jordan with the Mavericks. All that and we have his bird rights so next year we could in theory go into the FA market with a ton of cap space sign another big time FA and then resign CP3 because we can go over the cap to retain him. I'm not even close to a Chris Paul fan mainly do to his flopping but this was a great way to add a top 10 player.
