Wow, MLB is royally screwed up with some outrageous salaries. So many of our guys are excessively overpaid while others are excessively underpaid. I think total salary should be more commensurate to performance regardless of experience. Based on my observations, here's my list of excessively overpaid/overrated and underpaid/underrated Astros. OVERPAID/OVERRATED Beltran ($16M) Gurriel ($14M) Reddick ($13M) McCann ($17M) Sipp ($6M) Morton ($7M) Gregerson ($6M) UNDERPAID/UNDERRATED Gonzo ($3.75M) Marisnick ($1.1M) *Devo *McCullers *Giles *Correa *making around the league minimum of $535K. Who would you add or remove from the list? http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/houston-astros/payroll/
Do you even follow baseball? This is like saying NBA players on their rookie scale contracts are overpaid, and veterans who have earned their 20m+ contracts are overpaid. Are you even a real coach?
No, I really don't follow MLB. Only the Astros. Does the NBA and NFL have farm teams for those who aren't ready for NBA or NFL? Which of our overpaid/overrated players earned their contracts?
Yes, it's called college. And I'm not understanding the point of this thread......young players have to prove that they can perform over a few seasons, while veterans have earned a payday because they HAVE performed over a few seasons. Every single industry on Earth operates under the same unwritten rules.....it's called life.
Actually, the NBA has a pay scale for lottery picks (no NBA experience), and NFL has a pay scale for draft picks (no NFL experience). I think the point I'm trying to make is some of our veterans and Gurriel are excessively overrated/overpaid, and we could've paid much less for equal or better talent.
How is McCann overrated? Why do you say McCullers and Devenski are underrated? Most players, managers, media and fans think very highly of those two. You don't even list the guy who is probably the most underpaid in the entire league, based on past and current performance.
MLB basically has set salaries for a player's first three seasons and arbitration based on tenure and performance for the next three years. So comparing the salaries of post arb players with arb and pre-arb players is always going to show older players as overpaid and younger players as underpaid by comparison.
You forget who you're speaking to. A few weeks of good performance means a guy is proven, and vice-versa. We should just look at everyone's April RISP numbers and change their pay accordingly.
Thanks for clarifying. I guess international players like Gurriel with no MLB experience are an exception. I'd rather have 3 Gonzos than an old, overrated Beltran. Lunhow needs to do a better job of gaming the system.
Yeah. Stupid Luhnow. Signing a guy who hit 29 home runs and had an .850 OPS. He should go back in time and undo that. #billgatesmoney #imakethingshappen #flipadmittedlydoesntfollowbaseballheknowsmorethanluhnowandhinch
$16M for a 40 year old DH-LF who hit 29 HRs? There's much better investment options than that! And Gurriel who finishes his swings with one hand, not 2 hands on bat with no experience against MLB pitching. Risky investments...
Oh...that hashtag refers to the only person I am aware of on this entire board who claims he will soon be making "Bill Gates" money.
