Ah... I almost forgot about Baseball America's July 2 review for the Astros' 2014 haul, where he was also mentioned. Ben Badler described Almonte as "a quick-twitch athlete with a good batting eye and contact skills." He also has a plus arm that can play at SS.
Out of curiosity. Do you pay for access to all of the major baseball sites e.g Baseball America, Baseball Prospectus, Perfect Game, ESPN Insider, etc....
In addition to Keegan Yuhl, Eric Peterson, and Michael Freeman, two more players were released. Both of them were with Buies Creek, neither of them were big names. C Christian Correa was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Nicholls State in 2015. It didn't take him too long to find work in indy ball; he was recently signed by the Kansas City T-Bones of the American Association. OF Johnny Sewald was the Astros' 14th-round pick out of Arizona State in 2015. Sewald stole 39 bases last year between both A stops. He showed an ability to get on base but that seemed to have eroded this year (3 BB, 27 K in 78 plate appearances)
Was surprised Seward didn't perform better in BC or get more playing time. He had a pretty good season last year. 18 players from the 2015 draft now remain in the system. 1 in MLB (Bergman), 1 in AAA (Thornton), 3 in AA, 9 in High A, 1 in A ball (Cameron), and 3 in extended spring training (assuming Weathersby and Marlow haven't been released). I would say it's on pace to be an above average draft (even considering the extra picks and pool manipulation), with 6-7 players reaching the majors and 2-3 becoming everyday regulars or stars.
That Cionel Perez performance is the stuff that legitimizes why the Astros invested so much in him and why so many fans are hyped about the guy's prospects. Anyone have the inside scoop on what happened? is the box score correct that he allowed no hits one walk and struck out 10 guys through 7IP...on only 78 Pitches?!
Alex Winkelman just got moved up to Corpus and he'll start the first game of a doubleheader against Springfield tomorrow. Also, Jon Singleton and Josh James were apparently suspended, and Dean Deetz was placed on the DL.
Well then. If it's for what you're thinking (and I'm thinking the exact same thing unless someone says otherwise), he's probably on the way out.
Sad to see him go but (like Tyler Heineman) its great news for him. He wasn't getting ML playing time with us. It seemed like he was fun, team-oriented guy who could and probably still can be a 5th outfielder on someone's club. I just remember him from this ASU video I saw when we drafted him. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QGPmpr0WV7g" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Jake Rogers has 2 homers in the first game of Buies Creek's doubleheader. He now has 8 between both A clubs this year. Franklin Perez went 2.1 innings and allowed 3 runs (1 inherited runner charged to him) on 3 hits and struck out 3 in his first appearance since coming off the DL.
Alex Winkelman's AA debut: 6 IP, 9 H (all singles), ER, 5 K Corpus leads Springfield 2-1 in the 7th inning of the first game of a doubleheader. Drew Ferguson has a solo homer, his 5th of the season.
Forrest Whitley is entering the game. He's taking over for Carlos Sanabria and is looking to preserve a 3-2 Quad Cities lead in the 5th.
Yohan Ramirez in game 2 of Corpus Christi's doubleheader: 4.2 IP, 3 H (solo HR allowed), ER, BB, 8 K He spent 2016 with both DSL teams. He joined the team at 21, so he's ancient by DSL standards. Ramirez made two appearances with Buies Creek after being summoned from extended spring training about a couple of weeks ago.
