You're an NBA GM building a roster. On your roster, you'd prefer to have:

  1. Clint Capela

  2. Jeff Withey

    Lul

Looks like he knows Hayward is gone so he's trying hard to find a new hero for his team

I think he just mixed up Jazz big men. It's the other one that is better than Capela.

Yeah, but still, you could have just pointed him to 2 links:
    http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/c/capelca01.html
    http://www.basketball-reference.com/players/w/witheje01.html

I think his beef is that Capela is basically 7 feet and catches lobs, and so that's supposed to make him "good". Well... yeah, that's what he does. Which is clearly infinitely better than Whitey.

That Whitey is better in one or a few random advanced stats is meaningless. Advanced stats are good to compare across comparable players, not across players in completely different roles and shouldn't otherwise be compared. Clint played 1,500+ minutes this year. Whitey under 450. You can't compare.

I'd be fired in a heartbeat if I copy/pasted a work IM chat, no matter what it's about.

That said I suppose I'd take Capela. He's proven more and I just haven't seen enough of Withey to support him over Clint.

Fortunately I removed all traces of our names and even time stamps. His name isn't actually "Jazz fan".

The irony is that this guy just bought me lunch today after losing another NBA bet that we had (that the Celtics could extend their ECF series longer than the Spurs could extend the WCF).

Jeff Withey is much better then Capela. Capela is a 3rd string center on the Nets at best. - Basketballhollic

I think Capela is a bit overrated here. Ppl forget that when Bigs are playing next to Harden, they automatically become 10x better. Look at what happened to Asik, Dmo when they left Harden.

"Withey" is literally an anagram for "Whitey." There is no player in the NBA with more deceptive athleticism than Jeff Withey.

Extrapolated over 36 conversations your friend is still a dope. Capela's rate of improvement has been amazing. There's no reason to believe he won't continue to improve given his work ethic. Instincts are important but his increase in size and strength will mitigate.

I wish the best thing about some of our young guys wasn't their "ceiling"....dude has a point, potential is hypothetical. Don't get me wrong, Capela is improving, but the "ceiling" discussion really is pointless. (unless you are a GM trying to swindle another GM)

I agree with you to an extent, and the guy who said Capela is overrated here.

If I'm GM right now I'm trying to put a defensive C in the starting lineup with Capela as my energy C off the bench.

Nevertheless.... Potential is real WHEN you can project a guy's growth based on real progress and skills gained over time. Capella has given us reason to believe that he hasn't hit a ceiling yet.

Jeff W.... Well we'll see what free agency tells us this summer. Maybe the Rockets sign him for backup C. Lolz.
