Awesome f***** job, Ken !!!! First clean inning of the season, and dominated Astros ballin !!! Morton worked some magic, Devo Devo'd, and we got some timely hits.
I couldn't disagree more with Kalas and Blum defending the boneheaded baserunning. Never ever make 1st or 3rd out at 3rd base!
I know managers can sometimes get excessive blame in losses, and not enough credit in wins... but I think people really need to look at the last 5 games closely and consider the job Hinch has been doing. No manager calls everything perfectly... but he's currently pulling all the right strings.
That is ridiculous. There is a success% to consider ever base running decision on. If you make that into a triple 85% of the time, it is most likely the right play. I'm not sure the break even, but clearly exists.
Some posters are being short-sighted since we were up 3 runs. Let that same mess happen in a closer game, and we'll all be sick. Altuve fantasies about a 75% success rate on similar plays.
Altuve is a good base stealer, but a bad base runner. In 2015 and 2016, his non-stealing base running cost the Astros 7 runs. He has far and away outpaced other players with negative base running plays the past two seasons. Here is an article describing his issues on the bases. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/the-most-bizarre-jose-altuve-stat/
The article fails to find the answer to, why doesn't Altuve have a higher rate of taking the extra base. Sure he can be overly aggressive and be thrown out too much, but why doesn't he take the extra base as often as Donaldson despite him clearly not lacking for trying.
People are actually complaining about altuve getting thrown out ? Either every one can be critiqued including managers or no one should be critiqued. Maybe the wind mill and probability were encouraging altuve to go.
