So many intriguing arms in the system. Deetz, F. Perez, whole QC rotation, etc. Just a ton of promise for those guys.

Chron story on Lupe Chavez's sudden retirement

Didn't really think the story was worth linking to because the reasoning behind his retirement is unknown and Mike Elias didn't elaborate any further... he simply said it was the "player's decision" to retire. But... here you go.

Early hitting returns on Jake Rogers look ugly so far. He's an almost 22y/o, three-year college guy who is currently hitting .174/.296/.217 in low-A ball.

Either call him up to be relatively soon to be the catcher equivalent of Marisnick or set the timer for 4 years and hope the bat jumps a level or two.

Just hit a ding dong. His gap power is going to turn into real power and he will be a top 15 prospect sooner rather than later.

    Yep --- it's the 4th inning, and he's 3 for 3, with 2 doubles, a home run, 3 runs, 7 RBI, and a steal. That's a ridiculous line.

    Rogelio Armenteros vs. Arkansas: 5 IP, 2 H, BB, 8 K

Corpus Christi leads 3-0 in the bottom of the 5th. Their 3 runs came on a Ramon Laureano homer.

Just think of all the whining there would be if MMP's HR line looked like that.

Studs and Duds after 10 games:

    AAA:
Studs: Reed, Fisher, Brignac, White, Teoscar, Kemp, Hoyt, Jankowski, Perez, Comer, West, Rodgers
Duds: Moran, Frias, Tolliver, Holmes, Yuhl

Good start for what was expected to be a stacked roster in Fresno. An injury in Houston would result in a tough decision on who to call up. Moran has only struck out 11% of the time, but he hasn't walked and isn't hitting for power. Martes isn't on the stud list due to his k/bb numbers. Comer's stock is pointing up. My money is on him, Jankowski, West, and Perez all getting at least a cup of coffee in the majors.

    AA:
Studs: All of the pitchers except Smith and Sneed
    Duds: Muniz, Ferguson, Hyde, Sneed

The Corpus lineup is off to a slow start. Singleton and Mayfield have produced but the underlying numbers aren't great. I expect Davis to take off shortly. Armenteros has been dominant. He, Deetz, and Dykxhoorn are 3 very high ceiling sleepers. Who's this Stutzman kid? Nice debut. A few other guys have high ERAs with great underlying numbers.

    High A:
Studs: Tucker, Hermelyn, Birk, Straw, Martin, J. Ferrell, R. Ferrell, Bostick, Quiala, N. Hernandez, Winkelman, F. Perez
Duds: Sewald, Duarte, Bower, E. Hernandez

What was expected to be a good team has lived up to the billing. I would no longer be comfortable including Tucker in a Quintana trade (although I'd be more than fine with including him in a trade for Archer). There a few sneaky prospects who nobody talks about but very well could end up as good everyday players or in the middle of a major league rotation. Birk, Bostick, and Quiala will be interesting to follow and hopefully get a good sample in AA this year.

    A:
Studs: Wrenn, Cameron, Benedetti, LaRue, Hartman, Whitley, Adcock, H. Perez
    Duds: Rogers, Britton

Last years college draftees are universally underrated and that's showing up so far this season. Wrenn is a guy I think could end up being a very good major leaguer and possibly even an all-star. There are some babip casualties on both sides (Dawson, Jones, Robinson, Adcock, Hunt). Encouraging strikeout rates by the pitching staff pretty much across the board.

Sean Stutzman was an undrafted free agent from Dallas Baptist who signed shortly after last year's draft. He had a rather non-descript debut with Tri-City.

Joe Joe every time I look at your moniker it reminds me being an Astros buddy and playing catch with him in the infield of the dome back in '70. Good memory!!

Still say the shooting star jersey is the best uni's they've ever had.

Mr. Tucker (the younger one) smacked another homer today.

Other than upping the walk rate, I don't see how KTuck could be doing better to start the season. He's hitting extremely well.

    Francis Martes @ Salt Lake: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 6 BB, 7 K

He left with a runner on for Tyson Perez, who got the final two outs of the 5th. Fresno leads 3-0 heading into the 6th.

That's 9 BB against 10 Ks in 9.1 innings. He's given up 7 hits, all singles.

It's not a pretty WHIP, but his ERA is still 0.00 and he's yet to give up an XBH.
