Woj: It'll be interesting with Daryl Morey...you can say Executive of the Year and give it to Bob Myers because they got Kevin Durant. You can make that case. But you look at Daryl Morey's body of work since last summer: hiring Mike D'Antoni, signing Eric Gordon & Ryan Anderson and now bringing in Lou Williams ... what he did moving off KJ McDaniels & Tyler Ennis - you've cleared $3M. They have more money to pay any potential buyouts. The turnaround of that organization & decisions - not just player personnel but pairing up James Harden with Mike D'Antoni ... pretty good Executive of the Year candidate right now. Bob Marks: Look where they were a year ago. You fired Kevin McHale in November. J.B. Bickerstaff did a great job holding that group together to get into the playoffs. We didn't know what direction. You could have been critical of the Eric Gordon & Ryan Anderson signing to a point where neither had shown they were healthy in New Orleans. Woj: That's what worried me. Yeah, two great shooters but Gordon had so many injuries over the years & managed to stay healthy. BM: There is a working relationship with the head coach. You often see the GM go out & makes a trade or drafts a player because he feels it's the right fit. He's not the coach now. If you're looking at Houston, it's almost like Mike gave Daryl a list of players that will fit my style. Go out and get them. Woj: Or James Harden gave them a list too. BM: Either or. That's where teams miss the boat. You go out and get a Solomon Hill who you think is a good wing but maybe doesn't fit Alvin Gentry.
Honestly, J.R., this really does deserve its own thread. titled something like "Woj and Bobby Marks of TheVertical discussing DM as EOY" Posters appreciate quotes like this being pulled out into discussions of their own...if not merely to bring to their attention vs getting lost. I'll do it if you don't want to.
My concern is that if Yao doesn't play himself when they show Yao's jersey retirement ceremony there gonna change his speech to be all Rocky IV: Yao: "During my career, I've seen a lot of changing, in the way you feel about me, and in the way I feel about you. Out here, there were five guys killing each other, but I guess that's better than twenty million. I guess what I'm trying to say, is that if I can change, and you can change, everybody can change!"
Define "very successful in the playoffs" more specifically so I can tell if you are being a realist or a turd.
The Rockets lack a center who's not afraid of a little contact...that can rebound, and pass the ball. Morey is Genius!
Just think it's silly to spend future assets for above average old player when you have such low chance to win a championship. Let's say Rockets have 35% to beat Spurs in bo7 without HCA, 20% to beat Warriors and 40% to beat Cavs - that means you beat those three teams 0.028% of the time so you should look just for big moves to improve those percentages and not make trades that slighty improve team but hurt future trading potencial.
We didn't hurt future trading potential. We got a positive trade asset in Lou Williams. If we want to move him in the offseason we can get picks for him instead of trading picks to dump him. If we are planning to go the cap route in the offseason, there is value in not having our 1st and being able to ship off Lou. That aside though, without doing quick math, I think our chances are much higher than 0.028%, even if they are low. You think we have less than 1 3tenths of a percentage point chance? Shoot I think even an 8th seed has better chances than that.
Hail Morey, full of face, Rocket fans are with thee, blessed art thou amongst Gm’s, and blessed is the fruit of thy trades in Houston. Holy Les, owner of Rockets, bring us a championship, now, next year and at the hour of our death. Amen.
