It's also good that he has that exposure to Urban Myer's style of coaching. He knows how big time programs should run and how to get kids to be accountable and perform to the best of their abilities.

I'm not crazy that he also served under Shawn Watson at Nebraska but hopefully that was all washed away during his time at Ohio St. Here is a pretty good article chronicling his path in performance and style:

    http://buckeyextra.dispatch.com/content/stories/2016/04/14/tim-beck-settles-in-after-tough-2015.html

It's not super great that Texas averaged more total and passing yards per game than Ohio St but the big 12 is a different conference with different defenses. At the end of the day, he is the play caller at the 3rd ranked team in the country who has a good shot at getting to the championship game.

Like you said, it's not really meaningful to compare unadjusted stats. Looking at adjusted stats, tOSU is top 10 by nearly every metric, while Texas is nowhere to be found.

Another commitment today. OL Derek Kerstetter flipped from Oklahoma State. He's a U.S. Army All-American.

Lagaryonn Carson decommitted today. Doesn't sound like he was going to qualify anyways, but he was UT's highest ranked recruit.

Hmmm, may have been wrong about this. From Orangebloods but have read both so who knows...

    - Here is an interesting quote from a source closely affiliated to Ohio State’s football program: “Ohio State had to change to structure of its offensive play-calling because most of Beck’s first year, he was in the booth and Ed Warinner, who actually had the title of offensive coordinator, but was a play-caller with Urban (Meyer). They were on the field and Beck was upstairs. After their debacle against Michigan State, the very next game, Ed moved upstairs, and they had a GA work with the offensive line. After that season, they ended up shuffling the staff around and ended up giving Ed the tight ends role, ended up bringing in a new o-line coach, and moved Ed upstairs. There was displeasure with the eye in the sky.”

    - Warinner is the play-caller at Ohio State. I was told the two best called offensive games this season were against Nebraska and Oklahoma.

It seemed that he was also suspended from his high school team so it just seems like it wasn't a good fit all around. 247 is reporting it was a "mutual" thing and they don't usually say that when it's a straight de-commit.

    A note from 247:
Texas should know if they are going to get JUCO DB Kendall Sheffield soon since he wants to enroll in the spring.

LB Marqez Bimage is another recent UH decommit that will likely commit to Texas.

TE Reese Leitao decommited from Nebraska after visiting Texas. That looks good for UT.

TE Reese Leitao commits to Texas. That's the second TE commit since Herman was hired. But @DonnyMost says he doesn't use TEs.

Donny is an idiot. In 2008, when Herman was the OC at Rice, James Casey led the NCAA in receptions...playing TE.

It's good to see there will be a level of competition there. You can see all the current commits here: http://texas.247sports.com/Season/2017-Football/Commits

Texas could get a couple of 4 star uncommitted recruits:
    RB http://247sports.com/Player/Eno-Benjamin-58645
    CB http://247sports.com/Player/Chevin-Calloway-78898
    OT http://247sports.com/Player/Chuck-Filiaga-75977
    DE http://247sports.com/Player/KLavon-Chaisson-83858

Any other 4s or 5s would need to be flips which is certainly possible. Kids shift schools like crazy.

Don't think Eno is in play after Young committed. Also think Filiaga released his top schools and don't believe Texas was on there. Chaisson would be a big pickup for Orlando and the defense.

Good point and find. OL is also very crowded. You have 1 commit this year the 2 Baylor OL who red shirted and are technically freshman and 4 OL who will be sophomores.

You would think we have depth at CB but they just didn't play well. Depth will help but they need real coaches and it sounds like Herman will play them in the spring at the same level of physicalness as the games.

DE seems very weak but I'm guessing some of those DTs from last year can move to the edge. I don't know enough about the UH defense and how they positioned traditional DEs in formations between being on the line vs an outside linebacker.

Again, it's so early to make conclusions. Charlie barley recruited before the dead period and flipped a lot of guys. His strategy seemed to be flooding visits with lots of guys to build chemistry with a group of kids and I doubt Herman can get that many visits this offseason. He's also riding a lot of hard feelings in Houston but that will fade and kids will come if the team wins.

I hope UT can return to national prominence and move past OU for the first time in decades to save Football in the state in terms of keeping the best high school players in Texas.

There are other factors though that might make That impossible due to recent developments.

    1) A&M opened the state to the SEC so players don't disappear from the Texas public if they go to SEC schools. You have kids going to LSU, Alabama, Auburn and the Mississippi schools.
    2) TV exposure has made it so you don't have to go to a big school that traditional attracted TV like Texas and Notre Dame. That's especially true for the SEC where you have ABC that seems to air the most college games on their over the air, main network than any other program. No one is super excited to play on Fox Sports. Still most cable subscribers automatically get ESPN 2 and Fox Sports which is all you need.
    3) Alabama has changed the image of the SEC so it seems like the best conference in football which it might be but it's really just a few teams every year like Alabama that win. They use that success to keep those top recruits. Having said that, those top teams win championships.

Here are state of Texas commits ranked via 247 composite:
    1) Uncommited with quotes not favoring any Texas Team
    2) Uncommitted with no visits to Texas Schools.
    3) Ohio St
    4) Stanford
    5) LSU
    6) Ohio St
    7) Texas Tech
    8) Not likely to be eligible for Divison 1 play
    9) Notre Dame
    10) Texas A&M

Is this a pipe dream? Probably. Do you have to get those 5 star recruits? It's doesn't guarantee success but It typically gives a good chance to create talented college athletes but it's not necessary.

    ....off-season dribble

I don't think this is fair - it's certainly true recently with Alabama has had it's share of titltes and has carried the conference recently, but the SEC really developed that reputation before these last few years. From 2006 to 2012, they won 7 straight national titles, spread between 4 different schools - and the first 3 titles were not Alabama. I think a legit argument can be made that some of those schools benefited by their reputation in terms of getting the opportunity, but it's not like it was just Alabama and a bunch of mediocrity. There's no other conference anywhere with that widespread success and the conference as a whole earned the reputation, I think.

A terrible showing from all aspects. The OL got absolutely dominated, Barrett hesitated and held on to the ball too long, big drops by the WR, fumbles, etc...

Think it was a foregone conclusion that there'd major shakeups by Urban and if he was really interviewing Kevin Wilson during the season, have to wonder what effect that had, if any.

Latest rumblings on the coaching staff:

    - Chip Brown reporting that Brewster is off the table.

    - John Fox is expected to return next season. Question now is whether he keeps Stan Drayton and rest of the offensive staff.

    - Beck didn't sound confident that he'll be back at OSU next season quoting that it's up to Urban.
