Regarding US conflict with the PRC. The US will destroy the PRC in a naval battle. For all of the modernization of the PRC military they are still aren't close to what the US can do regarding projection of power. That said any conflict between the US and the PRC most likely isn't primarily going to be through the military but through economic and probably cyber moves. The problem with those is that both countries have the ability to retaliate. Our economies are very interconnected and it's not like we can just cut off dealing with the PRC without some severe consequences.
On the main topic I have no doubt that recent moves such as this are meant to send a message to the US and the incoming Trump Admin. regarding the One China policy and also threats of a trade war. Further the PRC position has been recently strenghened by the Philippines dropping its dispute over the Scarborough Shoal. I will agree though that the Obama Admin. isn't blameless and the Asian pivot hasn't been handled well. That said I highly doubt that th next Admin. will do a better job and based on the rhetoric coming out of Trump will make things worse. In fact the PRC global position has already been strengthened as they've capitalized on the potential of the US becoming more isolationists and anti-trade by increasing their influence with Latin America during the recent APEC conference.
No but I also believe that our current president has way more power than the guy who's next at this time.

I mean, that's how it should be, but given how little respect anyone has for Obama around the world, it's actually possible that Trump has more power than Obama already even before he's in office. I'm worried that Trump is going to be an awful president, but at least he's not a little b**** like the guy that is in there now. Everyone knows they can get away with whatever they hell they want right now because they know Obama won't do anything about it. Hopefully that changes.

I think Obama really ****ed up by pushing SK and Japan to settle the entire comfort woman thing. Pushes SK closer to china. prc has been walking all over obama for the last 8 years and the next admin was either going to toughen up or concede. They built the artificial islands earlier but the most recent militarily buildup has coincided with Trump's recent rhetoric. The seizure of the underwater drone timing certainly does follow Trump's rhetoric. Anyway the PRC themselves following Trump's statements have made threatening statements. Immediately after the election they were initially complementary to Trump. So you have Trump making statements that the PRC find threatening, the Chinese making threatening comments in response and following that taking hostile actions towards the US. It's pretty clear that Trump's rhetoric is at the minimum exacerbating things.
