The new CBA goes into effect NEXT offseason (there was definitely some confusion while I was watching MLB Network last night, and they thought the same thing at first, that the new CBA was great for guys like Fowler. But they later corrected themselves as newer information was made available), so teams will lose their 1st round draft pick (if not protected) for signing any FA attached with a QO.
What is amazing is that with a salary cap going to 210 million near the end of this deal, that leaves 20 guys making 10 million each and 10 million for 5 other guys pre albitration eligible, which most teams have. My point is there is going to be lots of money for Correa, Altuve, Keutchel, Springer, Bregman, etc.... But back to the topic, 2 years 25-30 million might be worth a gamble for Beltran. He'd play LF and DH, and spot duty in Right Field. An outfield of Springer, Beltrán, and Reddick with Marisnick & Aoki is a good combo of defense, offense, and speed with righty/lefty and switch hitting options. I was just as much Astro Butt hurt like a lot of you, but MLB is a billion dollar industry where fan feelings aren't too relevant other than for goodwill building. Gurriel plays 1st base. Reed gets to make his adjustments and if he overtakes Gurriel at 1st base, you have Gurriel who takes over as super sub infielder extraordinaire. And you have two all around infield super subs in Gurriel and Marwin. I like Encarnación, but Beltran could be just the type of bridge guy we need before K Tucker arrives in the ML's.
A 40 year old Beltran playing our left field wall. That'd be hilarious to watch. Not a fan of paying the guy 15 million a season either. Ain't my money though.
Berkman, Beltran, Biggio stuffed into a toy VW is exactly the kind of clown parade you're imagining in the OF.
Ahh yes.... I just loved watching a has been Biggio stubbornly calling off stronger armed outfielders and then watching baserunners tag effortlessly to the next base.
While I was hoping for Beltran last year, and really wanted Encarcion this year, I am always happy to get more talent, especially hitting talent.
Don't forget the look of defeat on the pitchers face as he watches a lazy fly ball turn into a sacrifice...
