Seriously, are we totally focused on out scoring every opponent? Will the guru defensive coach make a team full of offensive players a good to average defensive team? What happens to those who can't shoot str8 (Beverely and Brewer, etc..)? Last but not least can this coaching staff get us back to an NBA finals or are we just waiting until GSW implodes. GSW is looking like a 3 to 4 year contender right now.

The strategy is to have more points than the other team. Usually that means you win also if the other team scores less than you it's usually a win also....but really I'm not a 100% sure that's accurate.

Just have fun, they are not going to win games in playoffs anyway with this coach. They may miss the playoffs.

I do agree with other posters, if you play O, you score more than our opponents
If you play D, our opponent score less. The secret of this game is revealed by now

D'Antoni's teams usually play at a fast pace which means his team's games are high scoring. If you adjust the defensive statistics for pace, you'll find that D'Antoni's teams have generally finished middle of the pack in defense.

I understand that the popular perception is that D'Antoni's teams are terrible defensively but in reality they're not. They're certainly not elite, but they also aren't terrible. The addition of Bzdelik also has to help on the defensive side of the ball.

To answer your question, I'd guess that we'll be elite offensively and average on defense.

I'm with you. Most regular season nights, teams will struggle to score as many points as we pressure them to put up, but in the playoffs I worry more. That being said, the MDA Suns should have gone to the Finals at least once. So, I think we could make noise in the playoffs, I'm just not sure MDA is a champion even though he was probably the best candidate at the time.

Regarding the original question, I believe our playoff success has 100% to do with our level of perfection. I think the system will work offensively, so if these guys start getting the mistakes to a minimum, we'll do well. Defensively, I think we'll learn how well communication between coaches goes during the season. If Bzdelik and MDA communicate well and get adjustments into the players, that will be fine. Again the key is how well those two work together. And to me that's mostly on MDA to learn Bzdelik's style, language, etc.

Our real issue is being more perfect on both sides than a team that gets hot like the Cavs did. Adjusting for a well trained defense and knowing all the options inside and out is what will make it all tick. That's why Hakeem was so good, he had multiple counters for every adjustment the defender made and it was all part muscle memory. If we can learn to probe using all of MDA's little tricks and the team has everything memorized so it can adjust on the fly the same way Hakeem did, we might have something fun to watch.

Let's hope Harden loves the MDA style and learns every scenario well enough to maestro defenses.

Rarely works against a team that has the best scorers and shooters

KD, Thomps and Curry top what Harden does by himself

Play with the heart of a champion. Simple.

    As head coach:
    DENVER
    1998-99 - DRtg 110.4 (29th of 29)
    PHOENIX
    2003-04 - DRtg 105.5 (24th of 29)
    2004-05 - DRtg 107.1 (17th of 30)
    2005-06 - DRtg 105.8 (16th of 30)
    2006-07 - DRtg 106.4 (13th of 30)
    2007-08 - DRtg 108.1 (16th of 30)
    NEW YORK
    2008-09 - DRtg 110.8 (23rd of 30)
    2009-10 - DRtg 111.6 (27th of 30)
    2010-11 - DRtg 110.1 (22nd of 30)
    2011-12 - DRtg 101.0 (5th of 30) - split the season with Mike Woodson
    LOS ANGELES
    2012-13 - DRtg 106.6 (20th of 30)
    2013-14 - DRtg 110.6 (28th of 30)

    As assistant:
    DENVER
    1997-98 - DRtg 112.1 (29th of 29)
    PHOENIX
    2002-03 - DRtg 102.5 (11th of 29)
    PHILADELPHIA
    2015-16 - DRtg 109.2 (26th of 30)

So, he had a four year run where he had an average or so defensive team in Phoenix, one year with a strong defense in New York (though Woodson coached 40% of the season), and the rest of the time he has been 20th or worse (7 of 12 season, or the majority of his career). We won't blame him for the poor defense when he was only an assistant, because he was probably the offensive assistant, but that also means he doesn't get credit for the 11th ranked defense in 2002-03.

I think saying his teams have generally finished middle of the pack in defense is being overly generous. His defenses have ranged from mediocre to terrible, and were more often bad than average.

    But Moniker...

I think MDA's assistant during each of those years might be important. Let me do some digging. The good research you did makes me question why there were such big swings.

Pathetic attempt by Les to rebuild the Suns.

    He got his "real" coach.

We're about to see how bad a meddling owner can be

Here's an article that breaks down his defenses year by year.

Anyway, it's probably worth looking at. Not sure what to make of it myself.
