Our past three permanent head coaches have each lasted four seasons with the Rockets (McHale got a few games into a fifth season). With coaches in the news and the last disastrous season under JBB to think about it, how do you rank the four seasons and change of Jeff Van Gundy, Rick Adelman, and Kevin McHale? The three men have relatively similar win-loss records, which leaves a lot of discussion left to have about how much they achieved given the player resources they had to work with. Jeff Van Gundy Record: 182-146 (.555.) Playoff Appearances: 3/4 Playoff Record: 7-12 (.368) Playoff Series Wins: 0 Key players: Yao Ming - 4 seasons, 38.1 Winshares Tracy McGrady - 3 seasons, 24.6 Winshares Dikembe Mutombo - 3 seasons, 13.0 Winshares Juwan Howard - 3 seasons, 11.7 Winshares Rafer Alston - 2 seasons, 10.0 winshares Luther Head - 2 seasons, 9.1 winshares Shane Battier - 1 season, 9.0 winshares ________________________________________________________________ Rick Adelman Record: 193-135 (.588.) Playoff Appearances: 2/4 Playoff Record: 9-10 (.474) Playoff Series Wins: 1 Key players: Luis Scola - 4 seasons, 26.9 Winshares Shane Battier - 4 seasons, 21.7 Winshares Yao Ming - 4 seasons, 19.2 Winshares Chuck Hayes - 4 seasons, 16.0 Winshares Carl Landry - 3 seasons, 15.1 winshares Kyle Lowry - 3 seasons, 13.1 winshares Kevin Martin - 2 seasons, 11.8 winshares (McGrady off list due to injury) ________________________________________________________________ Kevin McHale Record: 193-130 (.598.) Who's #1? And which one was the worst?
What's the criteria? X's and O's or are we going by results? Because as Nimo pointed out, only one of those coaches took us to the WC Finals. That said, this is also a bit skewed, IMO, since JVG never had the benefit of working with Daryl Morey.
So the Rick/JVG/McHale order is what I expected to be in the lead, but I am a bit surprised that it's leading a JVG-first choice by such a wide margin. There was a ton of JVG nostalgia going around lately. ^The criteria is, who do you think is the best Rockets coach. You can define that as you wish.
1- jb 2 - rick 3 - jvg 4- mchale ricks offense > jvg's defense. i dont mind either. give rick defensive players worth a daam he too can coach a good defensive team. same with jvg with offense.
I voted for the guy who got us the farthest in the playoffs. Plus look at those scrubs... Jones, Asik, Bev, Portions. Not a damn Battier, Scolandry, or Mutombo in sight!
