It's actually true. He was a beast his early years. But the system he's in has allowed him to not be as productive in his latter years, and his team doesn't miss a beat. LMA will eventually replace him and the Spurs will STILL be a contender. Imagine if KG & Duncan swapped places, KG would be considered the GOAT PF & would have multiple rings with the Spurs. Was Duncan's skillset that much better the rest of the HOF PF's? I don't think so. How many signature performances to we remember from Duncan?

QUOTE=napalm_black;10491022]Duncan is a founder, president, and CEO of the Spurs system.

    He was a system administrator.[/QUOTE]
The system works perfectly fine without in it. The Spurs will be just as good when he retires

only if you consider defense. and winning. and production. and longevity.

although evaluating just how good duncan is can be tough given he's always had pop and the spurs front office. we can talk about duncan making it all work as much as we want, because it's mostly true, but it's pretty obvious pop knows what he's doing when it comes to the supporting cast and putting in disciplined and efficient offensive and defensive schemes. duncan has been allowed to not be a #1 dominant scoring option for almost 10 years and still has the 2007 championship, the 2014 championship, and an additional finals appearance to show for it.

I think this was the right person, right time and right location. Certainly a lot of credit goes to Popovich and the Spurs organization for putting the pieces around him to work but at the same time I don't think they see the success without Tim Duncan's personality and leadership.

Duncan also got lucky in coming in right away and getting another class act big man in David Robinson to mentor him. As a Rockets' fan I can only dream about what it would've been like if he had been drafted by the Rockets and had Hakeem and Rudy T mentor him.

I don't know about that. Duncan's biggest win was against the Miami heat when Leonard arrived on the scene and Parker and Genobli still had game, but he lost often to the good teams - including those LA Powerhouse teams.

Kobe took a team of Gasol, Bynum, Fischer, and Odom to beat the Celtics who had the big 3. I mean, Duncan was the best big man of the post-Hakeem era but putting him higher than Kobe is definitely debatable.

Kobe + prime Gasol, Bynum, and Odom is a pretty sick team. It's not like it was Kobe + a bunch of scrubs.

I'd be shocked if he came back. He's got nothing left in the tank.

A great career. A great pro.

Dude does not have a Twitter account and never cared to be in the spotlight. Wonderful

Meh, I'm so glad he, Manu, and Tony might be done. Great players, don't get me wrong, but I'm happy if this is their last run.

    Agreed.

And one can probably argue that Kobe needed those 3 as much as those 3 needed Kobe.

Not to mention how he was clamoring for a trade because he couldn't carry his team into the playoffs before landing Gasol, and how that trade was basically Kwame+prospects for a prime Gasol.

Not sure why it's debatable. He hasn't been the best player on his own team yet he's the GOAT pf? He's a great player w/ the luxury of being in the same winning system his whole career. He's is not the best PF ever? I'd put Karl Malone over TD

Flawed logic. LaMarcus has been an all star before he got to San Antonio free of the Spurs system. He would be great had he stayed in Portland or had he gone to the rockets. So of course the Spurs are still going to contend with lma. He's a good player.

So since Timmy is so system, then if the Spurs drafted Keith Van Horn instead they would have definitely got the same results and keith would have had a 19 year career?

Timmy was the best player on his team for 4 championships and atleast the first 10 years of his career. 2 mvps. Who cares if he didn't have to average 25-12 in year 15 so he can drag his team to 42 wins just to prove he could do it alone.

i wonder if the current GS team faced any legendary big man like Tim or Hakeen in their prime, how bad those Draymond green clowns would be schooled and destroyed, really sad to see such a good player could perform anymore because of his age

Duncan was consistently good but I agree Karl Malone and even Barkley had much higher peaks in their careers and we're just more taleneted and athletically gifted. With that said F(?k Karl Malone
