Wait until we run a few jet sweeps and fly sweeps. These lousy draft picks will be the talk of the NFL in 2016. We have 4 speed demons that can run some version of these sweeps or use the threat of them to open up the outside. This offense is going to kick butt. The draft plan worked perfectly and we now will have an offense that will be very difficult to defend against.
Rotoworld's Evan Silva gave the Texans' draft a C+ grade. "I think [GM Rick] Smith made good picks here, but I can also envision scenarios where this draft looks rough in a couple of years," Silva wrote. The analyst was particularly puzzled by the Texans' decision to take "low-volume deep threat" Notre Dame WR Will Fuller in the first round over the "more-talented" Josh Doctson. In addition, Silva points out that Rd. 2 center Nick Martin tested poorly, third-round WR Braxton Miller is a project, fifth-round S K.J. Dillon is "a straight-linish box safety", and fourth-round RB Tyler Ervin "could max out as a scatback/return specialist."
Every player in the draft could bust. Did he give all teams C+? Grading drafts is just dumb, but some of these guys take the stupidity to a higher art form.
Some are more likely to be busts than others. It is not a guarantee but you go based off what you see and know so far. You can't predict how well a draft class will be down the road, but you can grade based what you know of their past play/talent/skill. Personally, I think the only player that could really be a bust is Martin. He is the one draftee that we are expecting much out of immediately. I won't be surprised if none of the other draftees aren't starting week 1. Fuller could outplay Miller or vice versa and Strong could outplay Fuller for WR2. And there's still Cecil Shorts.
We really don't need to rush Martin into the Wolves den. We have acquired Bergstrom who was very solid Center for the Raiders last season. We also acquired Allen to hold down the Guard position. So we don't have rush him along.
I don't think the team has a lot of faith in Bergstrom at center, I don't either, or they won't have drafted Martin in the 2nd. Bergstrom hasn't played center long enough to really qualify a solid center. I would be surprised if he can't beat out Bergstrom or Sua Filo at some point during the season.
The Fuller pick was horrible (Fuller has the worst hands of any 1st round receiver I can recall) and the bizarre Martin trade-up cost the Texans a TE/QB in the 6th.
I didn't like Fuller at 22, If you just wanted speed to tie up one safety you could have taken Kolby Listenbee much later. I do not think we will ever see 1st round impact from him. I don't think he will be an every play WR like Doctson or Treadwell probably will be. With Miller and Irvin he probably won't be the KR either. At 22 you could have taken a chance on Nkemdiche, it's not so high that a bust would kill you but might have made the DL the 85 Bears quality if he does pan out. I think we missed on filling holes and adding depth and got some redundant talent. I gave it a B on potential excitement but not an A for non-practicality. I didn't know a thing about Tyler Ervin, but I am blown away by his highlights. Could be Sproles or Spiller for us. Dillon is just another guy if he's not the "cover the TE" guy we needed. I guess with Reader, Covington and Still can focus on DE.
I don't think that's the case at all. Haven't we all been complaining about depth for the offensive line? Well that's probably what they were thinking when they drafted Martin. Not only that Coach said he's versatile, he can play both Center and Guard. And your are right Bergstrom was a backup who stepped in when the Raiders starting Center went down wth an injury. But since Bergstrom did such a remarkable job once the starter was ready to go the coach didn't see any need to bench Bergstrom.
Hindsight is 20/20 but they could have gone: 1st round: Trade down, draft Vernon Butler 2nd round: Same - Martin 3rd round: Same - Miller 4th round: Nick Vannett Ervin (from 1st round trade) 5th round: Same - Dillon and Reader 6th round: Kolby Listenbee Now that is an A+ draft. Like I said, hindsight is 20/20
A teams will never think of what they need like that of a fan. We as fans always think we know exactly what our team needs. But guess what , they get paid the big bucks for a reason. They actually put in the work to evaluate what they think is the biggest need for their teams. Speed was top priority and after carefully studying each receiver, Fuller was their guy. And you can best believe this youngster can be a every down receiver. Shoots it's a good chance he will be our number 2 receiver this season.
I don't think they use a 2nd round pick (especially one they traded up for) for depth. I think they're hoping he's a starter this season. As bad as Sua Filo has been, he was drafted in the 2nd round and was drafted to start. It took him longer and the coach expressed disappointment in him but he they absolutely were hoping he is their starter. You said Bergstrom did such a remarkable job once the starter was ready to go, the coach didn't see any need to bench him. How come when the season ended, they weren't trying to retain him? Obviously if Bergstrom outplays Martin, Bergstrom is starting. I think O'Brien already said Martin has to work his way up from 3rd string. But he is absolutely expecting and hoping he works his way up into a starting position.
To be precise, you would need 20/20 foresight five years into the future and *then* you could have 20/20 hindsight into who the Texans should have drafted. We are talking some very special super hero skills here
Fuller I think will always be graded poorly by some. Fuller's impact will be that other teams will be forced into keeping two safeties deep, which will reduce the number of defenders in the box and allow the running more yards per carry and which will reduce the double teams on Hopkins and give him more YAC. Both of these impacts will not show up on Fuller's stat sheets. What Fuller can add that other speedsters can not as well is more catches and thus more YAC and hopefully more TDs.
The same reason why we didn't retain Ben Jones. And of course you don't want draft a player that high to sit on the bench. But we finally have depth so we don't have to throw him to the Wolves either. One thing I can say is its good to finally have depth on the offensive line.
Yeah...Texans org! I cant believe you traded up for a need and eliminated our ability to draft a scrub. Unlike Destiny's Child, we need scrubs to fill a Houston sports quota. Idiots.
