Yea. Duane Akina was the coach behind DB-U and had Stanford as the top Pac 12 passing defense last year and 7th in the nation. They aren't doing as well this year but are certainly better than Texas. He also put 5 or 6 DBs in the first couple rounds of the NFL draft including Early Thomas while at Texas.
It's also worth noting that the Florida 5 turned into Florida 1. Two of the guys couldn't get admission to school because of his test scores. Another guy just didn't like the team atmosphere. All that work for such a little return.
I thought Ford and Burt were both part of that, though? But yeah, that was disappointing (especially Cherry, nothing you can do about non-qualifiers). I'm all for recruiting nationwide but the focus should really be on the top in-state/regional guys. I guess Austin being Mecca for transplant hipster jackholes from around the country hasn't really carried over into football recruiting.
His HC career - and the reason he was hired - was about outcoaching people with lesser talent at Louisville. Akina also couldn't follow orders and was at the heart of the Manny Diaz debacle. He was part of the cultural dumpster fire that Mack left behind and had to go, no matter how good he theoretically might be.
Debatable. Bridgewater was an above average college QB, which makes a big difference. Surely UT-Austin branch fans can understand this, given the past several years... FYI Strong was 7-6 his first two years at Louisville.
When an unranked team goes on the road against the #4 team in the country, I'm guessing it's not often competitive. So maybe you're right.
You don't watch a lot of college football. Tech almost beat them the week before, and they were unranked.
In case you're still stuck in 2004, you might want to check Ohio State's results this year. While they've been #1 for most of the year, two unranked teams got within a touchdown of them (powerhouses N. Illinois and Indiana), and Ohio State had no significant injuries (unlike TCU). Furthermore, aside from SF Austin, Texas was by far the biggest blowout for TCU. They gave up 37 points to SMU and 52 points to Tech. They only beat an unranked Minnesota by a touchdown. Like I said, this isn't 2004, where top ranked teams roll 50-7 every week - oh wait, I guess it actually is when the Longhorns play. Ready to STFU yet?
For those of you ignorant of TCU's injuries, you might want to check out these links: http://www.burntorangenation.com/2015/10/1/9431877/tcu-horned-frogs-injury-report-texas-longhorns http://texas.forums.rivals.com/thre...ntire-defense-of-freshmen-and-walk-ons.87425/ We didn't get whipped by #4 team at full strength.
Complacency and privilege. It's awesome when your DC calls a play and the secondary is looking over to another coach on the sideline to tell them what to do regardless of the scheme being played.
All his success was with Teddy Bridgewater who was an NFL starter as a rookie. Hindsight says he had plenty of talent at Louisville especially with the weak overall talent of the conferece. The Manny Diaz debacle was all Manny Diaz. The defense was fine after Robinson took over.
Lance on 790 said he heard things over the weekend from a few very high up donors and from an NFL guy who knows the rumors around the league- The donor(s) said Strong may not make it through this year. After being down 35-0 or whatever it was in the 1st they were pretty pissed and tired of the same 'ol ****. They have seen no improvements in coaching or players and the tweet really relayed their anger. Charlie just doesn't have this team. He's in over his head. The NFL dude relayed that Chip Kelly and Philly are already ready to part ways. Not an "if but more "when". Chip would want a high profile college gig and you saw how well he recruited Texas while with Oregon. Just sayin'. Or at least Lance Z was.
If they get into December and Philly is out of the playoff race, I'd put money that Kelly is wearing Burnt Orange on Jan 5th. He'd be a perfect fit at UT. With the dominance of spread offenses in high schools across the state and his already known ability to recruit here, it would be a match made in heaven.
Neither Bridgewater, nor all their top tier draft picks, were highly recruited. So was it great talent, or was it talent that he coached up and developed? It's the same as the TCU question - do they find lots of hidden gems that would have been stars anywhere, or do they know how to take raw skills and mold them into great football players? No - Akina was teaching his own schemes instead of what the DC was building the defense around. Robinson worked OK because he changed the scheme to fit what Akina was doing, but that's total garbage - see Buck's post above. If your defense is aligned one way, and you're the secondary coach, you coach it that way, no matter what your preferences are. Diaz may have sucked independently from that, but its impossible to succeed when your other coaches are undermining you. Chip Kelly would be a brilliant hire - I've wanted him at Texas for about 5 years now since the whole "Time for Mack to go" stuff first started.
bridgewater graded out higher bortles, manziel, and carr as a prospect he fell in the draft due to a bad proday Bridgewater was a beast in college
Id say if we can get someone of chip Kelly's caliber then fire Strong, but if not there is no use letting him go.
