I'm not. A lot of youth coaches take these games way too seriously.

NO, its not okay. You don't fight ignorance with violence - that only affirms the ignorant persons beliefs.

You fight ignorance with education - otherwise they will always be ignorant.

If the ref did indeed use racist language (and we don't know that for certain) he should be kicked out of TASO and never be allowed to ref again.

Right now, these kids are WORSE OFF than before. They made the situation worse themselves because they followed the coach's instructions.

The coach should be fired and never allowed to coach again. He's just as bad, if not worse than the ref because he condoned physical violence.

The kids definitely need to face punishment. If they had done it without the coach's orders, then I'd kick them off the team forever. However, since they were following the coaches orders, I'd Suspend them for the season and they can play next year (only because the coach told them to do this).

The kids screwed up because they got caught. Should have been more discreet and wait for a play near the ref. It was too obvious what they did.

Also racists don't change (especially adults) so a good ass whopping is in order so they at least think twice and keep it to themselves going forward.

Or you further affirm their beliefs that your race is less evolved and inferior having to resort to primitive violence instead of engaging in dialogue to break their misconceptions about race.

I remember in about fifth grade our football coach telling one of our linebackers to load up and hit the other team's center before the ball was hiked to put some fear in him. That guy was a real scumbag.

As a minority, you have to learn to deal with racism in a way that is productive to you and society as a whole because you will see it your entire life. There can be retribution but it must come in a much more crafty manner.

For one, you have to realize the modern racist will display their ignorance to you in a no-win situation. The options are usually to either suck it up and move on or do something that will hurt you more than them at some point.

He pulled his helmet off and hit him in the head with it.

It's impossible to know if it was 'heat of the moment' (not like that is much of an excuse), but regardless, that could have ended much worse than it did for the ref.

I was in a basketball game once where the referee was killing my team. I was frustrated. What I did was instinct. The call was a turnover. The ball rolled to me near the foul line. The ref went to the baseline to hand the ball to the other team. I started walking to my own end with the ball. With the referee behind me on the baseline I threw the ball over my shoulder ( I mean I ripped it ) with the intent of hitting the referee. I didn't see what happened. But when I heard "oh my god" I turned around to see the referee, his bloinde hair, and his broken glasses on the ground. He was in the fetal position bleeding. I felt bad. I didn't know he wasn't looking. And I had no idea I could do that much damage. Kept walking, and pretended like it wasn't intentional. And nobody after the incident thought it was intentional. Everyone thought it was an accident, that I was just sending him the ball, not a message. The game just went on. But I know what I did. It was a sort of an emotional crime, with some pre-meditated action, but I don't think I thought it would end the way it did.

Oddly, when I see these events happen, like coaches dangling from players on the court in a brawl, little leaguers playing over their age and getting caught, and now referees getting hit. I've been involved in all of these situations and I thought of myself as a good person never looking for trouble. So I don't think I'm alone. In a weird sort of way, these events are almost inevitable when emotions are running high. They just happen. I think most people get caught in situations they couldn't imagine and could not see the events lining up the way they do.

I just don't buy the racism claim in the sense that it was the motive. These guys were just pissed and frustrated. Maybe the ref was racist or not, but an important aspect of this story that has been under-reported is that only one of the kids was ejected. The other stayed in the game because the refs made a mistake and misidentified the wrong kid and ejected another teammate. And then, on the last play of the game, Moreno (who didn't get ejected) went after the opposing team's QB and hit him late. It was on a kneel-down play! So, what's the excuse there? Did the opposing QB saw something racist too? These guys were just frustrated with calls (which they admitted they were) and totally lost their sportsmanship.

Edit: I just noticed this mention on page 4. My bad. I did add the bit that it was a kneel-down play though.

If I'm not mistaken three kids on the team were told to go after the ref. One kid chose NOT to take action where the other two did. Why? Because he knew it was wrong.

Will somebody please think of the refs?
