The Comets have ALWAYS needed a good point guard and this girl is top 2 in the league. This should be a pretty good move for the girls. Maybe now Lyttle can get som epT since Rasmussen is gone.

Anyway, good move for the Comets - could be 'the' move to get the ring. Staley can play!

Trade gives Staley chance to win a championship

Associated Press

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Three-time Olympic gold medalist Dawn Staley was traded by the Charlotte Sting to Houston on Monday in a move that gives her a better chance to win a WNBA title before retirement.

Staley, a four-time All-Star and two-time NCAA player of the year, started all 219 games of her Charlotte career. But at 35, she's been long considering retirement to focus on her role as head coach of Temple's women's team.

Knowing that her playing days were coming to an end, the Sting overhauled their roster this season in an attempt to win the WNBA title. The moves have all backfired and Charlotte is a league-worst 3-20.

She now heads to Houston, which at 14-10 is in second-place in the Western Conference.

The Sting also gave Houston their second-round pick in next year's draft. In return, Charlotte got the Comets' first-round pick in 2006, along with Kristen Rasmussen and Adriene Goodson.

It's the second big trade right before the WNBA deadline. The Detroit Shock acquired five-time All-Star Katie Smith in a trade with the Minnesota Lynx on Saturday night, adding the WNBA's career 3-point leader to a lineup trying to earn a postseason berth.

Probably not since Staley is 35 and about to retire but it's a darn good thing for this year.

Who's the other one?

Teasley and Johnson are pretty good. I do not consider Taurasi a PG -- it will only be a matter of time before they move her to SG.

I'm still not sure about Bird.

Bird is one of 3 or 4 good players in the league; not sure how you could be unsure about her

I feel like the #1 point guard in the league is Lindsey Whalen.

This should be a very good move for this year. Tina is starting to come into play, with a few games under her belt. Sheryl is about to capture her 3rd MVP award, and Snow and Janeth have been playing pretty consistant. Adding Staley can only make it better......she is by far the smartest point guard the WNBA has known.

Staley is an excellent pick-up... but I think she'll be best for next season. For all the talk about Van having coached her in the Olympics already, it always takes time for players to adjust, especially to a team like the Comets that has so many weapons. Heck, even Tina Thompson coming back this year has rocked the boat a little bit... they lost some games they shouldn't have (Read: San Antonio).

I'll agree that Lindsey Whalen is one of the best in the league already (scary) and that she definetely got snubbed for the All-Star game this year (ironically by none other than Staley). But to me, Bird is the best PG in the league... she's leading the league in assists with about 6 per game, and has been getting 7 or so in the last 5 games. Take that with her league-leading 3PT% (48%), and I don't think it's very close.

Staley is only the 3rd-best in the league if you don't count Taurasi and Hammon as "true" PGs. Otherwise, those two are clearly better.

But honestly, I don't think any of this matters too much... because Sacramento is blowing everyone away in the West. I know we're 1-1 against them this season, but Sacramento has won 6 straight, and I don't see them being stopped short by anyone but Connecticut in the Finals. Griffith is their only player over age 30, and she's still playing like she's 28. DeMya Walker is an All-Star since being moved to the 4, Powell gives the Monarchs their first true "3" in the history of their franchise, and Penicheiro is still the only player in league history to average 8 assists for a season (no one else has ever averaged as many as 7 assists, something that Penicheiro did in her first 5 seasons)... she's only 30. Take all that with a deep bench: Brunson (up-and-coming PF), Lawson (another scary 3-PT threat), Haynie (guard who's leading the league in steals per 40 min), along with the two best female Chinese players in the world, Sui FeiFei and Miao Li Jie (though they have been seldom used), and you have a team that has a shot at being one of the greatest teams this league has ever seen. The Monarchs are beating their opponents by an average of 8 points... Conneticut by 6... the next best is far below those two: the Liberty with +2, leaving the Storm and Comets at +1. Make no mistake about it: this is a two-team race.

We can hope that Van works some magic, but realistically it'll be next year before all these pieces have a chance at toppling Sac.
