Kind of interesting, I suppose. The Mets are the Mavericks of baseball. Keep mixing and matching parts that underachieve or don't fit, for the sake of getting on the back page. I don't see how Manny will get his "privacy" in NY.
Manny AND Baez for no current MLers. Ouch to the WC chase if this goes thru.

They would get Aubrey Huff and Mike Cameron. I was hoping the Stros would make a move for Huff. After a slow start he's starting to look like the .300/30/100 guy he's been the last couple of years.

and now it's off, at least as written about...all according to ESPN.
TB killed the deal as of now.

Wow! That dies quick. Just 5 minutes ago they were talking about it on Sportcenter. I was hoping the Mets wouldn't get Manny. he could have a big effect on the Wild Card.
I was suprised to see Nevin go to Texas for Park (still to be approved by commish.) I didn't think anyone would ever want to pay Park what's on his contract. Too bad we had nowhere to place Nevin.

For now, there is an ultimate deadline of 12 noon Saturday (7-30-05) set by the three teams involved.
PS. I would love to land Huff or Ibanez.
Oh well...

Huff would be a perfect fit. Another left handed bat who can cover the corner outfield. He's got some speed and is starting to turn his season around. If he came here could be a 25 and 100 guy who also doesn't strike out much. Sandwiched between Lance and Ensberg that would cause problems.
Ahhh....we can dream. Hunsicker could get the job done, let's see what Purpura can do. :(
Looks like the ChiSox are looking hard at him, especially with the Big Hurt out for the year now. Man, that name fits him perfectly in so many ways. :D

Mets prospect Milledge key piece to trade puzzle
The proposed three-team trade involving the Red Sox, New York Mets and Tampa Bay Devil Rays -- with Boston outfielder Manny Ramirez at the heart of it -- is still alive and still being discussed, baseball sources said Saturday.
The proposal took on a different shape late Friday into Saturday, however.
The Red Sox would acquire Mets outfielder Mike Cameron and pitcher Aaron Heilman, and Devil Rays outfielder/designated hitter Aubrey Huff; the Mets would get Ramirez, reliever Danys Baez and shortstop Julio Lugo; and the Devil Rays would still get four prospects, but the prospects are being reconsidered.
An official with one of the three teams told ESPN.com that the Mets never walked away from the deal Friday night over money. Rather, it was over their reluctance to let go of Lastings Milledge, one of their top prospects. Saturday, however, the Mets have softened on that stance.
If Milledge is still included in the current proposal, Red Sox prospect Hanley Ramirez gets thrown into the mix. Milledge would potentially go to the Red Sox, and Ramirez would get shipped to Tampa Bay.
Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays have talked to the Red Sox as well and made an "inquisitive call" about Manny Ramirez, sources said.
Late Friday, the Red Sox, Mets and Devil Rays had decided that if they couldn't get a deal patched by noon Saturday, they would have no choice but to move on, an executive with one of the teams said late Friday night. Major League Baseball's trade deadline is 4 p.m. ET on Sunday.
"If there are any complications involving Manny's contract, or any financial ramifications [such as luxury tax or deferral issues, they] would require the approval of the commissioner's office," the executive said. "So this is not the kind of deal you can do at 3:59 p.m. Sunday."
Given that deadline, the executive said, "it's looking like it's not going to happen. Time's just running out. At some point it just becomes too late."
According to a baseball official familiar with the discussions, the proposed trade "hit a roadblock" late Friday.
In addition to the initial proposal of Ramirez and Baez being sent to the Mets, the Red Sox would acquire Huff and Cameron, and the Devil Rays receiving two prospects apiece from New York and Boston.
But a source said the Red Sox felt they could not go ahead with trading Ramirez and two prime prospects -- reportedly catcher Kelly Shoppach and right-hander Anibal Sanchez -- if all they were receiving was Cameron and Huff. So they went back to the Mets "for more pieces," the source reported.
At that point, the Mets "squashed the whole thing" and talks broke off. A baseball man with knowledge of the discussions said the Red Sox asked the Mets for a "key player," whom the Mets felt they couldn't trade. It is believed that Milledge was this player.
An official of another club that spoke with the Mets on Friday night said the Mets also had reservations about going ahead with the deal because they would have had to assume all $64 million of Ramirez's contract, and that would have put them both over budget and over the luxury-tax threshold.
Senior writer Jayson Stark covers Major League Baseball for ESPN.com.

Won't happen..not for the amount of money we would have to pay Manny. Unless Boston is willing to pay a part of his salary.
I just don't see Drayton paying 22 Million for him. But it would be lovely to pair manny up with the Crawford Boxes.

We need to hop in and get Aubrey Huff, not Manny. Huff fills our needs just fine. Tampa would only want pospects, so why not dangle Burke and Lane to them?

Honestly why would you trade Lane for Huff? They basically have the same stats if your looking at it. Huff has had more at bats than Lane but overall they are basically comparable and they can be interchanged.
Huff -
H/AB - 99/367
2B - 17
HR - 13
RBI - 63
BB - 32
K's - 62
AVG - .270
Lane -
H/AB - 78/315
2B - 24
HR - 15
RBI - 45
BB - 19
K's - 65
AVG - .248
If you give Lane as many at bats they honestly would be even statistically and Huff strikes out just as much. So that deal would really be a wash.

those stats aren't really a wash, to be honest - and Huff has a track record over the past few years of performing well above what he's done this year - and he's starting to heat up in July.
He'd be a definite upgrade at the corner outfield spot.

Look at Huff's last 3 years - he's a 25-30HR guy that bats .300, and he's left-handed. Offensively, he's exactly what the team is looking for. He had a horrible first 3 months of this season, but has shown his previous form in July.

Exactly. He's making up for those bad 3 months pretty quick. It's a long shot but he could possible end up with 30 hr's here. Too bad i haven't heard of us pursuing him, or anybody for that matter other than a left handed bullpen arm.

The thing is, the Devil Rays are a tough an organization to work with - for a lot of varying reasons. It is a minor miracle that Chuck LaMar is still gainfully employed.
Baseball Tonight revealed that the when the Mets enquired about Danys Baez, the D-Rays first asked for David Wright or Jose Reyes - which is ridiculous. While they may have stolen Kazmir for Zambrano from the same organization last year, that was just a ludicrous request.
That is not to say that Purpura doesn't need to make some sort of move to bring in a bat - but it's a seller's market and prices are inflated - and if a deal gets done, I'd be shocked if it was with the D-Rays.

You're absolutley right. TB just wants the best prospects that they can throw in the field and look like they're fielding a big league team.
There are way to many buyers, since everyone has a legitimate shot at the wild card. Too bad we couldn't of started this run a couple weeks earlier. That would of least knocked a couple teams out of hope.
It seems like Cincy wants every minor league pitching prospect plus more for Dunn. Whoever gets him will have to break the bank and set their farm system back a couple years.
Then Florida won't deal Burnett w/o Lowell. Only the Yankees could take that deal.
In the end, i think this will be the lamest trading deadline in recent memory.

Yeah everyone is asking way to much for their goods and are trying to dump people that no one else wants. it's going to be really boring and only minor deals will go through. With too many teams in the wild card race it's bringing the value of these trade bait players to a new high becuase they know what value it holds for the teams in the race.
Oh well maybe were all wrong and a deal goes through that no one expected...but i highly doubt it.

I'm glad the Stros haven't made a move (minus that missing lefty in the pen)... and I hope they don't unless they just get an amazing player for next to nothing. We are in great shape to make the playoffs without a move, and I don't want us to trade away our prospects for nothing like we have so many times in the past.

Besides picking up another arm in the bullpen I wouldn't mind if they went out a got a backup catcher. I'm not impressed with Humberto and getting a backup shouldn't cost us too much.

Manny is such a flake, you don't know what might happen if they close this deal. If he falls out of favor with the NY fans, it could get reeeeally ugly. Boston fans are rough but NY fans and media love to mercilessly provoke athletes. If/when he starts flaking out a bit, let's see. If he stays focused, he will help them a lot and the Mets now become our #1 rival for the Wild Card.

You're right that he'll eventually do something to piss off the NY media. Maybe jogging to first base or his all star defensive caliber outfield plays, but most likely just the stupid things he says.
However, i'm completely missing the point where Manny gets more privacy in NY of all places than Boston.

The Red Sox just traded for Jose Cruz Jr. Not sure if this means anything in relation to Manny possibly getting moved.
