Considering the way the pitching match-ups line up. I think it would be a succesful series if we only lost one game to the Nationals in the Wild Card race - if we ended up tied - or somehow passed them - it'll be a tremendous series.

It would be cool if the fans brought a rowdy playoff type atmosphere to the beginning of game one with the Mets. Boo Beltran, scream, cheer and pump the Astros up. Get behind young Astacio on the mound and then let the Astro bats erupt for some first inning scoring.

OK no more daydreaming, back to my day job.

Nick
07-28-2005, 04:25 PM
If Astacio keeps the ball down, he's effective. If he doesn't, he's not. Its as simple as that.

Pedro will stifle us, but I don't think he'll shut us out. Regardless... I expect it to be an intense series where the focus will mainly be on the wild card chase, and not on Beltran's return (and who thought we'd be saying that 2 months ago...)

Uprising

I bet you didn't know this!

The three-time Cy Young Award winner is just 5-7 with a 4.36 ERA in 16 lifetime games - 13 starts - against the Astros, who are the only team that has a winning record against Martinez.

I feel better about our chances. Go Stros!

Well, if the Mets get a big lead here... that's to be expected. Even if they don't, I guess Pedro has earned those sort of calls over the years.

I have watched Zeke at Round Rock all year, and I could never figure out why he was getting shelled so bad in the bigs.....well the last 2 games he is pitching just like he did in the minors...maybe it was a confidence thing?

Maybe it is time for him to be in the bigs as the number 5 starter?

yeah, you have to expect the boos. however, i don't feel real good about it and, if i were there, would not join in.

it sucks that he left us and it sucks that he strung us along all offseason, and that does draw my ire a little, but he was part of the miracle run to the playoffs last year and his god-like performance in the playoffs was a big reason we had our only taste of playoff success ever and came within one game of the world series. i have a hard time really hating him after all of that (especially since he didn't really owe us any loyalty after only 4 or so months with us) just b/c he wanted more money.

i certainly don't root for him, and do enjoy him struggling and thus being massively overpaid for his new team (that team being from nyc just makes it better), but i can't work up the hate for him most seem to have. and i'm a guy who loves to hate me some athletes.

Why are the 'stros in the WC chase? Because, I offer from some observation and zero factual back up, the Good Guys pitchers do an unbelievable job of staying cool and working out of trouble. And what pitcher, over the last 100 years, ever told his manager "I'm tired coach... go ahead and take me out."

It never happens.

Also, he wasn't working on full rest anyways... so you have to evaluate this one a little differently.

Agreed... if only because Cairo put his head down in disgust after he made contact, and that ball had no velocity off the bat whatsoever.

Ausmus had one back in 2000 where the Cardinals announcers were just saying over and over again, "This place is a joke.... this place is a joke... this place is a joke." (and they're still scarred till today about how this park opened in 2000... while they ignore the fact that Busch has actually had a higher park rating factor the last few years).

i think we should've kept the bunt on. with pedro going well, i'd rather take 2 shots at getting the guy in from third (which wouldn't even require a hit w/ one out) than 3 shots at getting him in from second, especially with everett and crew coming up.

i would've thought the mets would try at least one pitchout, knowing how weak a hitter ausmus is. you've gotta be thinking squeeze, and you know you can still get brad out even wasting a ball. you can't pitchout again if the squeeze isn't on the first pitch, but i'd still try it the first pitch.

Forget about Astacio... just look at what Oswalt has done since Brad started catching him again. He's back to where he was in 2001 and 2002, after all his numbers took a pretty sharp decline last year (he was still good... but he was much more hittable when Chavez was handling him).

Oswalt by himself is a pretty darn good pitcher... but with Ausmus, he's a hall-of-famer.

Got to love the fact that Beltran's return drew the 4th largest crowd in Minute Maid history.

Beltran, the star of Houston's postseason run last October, went 0-for-4, hitting three infield grounders and an easy fly to center. He also helped draw a crowd of 43,552, the second-biggest of the season and fourth-largest in the 6-year history of the ballpark.

In official scoring a DP cannot be assumed (one of the stupider scoring rules). On that particular play all they could reasonably assume was an out at first or second, thus the runner would still have been at 3rd with one out and would have scored on the SF.

Honestly, I don't think you could necessarily count on a double-play on that particular play because Beltran runs so well. Plus 3-6-3 and 3-6-1 double plays are just tougher to execute because whoever covers first really has to hustle to get over to the bag.

was it close or another blunder by the 3rd base coach?

It was a conventional move. Runner on 2nd, 2 outs, single to left field. Everett's a fast runner, and we have a 3 run lead. In any other ballpark, he's probably safe.

Because of the Crawford Boxes, the LF is shallower. Any time with 2 outs and a fairly safe lead, you challenge the outfielder to make a good throw, especially with a guy who's not one of your better RBI men on deck in Taveras.

The Mets just threw their 2 best records/ERAs against our 2 worst ERAs and lost twice. Now we bring the pain with Pettitte and Roy O. This team is fun to watch, and with this starting pitching and the Wheeler/Lidge end game, we will be dangerous down the stretch.

Wandy and Zeke have pitched exceptionally well lately...enough to make me consider moving Nieve, Buchholz, or Hirsh if the right deal is there.

This team just seems so unbeatable right now. At home or on the road. To me, the biggest test was right after the Cardinals series. We had been on a tear going into the All Star break, and then we suddenly get brought down a peg (or two) by the Cardinals. It would have been real easy for the Stros to get discouraged at that point and think that maybe they aren't as good as they had been playing. Instead, they go right back to their winning ways as if they had swept the Cardinals instead of being swept. That was gut check time, and the Stros passed with flying colors.

haha. I went to the game, and was actually sitting about 4 rows in front and to the left of that He's Lying sign down the 3rd base line. The booing for Beltran was non-stop like I expected (was loudest when he scored that run and almost hit a HR), and my seats were great to see those homeruns. Wasn't as dramatic as some of the other games, but with Beltran, 3 homers, and a young pitcher pitching good, it was exciting.

It looked like Berkman botched that because he was too close to the runner which is why Everett had to throw it up high.

nah, Everett just "bloops" balls far too often... if he wouldn't have thrown it like a girly-man the runner would have been out. He needs to get more zip on the ball. From time to time he'll throw a rainbow to first and make the first baseman do a Jordan impression.

THis doesn't make any sense, what happened?

Top 6TH B:0 S:1 O:1
With Miguel Cairo batting, Jose Reyes picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, throwing error by Adam Everett.

It was a rundown and Everett made a bad throw.

Reyes was caught in a run down, but Adam botched the throw and Reyes got back to 1st.

Actually, to me it looked like Everett was trying to throw to Pettite and Berkman intercepted it.

Can Piazza be anymore worthless? He actually almost makes me feel sorry for Met's fan. 16 Million for a guy hitting .263 with 12 homers, 46 RBIs, no throwing arm and maybe the game's slowest box to first time.
