I'm guessing one of the Mets players was frustrated and saying something from the dugout and Backe was reacting towards that and the ump got in front of him and told him to chill.

It is always fun hangin' with someone like that.
Its amazing how POWERFUL these last two years have been for the Houston Astros impact on the city, and all of baseball:
1.) Houston is a bonafied baseball town... the collective baseball IQ of this town is approaching an all-time high (not to mention the continued great attendance #'s, and raucous crowds).
2.) Minute Maid Park has turned into one of the more FAIR parks in the league... as long as Pettite, Oswalt, and Clemens are on the mound. My prediction is in 10 years (as long as pitchers continue to not be "scared" of this place), people will look at it more like they look at Fenway (a park which can play either way), rather than like Coors (a park that only plays one way).
3.) Brandon Backe has approached cult status in Houston and Brad Lidge has approached cult status around the nation... he is now the preeminant closer in all of baseball.
4.) Carlos Beltran, after suffering for years of playing in a small market, and not being a household name... is now a household name... and he is suffering, because now everybody is all over him when he fails.
5.) While the Astros have been synonymous with just Biggio & Bagwell throughout the 90's, they've been much more of a TEAM the last two years... with a new hero every night. Also, the marquee value is still very much there: Oswalt, Clemens, Pettite, Lidge, Berkman, Biggio, and now Ensberg.
Lidge striking out Beltran was fantastico.

Brad Lidge has approached cult status around the nation... he is now the preeminant closer in all of baseball.
as much as we would like that to be true, as long as mariano "the hammer of God" rivera, the greatest closer ever, is putting up a 0.81 ERA with a 0.74 WHIP and hasn't blown a save since early april, Lidge can't be #1.
as far as who is sickest. at their best, i would say lidge and rivera are tied. there is simply no one who can hit either of their main pitches (cut fastball and slider). overall, it has to be rivera.
as far as wagner, whatever he may not have done in the postseason, in the regular season he's a badass. he's got better numbers than lidge to this point in the year and his best season (1999) makes lidge look like a chump.
however, going back to big moments, since lidge seems to brings his A+ slider to big moments and since, despite the numbers, you just feel better with him on the mound than wagner (which is saying something), i'd definitely rather have lidge than wagner.
and how much more disgusting could lidge have been tonight outside of his first pitch to beltran?
1st batter: nasty slider, swing and miss. nasty slider, swing and miss. nasty slider, weak grounder.
2nd batter: nasty slider on the corner, swing and miss. 97 mph fastball, swing and miss. 97 mph fastball, swing and miss.
3rd batter aka public enemy #1: ball. 97 mph fastball on the corner at the knees. 97 mph fastball on the corner at the knees. disgusting slider on the corner that had to have looked exactly the same height as the two previous fastballs, swing and miss.
i doubt he could've walked up and placed the ball in ausmus' mit better than he threw it on about 7 of those pitches.

oh man what a turn around by these Astros. They are untouchables, they are hot, they will win 1-0 ball games, and they will win the central division. BOOOOOK IT!!!!!!!
And Lidge is better than Rivera, my opinion.
if lidge never got the flu or whatever he had his numbers would be more even more impressive than they are. there was a good stretch when his fastball topped out in the low 90's, and he didn't look himself at all. now that he's gained back his strength he's untouchable.
at this point i'd take lidge over rivera, cause talent-wise lidge is there and he's younger. however, rivera doesn't just get attention cause he's from new york. he's just damn good.

The Mets arguing this is pretty stupid... if the umpire said ball 4, that's the only reason Lance started to walk as well. It wasn't as if they had him "picked off", and the umpires decided to give him a second life... it was the umps fault, not Lance's.
In the end, this whole thing probably won't mean much to the final score anyways...

[QUOTE=Nick]if the umpire said ball 4, that's the only reason Lance started to walk as well.[QUOTE]
If the ump says nothing & Mo starts heading to first, and Lance sees this & starts off to second...it's a live ball unless the ump stops play (i.e. acknowledges his mistake).
The scoreboard had the count wrong, but the scoreboard is there for the fans, the umps hold sway on the field. The ump announces the count (or should) before every pitch.
Basically, we don't know what was said on the field. Berkman and Mo (and Lane & others) have had their share of spacecadet moments, though.

Yea... his name was mentioned as a possible guy the Astros could target. But, do I think he would have "made the difference?"... no. Its becoming obvious that this team's main need is offense. Only after you have that firmly established do things like situational lefty relief get fulfilled.

Damn....
Would Anderson have scored had he not stole third?
According to ESPN,
The Chicago Cubs have improved their outfield by picking up Matt Lawton from the Pittsburgh Pirates.
I'm not saying that Lawton is a great pick up for them (because they got tons of other problems besides offense), but what's the deal with Pittsburgh bendin over backwards to trade every marginally good player they've got to Chicago???
I'll still never forgive them for giving up Aramis Ramierez and Kenny Lofton for virtually nothing.

Because they wanted a Lefty vs. Lefty in that situation...they brought in Gallo just to face Floyd and it didn't work out.

Yeah Lawton is mediocre at best. Not a difference maker imo.

He's not a difference maker, but he should could have helped us. He gets on base a ton, and would have came in with the 2nd highest OBP on the team behind only Berkman.

How much of that OBP had to do with the fact that there isn't much of anybody in the Pittsburgh lineup who can hurt you (they've been worse than us this year).
Lawton has also been known as a me-first guy... the type of guy who doesn't care that much about winning.
Would he have helped us.. yea.... but would he have made us significantly better, no.

He's always been a good on-base guy, and his current OBP is not that much better than he did last year, and in line with his career numbers.
Dang it,Cameron leads off with a double :( Come on Dan!

Lets forget about the streaks and hopefully pull this one out this inning or bottom of the 9th again. I want to sweep these guys bad....considering the Cubs are getting blown out as well.

Phil Garner makes some of the most bizarre moves I've ever seen. Palmeiro is available as a PH, Burke has done absolutely nothing, Palmeiro got a hit vs. Hernandez the other night... and Garner leaves Palmeiro on the bench. Even if he wanted to save Palmeiro for the pitchers spot (where he's batting now) why not PH Willy for Burke?
You have six outs left to avoid losing. To waste one of those outs with Burke when options like Palmeiro, Taveras and Vizcaino are available is absolutely inexcusable.
Lets hold them down this inning and pull of a GW....please :(

From ESPN live chat--
Astros Fan (Camp Darby, Italy): Why did the Astros not get another big bat? I believe they will need it to continue the push for the wildcard and to get through October. What do you think Rob?
SportsNation Rob Neyer: (5:00 PM ET ) If it weren't so hard to get a big bat, more teams would have done it. But I do think it's a real concern for the Astros, who have three or four zeroes in their lineup and have thrived only because their top three starters are doing (or rather, have done) something truly incredible. Can Clemens and Pettitte really pitch this well for six months? Then again, their competition seems to be slipping, so unless the Phillies or Marlins get hot, maybe it doesn't matter.

It's not the reason for this potential loss, but I feel so bad for all of these guys. As great as they are, Clemens, Oswalt, Pettitte, Wheeler, and others have all played well over their heads to get the Astros to where they are. I always assumed, though, that Purpura would get them some help midseason to ease the load. But he failed, much as he did in the weeks after losing Beltran in the offseason. I don't want to judge too much too fast, but after this season, I'm not exactly optimistic about the Tim Purpura era of the Astros.
Well the pen just didnt get the job done today and Roy-O was bound to have a game or two where he struggles, and it just always happens to be against the Mets.
I'd just like to see the Stros bounce back from this game with some solid hitting on Tuesday to support Clemens on the road.
Anyone know what the Stros record is in day games?

could russ springer have possibly been any more worthless today? got scared of every good hitter they had and then gives up a nice hit on a hanger when he finally decides to throw a strike. thank God the starters have been going deep enough to avoid using him.
of course, the whole pitching staff sucked today (how many 2 strike hits did we give up?). oswalt had beltran at 2 strikes and 2 outs, gives up the lead. then qualls has carlos at 2 strikes and 2 outs, and puts him on. then floyd at 2 strikes and 2 outs and blows oswalt's win. then wheeler just blew and springer topped him.
oh well, clemens is going on the road tomorrow so that should help.

Can't win them all...but with O on the mound at home you would have thunk a win would be pretty easy.
Then again we beat Pedro with Astacio on the mound and beat Glavine last night...so I'll take 3 out of 4 against the Mets. We knocked them 2 games back also.
Stros lose :( ,time to start a new streak on Tuesday.
I'll take 3 out of 4 against any team any day of the week.

this game was like slow water torture. we'd get a lead, and then the mets would get the lead off guy on and just slowly move him around and score with 2 strikes and 2 outs. and just do it over and over and over, each time coming so close to getting out of the inning. meanwhile, we load the bases and get a 2-0 count and lance swings at a borderline strike from a guy who couldn't find the plate and pops up (after GIDPing earlier with men on). and then we can't even score in the 9th with 3 guys on. what a draining day.
hopefully no residual effects and we keep going againt arizona.

Just got back from the game, talk about a different experience from last night. Anyway, I will take three out of four anyday of the week. I really think this was just one of those games. Over the last couple of weeks we have really showed ourselves to be better than most of our wild card competitors, however, there is a lot of work to do and a lot of season left. Lets get it going against the snakes.
``My arm's dead, my legs are dead -- I'm just grinding,'' Oswalt said. ``I think it's just the innings piling up on me. Usually you have a dead arm around 100 innings. Maybe for me it's around 170.''

Does anyone else wonder why Gallo is a major league pitcher? I mean, seriously, I'm sure we have someone else available in the minors who's merely "bad" as opposed to downright bloody awful. Who gives a damn if he's a lefty...a terrible left hander is worse than bad right-hander.
Having a lefty specialist is nice. Having a tterrible lefty specialist merely because he's a lefty is idiocy.

I think Mike Gallo has done a fine job this season. He has an ERA of 2.35 WHIP of 1.04 and a 6-1 K/BB ratio. He's only pitched 7 2/3 innings, so he needs to keep it up, however, he has appeared in 13 games. But I would take "downright bloody awful" anyday if that's your definition of it. In fact, the man has the 3rd lowest ERA on our entire staff this season. Everyone gives up runs sooner or later so just chill out next time it happens instead of calling the man unworthy of his major-league status.

Since when is a career ERA of 3.9, and an ERA this year of 2.3 not major-league caliber?

No. Seriously.
Previous to the Floyd single Sunday (he pitched him well in that AB, made a mistake with a FB, and Floyd was locked in at the plate that day), his appearances this year have been:
Chase Utley - opposite field flyout, Bob Abreau - groundout to 2nd
Cliff Floyd - K
Brad Wilkerson - sac bunt, Jose Vidro - groundout to 2nd
Brad Wilkerson - popout to 2nd, Brian Schneider - flyout to LF
vs. PITT - groundout, bunt single, fielder's choice grounder, infield single
vs. PITT - single, Lawton GIDP, Bay flyout
Larry Walker - popout
vs. LA - K, groundout
Eric Young K, Brian Giles BB, Roberto Hernandez flyout, Klesko groundout
Giles groundout, Fick single
Klesko triple, Giles single, Blum K
vs. CIN - lineout, K, hit batter, K
Who would you replace him with? Why do you feel they would do a better job?
