View Full Version : Was anyone else there in 1984?
If this shouldn't be a new thread, please blow it away and forgive me.
I was there 21 years ago today when Mike Torrez beaned Dickie Thon in the head. Was anyone else here at that game? It was horrible--dude was writhing on the ground like a snake after you run over it with a lawnmower. I can't imagine how much that hurt. The year after his breakout season, too. Major bummer.

I wasn't at the game, but was listening on the radio.Yeah, that's just terrible what happened to Dickie. He was a legitimate .300 20 HR guy w/speed..should have had a long career as a perrenial all star with us maybe winning a W. S. at some point.Factor in what happened to J.R.,and I'm quite sure we would have won the whole enchilada..at least once.It was tough seeing him try to hang on with the Phillies later.

I was there. We were sitting in the field boxes between 3rd and home, about 12 rows up.
Wasn't there, but remember the incident well. Dickie Thon was on his way to an exceptional career. He played a few more seasons but was never the same. Quite a shame.
So why do you bring it up? Just curious.

I was 5 at the time, and probably picking daisies at a little league game... or eating Elmer's paste.

Was over at AstrosDaily.com, and on the left they have a "This Day in Astros History" feature. It piqued my interest as to who else was there and remembers it as vividly as I do.

:(
My brothers, who came here in '84, remember it quite well. I remember seeing [low]lights of that game, and it stuck in my head so much I was afraid to play baseball for a while...

I don't remember her name, but she is (was?) a black comedienne who used to be on Night Court. In her standup routine she mentioned that "Dickie Thon" was among her favorite names. She said it "sounded like a benefit for horny women".
