View Full Version : What is your religion

What is your religion? And why? and did your parents(or people you grew up with) also have the same religion?
I do not want big discussions, and name calling(basically please do not ban it to the D&D)

I am an atheist. My parents send me to a christian school, they wanted me to know what the religion was about, but they both are not christians.

i just asked wich religion people have, to get an indication about this site. If it goes to the D&D i will not get a good indication. And furthermore this is not a thread where people should discus the religion.

that is what i'm afraid of. But i thought that if i posted in the D&D that it would defenitly turn into a riligous discussion thread. And i hoped that it might not if i posted it in the Hangout.
we will see.:D

My mom was raised Baptist, but switched to Presbyterian; my dad, Episcopalian. (In the context of this poll, that's all Christian.) They decided that my sister and I should be able to make our own choices about religion, so we never went to church with them as children. To my mom's surprise, we both ended up atheist.

Raised Baptist, both parents are. Discovered Deism in AP history class of all places and I consider myself a Deist to this day.

Kind of hard not to when the thread is titled "What is your religion?"

There are poly-theistic religions (i.e. Hinduism). I guess I'd be poly-religious. I find all traditions pretty damn fascinating, but don't ascribe myself to any one of them. I'm probably most strongly drawn toward easter religions like Buddhism and Taoism, but of all the religion's leaders/prophets/founders/etc, Jesus was by far the most influential on me.

So, I'm sort of a Christo-Budd-Tao-ist with humanist tendencies. :)

My dad and my mom are both Presbyterian - I became Presbyterian when I was 8, when my dad decided that going to church was better for me than sitting around watching NASCAR all sunday afternoon.

I went to church for 10 years, moved to Austin and tried to get involved with the Pres church up there, and found nothing but snotty uppity people who actually managed to make me feel like an outcast.

I haven't been back to church since then. I'm currently without church, and I like it - it gives me the freedom to explore the other religions as I please.

hinduism is often mistaken to be a polytheistic religion, but it is monotheistic.

Seventh-Day Adventist...Christian.

mostly because of my parents. i'm not really one anymore, but their beliefs tend to be closest to mine, probably because of growing up in the church.

Raised Pentecostal, although due to our physical distance from the church I had more friends outside of the pentecostal faith. Nowadays I I am probably one of the most morally repugnant people you'd ever want to meet ;)

I voted other

Hinduism - Live a good life, pray to Chrisna, pray to Vishnu, pray to whoever. Karma helps Brahman make up his mind to what you are going to come back as. Read the Bhagavad-Gita, study the Vedas.

Buddhism - 4 Fold Plan, 1.) Life is suffering. 2.) Suffering is caused by desire 3.) By elimnating desire, suffering ceases. 4.) Enlightenment can be achieved by following the 8 fold plan. Sounds a little like a big denial of that which is human nature to me. I do think the Mahayana Buddhists (Which includes Ch'an or Zen) have a better understanding than the others.

Confucianism - Rules are good, Confucius was a pretty smart guy, and I don't think Confucianism is really even much of a "religion" at all. You make choices, you follow a certain path, maybe read some I Ching stuff.

Taoism - **** the system. Lao-Tzu was a pretty cool guy. He said "Hey **** you guys I'm leaving" then he writes this Tao Te Ching thing in like 2 days leaves it with some kid and goes away forever.

Christianity - Accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior, obey God... Read the Bible and pray for guidance, Go to church. Sounds so easy.

Judiasm - Same as Christianity accept no Jesus stuff, and throw in the Torah and the customs.

Islam - The ultimate in monotheism, Mohammad sure caused quite a ruckus. I found it fascinating how he went from the town looney to damn near Emporer of the East. It has a lot of similarities to Christianity and Judaism yet remains the most opposed. 192 times the al-Qu'ran speaks of peace and mentions death and destruction and violence about 17 times. Yet it does include things like "Take them out and kill them if they don't convert" which is a bit extremist.

I just have not found a religion that hits my spiritual tuning fork. I discussed what I believe briefly in this thread. (http://bbs2.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?s=&threadid=93399)

I am extremely spiritual, but not religious at all.

I am a presbyterian in a denomination that is described as "Reformed Evangelical." I believed in God from as far back as I can remember but I wouldn't say I was a Christian before late high-school. For several years I tried to avoid the PCA(Presbyterian Church of America) and searched for another denomination with a theology that I could agree with. When we moved to Houston JV was helping me look for a church and we wound up in the PCA again.

My mother is a nominal Christian. My father was in seminary when my parents met and he was ordained in the Reformed Church of France which is fairly similar to the PCA. Growing up I attended the Episcapol church for a while and a PCUSA church. My father is no longer a minister but he does teach apologetics amoung other subjects.

There used to be more like you in the GOP, at least the secular humanist liberal/(and moderate) kind. They have been marginalized and pushed aside by the extremists who have been running the GOP for the last several years. My inclination would be to suggest fighting the good fight within the GOP... the tide will turn sooner or later, but as a realist, I think you're more apt, in the short to mid-term, to get more done in the Democratic Party. Those like you are more than welcome.

Despite what some might say, the Democratic Party has a big tent, which others might say (ardent liberal Democrats, which describes me on most issues, although I'm a practical conservative on defense. I want the strongest military on the planet, but I don't want money tossed away on meaningless pork) is the problem. That we have misplaced our soul as a party. That many have tried to appeal to conservative Republicans too much, and compromised too much, in an attempt to win elections, and in the process muddied the message of the Party.

Hell, I agree with that, basically, but I don't want us to make the same mistake the Republicans have made, and turn away from the center that is the majority of the country... the center that is far more moderate than the Republican Leadership would have anyone believe, and has yet to see a leader of the Democratic Party, and a platform that can be strongly expressed by that leader, that they can relate to and understand.

The current Republican Leadership boils everything down to the meanest understanding. Attack, attack, attack... and if the opposition attacks back, spend millions whining and complaining about it, and "telling the world" that those mean, terrible, unfair Democrats are just, well, being mean and unfair. They try to muddy the waters so much, bludgeoning the general public with their twisted message of fear, lies and hate, that they vote for what "seems" to be the "safer choice." Reality has no meaning to the Republican Leadership. All that matters is winning the next election, and advancing their extremist positions, while rewarding their big business contributors with more largess then they ever dreamed would be coming their way.

Argh. I could go on, but I need to eat lunch! :)
