Former Pittsburg Steelers wide receiver Lynn Swann is gaining momentum in a likely run for Pennsylvania's governor in 2006 against Democrat Ed Rendell (hat tip Political Diary email). Far from another celebrity looking for high office, Swann has been putting in the time and paying his dues. He's been the chairman of the Presidents Council on Physical Fitness (as was Arnold under Bush 41). He also co-chaired African Americans for Bush during the runup to the election.

He also spoke at the RNC Convention here in NYC last year.

This will be a fun race. Rendell is a popular guy up there and a loss would pretty much end any presidential aspirations he may (or may not) have.

Basso: I don't understand why you need to come out throwing bombs. Wouldn't it be better to wait for someone else to start the race-baiting and then responding? You aren't setting much of a tone here...

Wow, he co-chaired African Americans for Bush? He must be very good at what he does.

Edit: did his race have anything to do with the decision to appoint him cochair of AA's for Bush, btw? I thought Republicans favored a color blind society where race should not be taken into account.

A real difference maker.

The libs are already in smear mode. That means one thing: They are scared.

Their party is already in disarray, and any erosion to their previously-thought-to-be rock solid black base would be lethal. Swann is a step in that direction! Ouch.

Guess again. We are making jokes since the Republican candidate is so pathetic.

The liberals said the same thing about a certain Mr. Ronald Wilson Reagan when he ran for Governor in 1967 :) Mr. Reagan didn't turn out to be that bad, did he?

Only scandal would defeat Rendell.

He was one of the worst presidents of all time.

It's sad that the Republicans would run someone for Governor just because he is African American and has fame as a football player..

It is sort of like the rest of their social issues, gays, (Jeff Gannon) race (remember Willy Horton) abortion (remember Arnold the Gropinator), crime (Bush II employs convicted felons pardoned by Dad, e.g. Elliot Abrams), adultery (Henry Hyde, Livingstone, Gingrich etc.)

Harp on the social issues when it works to confuse those they screw on economic issues, abandon them when it helps the GOP acquire power.

Meanwhile no inconsistency whatsoever on economic issues, tax breaks for the wealthy, service cuts, tution increases. The recent Texas GOP scheme to reduce property taxes and up sales taxes, in which families over $100k per year gain and those below lose is just another exampe of this conistency.

Reagan helped end the cold war, and he gave Americans reason to feel good about themselves again.

Reagan also sold WMDs to Saddam, sold arms to Iran to fund the Contras, and very nearly bankrupted this country.

Not one of the worst, but not one of the greatest either. Reagan is right in the middle of the Presidential pack to me.

Bush II is far worse to me than Reagan was.

High crimes and misdeanors, methinks.

Reagan also vetoed sanctions against S. Africa, and was against them. Luckily that veto faced the override from congress, and Apartheid ended despite Reagan's veto.

Reagan mined the harbors of Nicaragua despite a lack of hostile action from the Nicaraguans. He needlessly invaded Granada, costing the loss of innocent lives, and he refused the jurisdiction of the world court in the matter of Nicaragua. He appointed James Watt, as Sec. of the interior. Contrary to Watt's wishes we still have national protected lands today, and national parks today.

He's no W. Bush, but he was far from one of the greatest presidents of all time either.

I didn't even want to bring that up since Reagan as governor of Ca. was the original claim, and he was a decent governor, IMO. He was a much better governor than he was president.

Wow, Swann was chairman of the council for physical fitness. Holy ****sters, sign that guy up for President! I mean what other qualifications do you need to run the country, let alone a little state like Pennsylvania?

-A couple purple hearts
-A undistinguished congressional career
-A rich wife
-A lot of "plans"

Oops, that's what the other side thought! My bad.

Oops, that's what the other side thought! My bad. It's good to see that the conservatives support the troops... until they disagree with them.

Then it is ok to belittle the heroic military career of a veteran who volunteered to go into combat, saved the lives of other soldiers, and personally risked his own life serving his country.

Nothing like consistency.

oh oh oh oh my turn! my turn!

-An "honorable" discharge
-A coke habit
-An undistinguished run holding the weakest governorship in America
-A rich, powerful family

See, isn't petty politics fun? Haven't you and I just advanced the debate in this country even further? We deserve a medal or something.. unless it's a purple heart, cause those things don't mean ****.

Pardon me for asking this but does anyone know where Swann stands on issues and what his platform is going to be?

We now return you to scheduled partisanship..

Whats the partisanship? I dont know how my asking about his qualifications has anything to do with partisanship... ( Im saying this whether you were talking about me or not)

Swann has no qualifications to be the governor of an entire state. Maybe 1/3 of a retirement community, but not a state.

nope, he's a college football guy. On that note, I think the democrats should run Jill Arrington or Melissa Stark against him, in order to create a more "professional" vibe.
