Not much left. Ordonez if Beltran falls through would be an ok consolation prize, but there aren't any Cs or 2Bs or SPs that are worth chasing to help fill some holes.

Some veteran starting we could sign to a one year contract or minor league contract based on some success at some point of their career as backup plans.

Omar Daal
Shawn Estes
Odalis Perez (maybe a two year contract)
Andy Ashby (could be out Woody this year)
Ismael Valdez
Hideo Nomo
Pedro Astacio

Not much left indeed but Purpura could have his legacy or long term reputation riding on how he does this off-season fair or not. Beltran signing (which will likely lead to a Roger Clemens return) will ease much of the pain but time is running out. Spring training starts next month.

PS. I hope and pray Roger's mom [???] health improve.

Odalis signed with LA

What happened to Hideo? Was he injured last year?

I'd like to see us take a chance on Hideo Nomo or Pedro Astacio to fill Miller's spot.

Didn't we have Astacio for about 10 minutes?

yeah, until he got hurt. still a big injury risk. And I wouldn't really want Nomo's fat ERA in MMP. I'd be fine with Carlos/Redding mix over either of those guys..

Speaking honestly, if we miss out on Beltran (and Clemens), I'd be content just to hold off until next winter. The dumbest thing we could do is sign a FA this year to a bad contract just because we have the budget. I don't see anyone out there right now replacing Beltran or Clemens, so why bother?

I think Ordonez is definitely worth a contract. He's a legitimate big bat, and we could use the help in the OF. Only 30 years old.

Otherwise yea, I'd try to shore up the pen some and save our money til after the 05 season.

For relief pitchers I would look at Koch, Witasik, Williamson, Hammond, and Osuna and see if Chad Fox would sign a minor league deal seen as he is from the Houston area.

I agree also...Ordonez is the only big name I'd be willing to spend on really. Assuming his legs are all the way back, that guy is really damn good.

To BSW...Koch and Williamson are overrated. I'm not sure, but I thought I heard about Chad Fox signing somewhere? Maybe I'm wrong on that one though

I wouldn't even touch Koch.

There are rumors that the Cubs are quite hot on Ordonez, and there are rumors that Ordonez will not be healthy enough to play coming next May.

Really, if we don't get Beltran back we should just stay put and save the money for next winter. I wouldn't mind picking up another starting pitcher if he comes cheap, though.

Here is a list for 2006 potential free agents (http://fantasy.sportingnews.com/baseball/voices/brendan_roberts/) . There isn't too much there that really stands out. Preston Wilson or Juan Pierre would be nice in center. Other than that, I don't see much out there.

Hey, maybe Billy Wagner will want to come back and set up Lidge.

:D

Nomar signed a 1 year deal with the Cubbies, I wouldn't mind stealing a player from them in 06.

When you combine Alomar, Grud, and Eckstein, you'd have and extrodinarily average 2B. Nothing that should even worry the Brewers as far as losing ground to the Cards.

I know there's a Beltran thread, but this thread is the focus on other FAs that we can go after.

It's ridiculous to see us offering this guy $105 mil for his services.

Why don't we use that dough on someone else close to Beltran's talent and fix other areas of our team?

well this late in the offseason there really is not anyone to spend on now... i could see mag ordonez to play a corner spot but that is it. if we do not sign beltran i see drayton just saving the money and waiting til next offseason.
