Garner will swallow his stupid pills and bring in Micelli and Russ Springer to blow the game.

Braves bullpen is spent and Wright wasn't good the first game

:( I really wanted this one to end at home.

It would have been easier that way etc. Well....crap.

Let's win this thing tomorow! Time to make history!

9-3 Astros.

Braves have choked away the last two game 5's at their place... and Jaret Wright is no Maddux, Glavine, or Smoltz.

i'm not even going to bother to predict win or loss

have got hw, wasted too much time watching already.

yes I have temporarily taken over roll of board troll in the astros section but.... I'm not even watching the game until I know we're ahead by 12 runs so no trolling from me until much later tommorow.

Yea...I guess I'm going to stay at work and not catch the first several innings of this game. It's too much to watch or handle. I want us to win. But, this is shaping up to be not what I want. I think if it's close...then the bullpen will win or lose this game. Unfortunately, Atlanta's bullpen has proven to be superior to our bullpen. So, we have to hit and hit hard to win. If we get in a close game, then I think history will repeat itself. Damn this is killing me.

We may have another 3pm game because of that.

Hmmm... 4 of those 6 teams went onto play in or win the World series.

Astros - 7

Braves - 5

I don't think i can take another 1st round exit; put up or shutup

I don't think i can take another 1st round exit; put up or shutup Yeah we have to do something this year. Next season Kent is gone so that will be a huge dropoff on offense, Beltran may leave, and this might have been that last decent season Bagwell and Biggio might have so the future is not all that bright after the playoffs. We gotta win.

I want to say one thing, and I am sure anyone within the age range of 19-26 yrs old knows what it was like growing up watching the Astros. I used to play catcher throughout little leauge baseball, and I always wanted to be Craig Biggio. The regular season would go on, and then they would get to the playoffs and Biggio would choke, along with Bagwell. These two guys have been sports heros to many youth growing up in this city. What Biggio did today spooked me, made me feel so good. To see him sitting in the dugout, not being able to finish that game, I believe, cost us. WHO THE HELL PITCHES RUSS "I AM THE GREATEST" SPRINGER in the 9th inning. I understand they had no choice, but come on, warm up ROY O. Whatever, what I was getting at before being sidetracked is that this is the final time for Bags and Bigg to live up to the childhood hero status, and finally get over the hump. It is do or die time tommorow, not just for the season, but for our heroic dynamic duo. For once in our lives, I think the Gods of Baseball will be on our side. Good luck Stro's, this is it, make us proud!!

You can't pitch Roy tonight without a lead because you need him tomorrow. Even pitching him with the lead is very very risky.

I still have hope for Game 5. Oswalt looked good in game 2, and only threw 88 pitches. We looked good against Wright last time and their bullpen should be in bad shape. I also get the feeling Garner will not be pulling him after 88 pitches. There are no games left to save anyone for.

Man, I really feel for Biggio today. He finally breaks out of his slump and gets pulled without them even having the lead and has to watch this crap from the bench. I think he will play with some passion tomorrow.

The Astros this season have consistently been in this situation and found a way to come through. This whole season people have been calling them dead and they spring back to life. I can only think this trend will continue.

Well, the last two years have seen the Braves lose Game 5 in the NLDS in their yard. Odds say the Braves are likely to win one of these game 5 home games eventually.

But baseball is a cruel game. The Astros have a chance.

thacabbage
10-10-2004, 06:00 PM
Haven't felt such sudden shock and disappointment since Stockton in '97. '98, '99, '01, the Stros were thoroughly dominated and you saw the writing on the wall. Rockets have been a joke since then as well. Biggio goes deep and you're thinking, "they're really about to do this thing. I'm really watching the Houston Astros advance." And then it's just the sudden shock with the turn of events. What hurts most is that they've thoroughly dominated the Braves. Even Biggio and Bagwell are hitting!

I don't have a good feeling about tommorrow. Today was just deflating. And I don't know how a guy of Roy's slight stature will react to pitching on short rest.

I wish MLB could have given the Astros at least one prime time game. What the hell, two noon starts and two 3:00 starts? and if LA wins tonight, make that one more 3:00 start. I know, I know it's all about the ratings but come on, just give us one game in the evening.

To make things worse, down here in the big metropolis of Victoria, instead of watching the Texans between innings of the Astros game, our Fox station put on the cowboys.

BTW, Roy will pitch his ass off and we win 4-1.

well if we win ... It looks like Brandon Backe would have to start the next series on 3 days rest.

It sure would have been nice to start Roy in game 1 and Backe in game 2 on normal rest ... Thanks Phil ... Don't blow it in Atlanta!!!

If they started a Dodgers game at 12:00 Central, that would mean all the LA fans would need to get to Dodger Stadium for a 10:00 start local time. It just doesn't make sense to start a game between a Central and Eastern team before a Pacific and Central team.

Ratings also enter into it of course, as the Yankees and Red Sox will always be given priority over Houston and Atlanta. Ratings just aren't the only consideration.

If Houston was playing LA, they'd be getting all the prime-time games right now.

Its all about LA... both because they're on the west coast, and they give big ratings.

STL, Houston, and Atlanta are all relatively weak markets (especially STL).

I'm hoping the Cardinals are able to hold off the Dodgers becase the chances of rain for tomorrow's game increases with a later start. If the game starts late afternoon they should be able to get it in with no problem; the prime time start is a different story. A rain delay would allow Oswalt to start on 4 days rest; which under the circumstances would help significantely.

I have to imagine that if the threat rain is that serious later on, they'll arrange to start the game earlier then.

Remember... Fox does not want to have to have a game that competes with Red Sox-Yankees on Tuesday night. Hell... the way the sports world is looking at that matchup, that might as well be the freakin World Series.

It is only a 30% chance of rain which means it could be off and on ... They are going to do their damndest to get this game in.

rain delays are DEFINITELY in the favor of Atlanta as that puts much more emphasis on the bullpens. Roy couldn't handle more than one stoppage (if that) on 3 days rest.

I for one will hope for no rain delays

Right where they belong, in the dugout and not on the mound...you don't want to throw out munro because he's a average to mediocre starting pitcher who will almost for sure give up 3-4 runs whenever he pitches and as for hernandez, his arm strength was never good this season and an 88 mph fastball would be hit everytime if he pitched. Sending them out would be just as stupid as sending russ springer out...wait a minute..

I think if we win today, I think you start Backe in game 1. He didn't throw too many pitches and it seems like Garner only ever expects him to goo 5 or 6 innings anyway. You then throw Munro in Game 2. Hope he can keep you in the game. Then, throw Clemens on Game 3 (with travel days, etc, I would think this should be normal rest). Oswalt in Game 4 on normal rest. Backe in game 5 on normal rest now. Then Clemens and Oswalt on short rest in games 6/7 if needed.

After Roy O pitches today...what is your NLCS Rotation?

Wednesday - Munro
Thursday - Backe

Saturday - Clemens
Sunday - Oswalt
Monday - Backe with short leash, Munro ready to come in at the first sign of trouble.

Wednesday - Clemens
Thursday - Oswalt

I don't think Backe could go on 3 days rest...considering he rarely goes past the 5th-6th inning, and I believe he's always been a reliever, not a starter. It'd take him longer to recover, and I wouldn't want him out there on 3 days rest. So Peter "Pedro" Munro could possibly get 2 starts in the series.

Clemens on Saturday on normal rest, Oswalt on Sunday on normal rest. Backe could go Monday, with Munro ready to come in if anything happens. Clemens on Wednesday on 3 days, Oswalt on 3 days on Thursday.

What would you do?

``We overcame a fluke five-run rally,'' said Atlanta's Chipper Jones, who went 2-for-4 after opening the series 0-for-11. ``You're just thinking to yourself right there that there is no way we're going to end our season on that note.''

Why exactly was that inning a fluke? Just because Biggio hit a postseason homer or because Chipper Jones is a jackass?

``Streaks are streaks, they've got to come to an end some time,'' Atlanta manager Bobby Cox said.

Damn straight! Just like the 0/7 postseason series streak the Astros have

Here are my predictions:

1.) If Roy doesn't go at least 7 innings, then I think we lose this game.

2.) If we get into another pissing contest between our middle relief and their middle relief, then I think we lose this game. This obviously is tied to #1 above.

3.) If the Astros don't score more than 2 runs, then I think we lose this game.

4.) If Qualls or Miceli pitches, then I think we lose this game.

5.) If Roy goes 7 with us having the lead and Lidge comes in to wrap it up, then we win this game.

6.) If Oswalt is hit hard or leaves with us in a deficit, then I think we lose this game.

7.) If we score more than 6 runs, then we win this game regardless.

Those are my criteria for a successful Astros game. Make it so or I'll be damned.

I watched most of the 1980 series, including all of Game 5, as a senior in high school, believing all the home town stars were the greatest players ever....

I watched some of the 1981 series, I was in college then, and had other things on my mind....

I watched every pitch of every inning of every game of the 1986 series as a true fan would, even as my wife of one week waited for me....

I watched most of the 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001 series (I still hate Kevin Brown and Walt Weiss)....

I've watched all of this year's series...the feelings never change. I'm a nervous wreck right now. But I believe this is the year.....

I think #7 is especially important, with this damned braves offense (as ****ty as some of their hitters have been hitting) you do NOT want to try to win a "close" game which falls under the category of a lead 4 runs or less.

We've got to try to take wright out of the game early and often.

yeah, me too. I was too upset to be pissed off. I was at a loss of words. One of my friends showed up during the final inning. I couldn't say anything about the game..... I just turned it off as soon as I saw Kent hit the ball into a DP.

I really thought our luck was about to change. Men at the corners and Everette at 3rd. but no.....the worst thing that could happen happened.

I was thinking today, the last time a Houston sports team won a deciding game was Game 7, Rockets vs. Seattle in 1997. Agreed... but we shouldn't be panicking over this... we got quite used to it in the 90's.

1995 Rockets vs. Suns game 7
1995 Rockets vs. Jazz game 5
1994 Rockets vs. Knicks game 7
1994 Rockets vs. Suns game 7

I don't count that game 5 against the Jazz, because Barkley had gotten hurt in game 4 (which led to 6 quarters of doom), and most people knew that the Jazz were just too good to take down without what many people said was the "heart and soul" of this team.

Good morning. In less than an hour, fans from here will join others from around the world. And you will be launching the largest fanatic battle in this history of mankind.

Mankind -- that word should have new meaning for all of us today.

We can't be consumed by our petty differences anymore.

We will be united in our common interests.

Perhaps its fate that today is the 11th of October; and you will once again be fighting for the life of our team, not by getting a new team, as was the case in 1960, when Judge Roy Hofheinz, promised National League officials the team would receive a Domed stadium. Not from oppression, or persecution -- but from playoff elimination

We're fighting for our right to live, to exist.

And should we win the day, the 11th of October will no longer be known as the birth of our Houston Astros, but as the day when the world declared in one voice:

"We will not go quietly into the night.

We will not vanish without a fight.

We're going to live on.

We're going to survive."

Today, we celebrate our OUR NLDS VICTORY!

I'm kind of pissed this game is on FOX, considering that the FOX reception in College Station is crap.

Atleast the local radio station is picking up the game.

I will listen to the radio for audio, and then watch it on my pc.

You know that this is the REAL World Series for Fox... especially since the actual World Series would have either the Cardinals or the Astros in it, and those would be ratings nightmares (especially with St. Louis, even though it would be pretty damn good matchups)

No one couldn't really make that throw cause of the way he would have to throw against his body and momentum.

Thomas may be able to track down any fly ball but he has the arm of a girl.

i dont think thats true...was pretty shallow hit and this is supposively the best outfield in the league?!?!

This early lead is what we need for more confidence and to settle Oswalt down and just take care of the Braves.

That ball is nearly off the wall in MMP... its a big ballpark down there in Atlanta.

But... on the Fox "insync" replay... they showed Kent leaving 3rd well before the ball was in Thomas' glove. I just assumed that the videos were off on their times, but it would be funny if it was true and the Braves didn't appeal.

If you have played baseball you understand. Plus this is Thomas out there who doesn't have the best arm. He is basically running to left at full speed to get the line out that was hit to him then stop his momentum to throw back to his right to get it home. No one could really make a good throw in that situation.
