WGN said it still had 2 more games on their station during the last game. So I would think this one would be on their channel.

& i wouldnt worry about the Giants to much because Gagne and the Dodgers are pumped. I saw this on www.mlb.com and here the link for the artical http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_perspectives.jsp?ymd=20041001&content_id=877583&vkey=perspectives&fext=.jsp. "I want them to see us clinch," Gagne said of the Giants, who arrive Friday for a season-ending series. "The good thing is they're going to see us clinch against them. It's going to be amazing and a lot of fun, especially for the fans. They'll be able to see us do it against the hated Giants."

More meyhem in cubbieland, as expected.

Steve Stone get in some quality shots:

Cubs broadcaster Steve Stone lambasted the Cubs in an interview with WGN-AM radio after Thursday's 12-inning loss, painting the club as chronic complainers.

Stone told interviewers David Kaplan and Tom Waddle that the Cubs reminded him of a Jack Nicholson line from the film, "A Few Good Men."

"You want the truth? You can't handle the truth," Stone said. "Let me tell you something, guys, the truth of this situation is [this is] an extremely talented bunch of guys who want to look at all directions except where they should really look, and kind of make excuses for what happened.

"At the end of the day, boys, you don't tell me how rough the water is, you bring in the ship. The best eight [teams] go on, the other teams go home. This team should have won the wild-card [playoff berth] by six, seven games. No doubt about it. They have the talent to do that. They're life-and-death right now."

Stone said the "defining moment" of the Cubs' collapse was their 15-7 loss to Houston on Aug. 27 at Wrigley Field when they could have extended their wild-card lead over the Astros to eight games. That game featured a confrontation between Michael Barrett and Roy Oswalt. It also included the press box phone call from Kent Mercker to complain about Stone and Chip Caray and Mercker's taunting of umpire C.B. Bucknor that netted him a suspension.

"The one game that defined this season, that allowed a team that was dead to get back in was one of the days that started a lot of problems for my partner and I, one of the best partners in the game," Stone said. "That is the Roy Oswalt game, when Kent Mercker hit him in the sixth inning. That illuminated the Houston Astros.

"They were left for dead. The Cubs beat them the first game in a three-game series, they knocked Kerry Wood out in the fifth inning, they hit four home runs [off Wood], Oswalt pitched eight innings on a day the heat factor being 95 degrees. They won 15-7, took the next two games against the Cubs.

"Instead of being buried, they got back in the race. And guess what? They're up by one game now. The Cubs had a chance to put their foot on their throat, and good teams do that. When you have a chance to eliminate a team, you don't take a personal vendetta out until that team is dead. Kill them, then you have plenty of time for personal vendettas. The Cubs didn't do that and it's coming back to haunt them."

Stone also predicted the Cubs would make some "blockbuster" moves this off-season, implying some trades would be directly tied to the team's ongoing battles with the broadcasters.

http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-040930cubsstone,1,3811686.story?coll=cs-home-headlines

And there's good ol' cubbiehater Jay "What we have here is a choke in progress" Mariotti in the Sun-Times:

As fast as his cane would allow, Ron Santo limped out of the booth and went home. The fans removed their rally caps, the front office cranked up the shredder for those embarrassing playoff-ticket leaflets, and America once again purged the romantic notion that two tortured franchises could play this autumn in a World Series.

In the most agonizing meltdown yet of a Cubbie lifetime, welcome to 1969 + 1984 + 2003. Who needs Steve Bartman when a so-called leadoff hitter can't lay down a critical bunt, when a two-time batting champion bunts instead of swinging away, when 22 runners are stranded over two games, when the Cubs manage one run and seven hits in a dozen innings on a day when Mark Prior rediscovers his greatness and whiffs 16 batters? There's only one thing left to say when a club with a $100 million payroll and monstrous expectations drops three straight to the also-ran Reds after losing twice to the also-ran New York Mets and three times in previous weeks to the soon-to-be Washington Generals.

The Cubs don't deserve to make the playoffs. They are flawed, dysfunctional and unworthy of October. They can't execute fundamentals, can't win one-run games and really don't know how to play ball. A billy goat is laughing his tail off.

''I think we all know where we're at right now,'' Prior said.

On life support, if not dead.

Unless he wants to write and direct ''Cursebusters,'' Harold Ramis can please stop singing ''Take Me Out to the Ball Game.'' The tragic number at Wrigley Field is one, meaning the Cubs must sweep the playoff-bound Atlanta Braves while hoping the wild-card-leading Houston Astros lose once at home -- where they have won 15 straight -- against the terrible Colorado Rockies. And even if that unlikely scenario develops, the possibility then exists the Cubs would face Roger Clemens in a play-in game. In other words, organist Gary Pressy could have played ''Taps'' on Thursday after 3 hours and 26 minutes of futility concluded with a crushing 2-1 loss, which capped a maddening six months of hell that cost Cubbie diehards their fingernails, their livers and considerable chunks of their already battered hearts.

You couldn't help but laugh when an elderly lady held a sign that said, ''Steve Stone For Manager.'' While Dusty Baker isn't responsible for personnel decisions that included the signing of LaTroy Hawkins and the glaring absence of table-setters atop the batting order, he is accountable for not coaxing his men to play smarter baseball. This might be the dumbest high-profile club I've ever watched. And how appropriate to see so many idiotic tendencies converge on the most important day of the year, when it became apparent early that a lineup of acclaimed hitters would respond like choking dogs while Prior dazzled. Take the fourth, for instance, when the Cubs had runners on first and second with none out. Don't you try a bunt there, Dusty? Nope. Todd Walker swung away and popped out, as did Derrek Lee.

It was an omen of stupidity to come. No major-league team in the last 30 years has been more dependent on homers for run production than the Cubs, who lead the National League in longballs but rank 11th in on-base percentage and 14th in walks. The convoluted disparity was in full, stinking bloom on this day, when the Cubs waited for a home run, got a solo shot from Strugglin' Sammy Sosa in the sixth, then didn't score again against the ordinary likes of Aaron Harang, John Riedling, Gabe White, Jose Acevedo and Juan Padilla. A season of inefficiency came to a head in the 12th, when Jose Macias led off with a single and, of course, didn't score.

He didn't because Corey Patterson can't bunt. If Kenny Lofton was the September team MVP last year, Patterson is a Least Valuable Player candidate down this stretch. Continuing to fancy himself as a five-tool player and No. 3 hitter, he has driven Baker crazy with his strikeouts and free-swinging ways. If nothing else, he should have been able to bunt Macias to second. But he failed twice -- and was hammered by boos. The only thing more aggravating than his technical flaw was his blase attitude afterward. Was he upset with himself?

''Maybe at times, you can kick yourself or whatever. But it's over with,'' Patterson said nonchalantly. ''You can't dwell on it. You move on from there and get ready to play tomorrow.''

Even when there is no tomorrow. After Patterson whiffed to more boos, up to the plate came Nomar Garciaparra, who was acquired because of his slashing line drives and power. With one out, Garciaparra should have been swinging, not worrying about grounding into a double play. No one gave him the bunt sign, obviously, yet strangely, he decided to bunt anyway, successfully moving Macias to second base but reducing the Cubs' margin of error to one out. Please explain, superstar.

''The guy was playing back,'' Garciaparra said of third baseman Felipe Lopez. ''We needed baserunners at the time, especially with the guys coming up behind me. In the worst-case scenario, we do get a guy in scoring position. He made a great play.''

Someone asked him if he was trying to be cute. Translation: Why would an offensive force who once hit .372, who had 35 home runs and 122 RBI in a single season, choose this strange moment to move over a runner? Suddenly, Garciaparra was having a Boston flashback. The media were badgering him. Did it ever occur to him that he's The Curse, the link between the Red Sox and Cubs?

''I don't know why that would be cute,'' he said of the sacrifice. ''Did you expect me to bunt? I thought it was a great idea to put a guy in scoring position. I don't think anything was shocking there. It doesn't matter what kind of hitter I am in that situation. It matters what kind of team you have.''

The Cubs are not much of a team, as we learned many months ago. They are choke artists and babies, with one of the biggest whiners, Moises Alou, fittingly ending this latest dark episode in franchise infamy with a lazy fly out. ''We work on [bunting] all the time,'' an exhausted Baker said. ''We just came up short today.''

And Garciaparra's decision? ''He did that on his own,'' Baker confirmed.

It was noble, if pathetic, to hear Prior try to blame himself. ''One run should have been enough with the stuff I had today,'' he said. ''I gave up one too many.'' No, the problem is much bigger, something to do with the uniform he wears. Never, ever forget a perpetual fact of sporting life.

The Cubs always will be the Cubs. This year's slogan: Where there are hopes, there are dopes

It all depends on which Carey you like listening to...

Skip (the dad)... or Chip (the son)

Both have perfceted the art of being a "homer" (must be hereditary)... although Skip tends to be more tolerable because he doesn't blow out your ear-drums whenever Sammy does his little bunny-hop.

Live play-by-play of the Cubs-Braves game. Refresh for the latest agony.

By Adam Caldarelli
ChicagoSports.com

October 1, 2004, 3:34 PM CDT

With three games left on the schedule for all involved, it's come to this: The Cubs' inability to put away lesser competition (the Mets and Reds) has them scrambling to eke into the playoffs in a season when most knowledgeable seam-head types predicted them to win it all.

It could still happen, but they've got to get there first.

To get you caught up on the wild-card standings and remaining schedule, the Cubs trail Houston and San Francisco by a game. The Astros play host to Colorado this evening, while the Giants play the Dodgers at Chavez Ravine late tonight.

But first we have a pretty decent pitching match-up on our hands with Kerry Wood (8-8) going against Atlanta Braves lefty Mike Hampton (12-9).

The Braves, who would be the Cubs' first-round opponent if they make the playoffs (big if), can get a little early revenge for last year, when the Cubs dismissed them from the post-season. For those of you that have been watching recently, this Cubs team is vastly different than last year's.

It's a beautiful day outside. The sun is shining, the Cubs are whining ... ah ... baseball the way it shouldn't be played.

Kent Mercker just called. He wants me banned from Tribune picnic.

For those of you joining us for the first time, first I say welcome and then I say, this is how this works: Refresh the page for the latest. And if you've got something to say, please don't hesitate when it comes to ranting, venting, complaining, complimenting, chatting even, on the adjacent message board.

We'll have baseball soon. Sit tight.

Steve Stone update: Radio reports reports of Stone's firing are wrong. He's on the call.

In case you missed it, Stone went on WGN radio yesterday and said what every Cubs fan was thinking.

First inning

OK, here we go everyone. Got the Advil and something to throw handy? Wood faces shortstop Rafael Furcal to get things started. I stand corrected. The sun is no longer shining. As for the Cubs whining, well, that still stands. The wind is blowing out. Wood jumps all over Furcal with two straight strikes before Furcal shatters his bat with a bloop to Corey Patterson in center for the first out. Twenty-six outs away from the no-hitter. Marcus Giles, whom Mark Prior took out last season between first and second, breaks up the no-no with a line drive to left. Here's no one's favorite, J.D. Drew. Giles breaks for second, Drew drills it to Mark Grudzielanek with enough time to turn the 4-6-3, but Grudzielanek boots it and everyone's safe. Chipper Jones grounds the first pitch to Aramis Ramirez at third. He steps on third but can't get Jones at first. First and second and two outs for one of the better names in baseball, Johnny Estrada. Hey, Rick Majerus at the game. Looks like he's enjoying a dog. Big shocker. Estrada lifts one to Patterson and Wood pitches out of a minor jam.

Patterson just rips one but it's right at Drew in right. Derrek Lee rolls one to Jones at third. Two quick outs. Lee is ending the season like he started it: ice cold. Chip Caray still going with the no-one-wants-to-face-the-Cubs-in-a-short-series line. I would think everyone would want to face this team right now in any type of series. Just ask the Mets and Reds. Aramis Ramirez does a very rare thing and strikes out.

Second inning

First baseman Adam LaRoche leads off for the Braves. Hey, there's Cubs fan Bob Beck on TV. He's got his headphones under his baseball cap. Interesting look. LaRoche hits one to center and Patterson plays an out into a single with a late jump coming in. Andruw Jones (batting seventh?) gets jammed and meekly grounds one down the line to Lee, who steps on first. LaRoche takes second. Dewayne Wise, the No. 8 hitter filling in for Charles Thomas, belts one into the junipers in center and the Braves take a 2-0 lead. Hampton files out to Moises Alou in left. Stone just uttered the term faits accomplis. There's no room for that baseball, especially now that Les Expos fled Montreal.

Braves 2, Cubs 0

Alou leads off the Cubs' second with a single to left. Nomar Garciaparra lines to Drew in right, to bring up Sammy Sosa with a man on. Sosa draws a walk. Grudzielanek, hitting .405 lifetime against Hampton, is a good guy to have up in this spot. Grudzielanek rips a single up the middle, scoring Alou. Sosa takes third. Barrett, one of yesterday's goats, will try to make amends here. Barrett grounds one to Hampton, who slips, takes a seat, recovers and throws out Barrett. Sosa stays put, but Grudzielanek takes second. Hampton gets Wood looking at strike three on a pitch that looked outside. Wood does the smart thing by not arguing the call. I'd like to see that from the Southwest Airlines Plane View over-head cam. Instead we get a Southwest commercial.

Braves 2, Cubs 1

Third inning

Giles lines one into the right-field corner and hustles all the way around to third. We missed the actual hit because WGN was singing the praises of Miller Lite. Lead-off triples are never good. The Cubs will concede the run with everyone back. Drew pops one to Nomar behind second. Not nearly deep enough to score Giles. Now Chipper pops up the first pitch. Two great pitches by Wood. He looks a little angry and then blows Estrada away with a high fastball. So much for the lead-off triple.

Patterson fails to do the job of the lead-off hitter and grounds out to first. Lee draws a walk, which is good because Ramirez sure can hit with guys on base. Not this time. Ramirez grounds to second. Giles flip to Furcal, but Furcal's throw to first is high and Ramirez is safe. Good play by Lee to go in hard at second. Alou quickly puts an end to this one with a ground ball to third.

Fourth inning

Wow. A ton of comments on the message board. At least they're all positive. Breathe, people. Adam Lyndon LaRoche gets his second straight hit off Wood and another lead off guy on. Jones, Andruw that is, pops out. Wise follows with a pop to Nomar. Hampton works the count full before putting a high fastball in the bleachers. Egads. Furcal grounds out to end it but not before the pitcher homers.

Braves 4, Cubs 1

I hear the faint wail of a bugle in the distance. It's playing Taps. Nomar fans to start things off. To make matters worse they just showed a shot of Antonio Alfonseca in the Braves dugout. What, no shots of Dave Veres or Mark Guthrie on hand? Sosa walks. Grudzielanek pokes a single to right. Sosa doesn't even consider running on Drew. Barrett quickly ends any threat by bouncing into a double play.

You know, maybe it's not the goat - maybe it's because the Cubs are a bunch of whiny, unlikeable bat-corkers and hand-pissers with a head-hunter and a whiny bitch at the top of their rotation. Man, all they need is Derek Bell and Marge Schott and they'd be set.

cubsclapp: Stoney summarized everything perfectly. I can't find one thing that I appreciate about this team. Last year, I think that most Cubs fans had a more disappointed or sad feeling. Now, there is no reason to be anything but pissed off at these players. I say "players" because they are anything but a "team". I have never seen so much selfish baseball, such little execution, and such whining on any baseball team before. I really liked Dusty coming into this year, but he has to take as much blame as anybody. However you put it, this season was a complete embarrassment and there need to be some significant moves made in the offseason. To the 2004 Chicago Cubs: Eat ****e.

Indeed - they think he might be back for the NLCS, if the Cards make it - but I would personally doubt that. This hurts their rotation, but the rotation wasn't going to be their strength anyway - so I think they still make it out of the first round even w/o Carpenter - especially since neither of their prospective opponents has a dominant pitcher that can really hurt them.

While I too think the Cubs are done, let's not celebrate too prematurely. If the Astros lose tonight (which hopefully they won't), the Cubs will still only be one back. If they somehow win out against the Braves (who will have nothing left to play for) and we lost one of the last two they would be tied with us.

All that being said, I don't think it will happen (the Cubs seem like a defeated team), but we still have to take care of our business and hope SF loses another one.

OK check this scenario out ...

Astros win out with Oswalt and Clemens taking care of business

Giants sweep the Dodgers so we all end 92-70. From what I've pasted below it looks like the Giants and Dodgers play a one game playoff and we automatically get the Wild Card since the losing team will now have a worse record than us. Am I reading this wrong, or is this really the case?

I just get the feeling that Giants are not going to lose to the Dodgers ...

http://www.all-baseball.com/ref/tie.html

When there is a tie for a Division Championship and the tied teams have the same record as a team having the better record of the second place teams in the other two divisions, the Division Championship tie shall be broken as follows:

a. Tie among two teams for Division Championship with one team having the better record of the second place teams in the other two divisions. The League President shall conduct a coin flip to determine the site of a playoff game between the two teams tied for the Division Championship, the game to be played the day after the conclusion of the championship series. The winner of the game shall be declared Division Champion and the team with the better record of the second place teams in the other two divisions shall be declared the Wild Card team.

no, if the Giants and Dodgers end up tied, they have a 1 game playoff to decide the West. This doesn't count against the loser, who then would play the Astros for the WC.

If it's the Giants, the Astros go to SF for the game. If it's the Dodgers, MLB will do a coin flip (they didn't do one for this situation when they did the others)

Check this out for full explanation (http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/mlb/news/mlb_news.jsp?ymd=20040915&content_id=859158&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp)

Yes... this is the right outcome if that circumstance were to happen.

If they went by the old rule (the loss knocks the other team out of the wild card race), that would be pretty awful...

The more important thing, is if its a 3 way tie... the Astros will have an "extra" day of rest to allow the first game to be played, thus helping them adjust the pitching lineup even better. (although, if its Clemens on Sunday, they won't have many options on Tuesday).

IN the link you provided I still found this

To me it just sounds like the 2 teams tied for the division get a playoff game while the other team waltz's in.

Am I looking at the wrong rule? .. I am looking at Rule 4-a

This is the first thing in the article:

What happens if the Dodgers, Giants and Astros all finish the season with the same record, leaving the NL West and the NL Wild Card winners undecided?

The Dodgers and Giants would have a one-game playoff in San Francisco to determine the West champion on Monday at 4:05 p.m. ET. The loser would play the Astros in a one-game playoff to determine the Wild Card winner on Tuesday. If the NL West runner-up is the Giants, the game would be played in San Francisco. If the NL West runner-up is the Dodgers, a coin flip will determine which team plays at home.

A Giants sweep this weekend over the Dodgers, combined with an Astros loss would give San Francisco the NL West title based on a 10-9 season record against Los Angeles. The Dodgers would be the Wild Card team in this scenario.

honestly tho, is the rule printed in the rulebook, because I seriously think the commisioner just makes this stuff up as he goes along. I'm not kidding either. Is it actually printed somewhere. I almost think the league doesn't print it so as to keep their options open is case something weird is about to happen that they will need to remedy.

I just think having to depend on Jeff Weaver for anything sucks.

"On paper, we're much better than the Astros, than the Giants," Todd Walker said. "It's just incredibly unbelievable with the team we have to lose six out of seven. I've never seen anything like it. It's just a freak deal. This whole year has been a freak deal."

The Dodgers are doing their best Cubs imitiation.

Looks like the Stros gotta do it by themselves..

I knew we couldn't depend on a team that relies so much on Jose Lima.

rally cap on. The Giants have no bullpen. There is still hope.

I just tried to figure out the rotations for possible playoff, But I"m lost. Every web site has different probables. I guess a lot depends on when Perez from LA pitches. Hopefully it's against the Giants soon!

Also, wasn't Hermanson supposed to be suspended for hitting Kent. For 3 games. How is he allowed to pitch? The dude is bringing his $800,000 dollar salary onto the mound.

No he appealed the suspension and MLB said they would not hear his appeal until after the season so he will serve the suspension to start next season. Sounds like BS to me.

Thank god for the appeal. Woo hoo! Hermanson is the man.
