The last post in the last Scoreboard thread said that our magic number is 3 for a tie breaker and 4 to clinch outright.
I just wanted to point out that that applies to both the Giants and the Cubs. If we win the next two, the Cubs lose the next two and the Giants win 1 and lose 1, we've clinched against the Cubs but not the Giants.

I'll have to admit I am very impressed with the Astros turn around. But I'll also have to admit I'd rather see the Cubs or Giants win it all.

The nice thing is that no matter what happens today, the worst the Astros could be is tied for 1st.
GO PADRES!
GO REDS!
Screw the Cubs and the Giants. I hope the closest Barry Bonds comes to a World Series trophy is the ones that his father was a part of.

So if the Cubs, Stros and Giants win out, and the Dodgers win today, then all 4 teams would have a 92-70 record. I'd prefer the Stros win out and everyone loses, but 4 teams at 92-70 would be pretty cool.

I think the West would be decided by the Dodgers/Giants head to head record.
None of this will matter, because the Cubs and Giants are going to lose again. In fact, the Cubs are gonna lose this afternoon. Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Not if other teams are tied with them.
If its a three-way or four-way tie... the Dodgers and Giants would have to play one game for the division... then, the losing team would drop into the wild-card formula just as if it was a 2-way or 3-way tie.

Head-to-Head records are only used when both teams are assured of making the playoffs. If there is any possibility of a team being eliminated then they go to one game playoffs.

In case of 4 way tie (from mlb.com)
What if four contenders in a league finish with the same winning percentage? Let's say the Dodgers, Giants, Cubs and Astros all finish with the same record.
In that scenario, Los Angeles and San Francisco would first play a one-game playoff to determine the NL West champion. Then the losing team would join Chicago and Houston in the three-team playoff tiebreaker. This would all take place between Monday and Wednesday, pushing back the start of the NLDS.

As far as the pitching matchups go, it looks good for the Padres. Jerome Williams hasn't pitched since July 30. Hopefully Harang can pitch at least keep the Reds in the game. If it gets to the Cubs bullpen, things will be looking up.

Honestly, what the hell is wrong with all the Cubs hitters? My God, they're making the Reds pitching stiffs look like all-stars out there. Their hitters are doing their best impersonation of our hitters back in June/July. Not that I'm complaining, mind you. At least it's nice to know we aren't the only team to have almost every single hitter hit around the Mendoza line for long stretches.

The Cubs are stupid. Why even pitch to Kearns? He's the only one on the Reds doing anything at all. The rest of the team is terrible. So, why wouldn't you just walk Kearns every time instead of letting him beat you?

The Curse of the Goat
According to Clark Maxfield, the name comes from a locally-famous curse: Sam Gianis, owner of the Billygoat Tap, which was inspiration for John Belushi's "cheesborger, cheeseborger" routine, tried to bring a billygoat to a Chicago Cubs game in the '40's.
When he was kicked out unceremoniously, he cursed the Cubs, saying that they'd never win the pennant again until a billygoat sat in Wrigley Field....and for 50+ years, they have not.

I love it -- not only are they losing, but they're losing painful extra inning games. (Plus the frustration of wasting an absolute gem by Prior.)
Nothing like chasing the Cubs for a playoff spot! Is there any other team you'd rather be chasing when you need them to meltdown in order to squeak into the playoffs?
Now, go Padres!

This is crazy! We need one more loss from the Giants and we need to win out! Then we can win it out right! Who ever woulda thought the Scrubs would lose 2-3 to NYM and 3-4 at home to the Reds! Lets take this thing astros! I'm not at all looking past the Rockies! They're a big reason we're in this thing because they beat the Giants a couple times for us and last night they beat the Dodgers in extra innings, so If I'm Houston and Phil Garner I'm not lettin up or resting anybody against the Rockies. Man this off day is huuuuge also!

The mediots in Chicago will have a field day with this one. Can't wait to read the Trib & Sun-Times tomorrow.
http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/cubs/cs-040927knowlesredeye,1,474045.story?coll=cs-home-headlines
When Dusty Baker came to town a couple of years ago, he said he wanted the Cubs to shed their image as lovable losers.
Congratulations, Dusty.
The Cubs are no longer losers, and they're about as lovable as the Taliban.
This year's Cubs team has been a defiantly fan-unfriendly bunch. When they're not on the disabled list or being suspended by the league for misbehavior, Cubs players circa 2004 are calling the TV announcers to complain about the play-by-play commentary or getting doubled off second base for the third time in a week....
Sammy Sosa's home-run hop has quickly gone from endearing to annoying, especially when he does it prematurely and turns a sure double into an embarrassing 9-4-6 putout at second. It may have been cute when he was hitting 60 homers for a noncontending team, but when he's batting .260 in a pennant race ... it's time to put a cork in it, Sammy.
Fundamentals don't seem to matter to Baker and his players. Moises Alou has committed a career's worth of base-running blunders this season, most of which Baker has shrugged off as "aggressive" mistakes. No, Dusty. "Aggressive" base running is going from first to third on a single. Getting doubled off base on a routine fly ball-even in a hit-and-run situation-is not aggressive. It's just plain stupid.
Speaking of stupid, have you ever seen a team create more animosity with umpires than this year's Cubs? Baker and four of his pitchers -- Kerry Wood, Carlos Zambrano, LaTroy Hawkins and Kent Mercker -- all served time on the suspended list this season for various altercations with authority. These days, no game seems complete until a frothing- at-the-mouth Cub is forcibly removed from the field....
I want to like these Cubs, I really do. They could be the team that saves me and countless other fans from going to our graves without seeing a Chicago baseball team win a championship.
But perhaps this is our destiny (Dustiny?), the way fate meant it to be. We'll get our World Series title, but we'll get it from this whiny, unlovable collection of complainers.
After all, fate has been as cruel to us before.
Let the meltdown begin!!!

I saw that. And one of the guys on Around the Horn kept insisting that, not only would the Stros not make the playoffs, but that the there would be a playoff for the Wild Card between the Cubs and Giants.
One of the reason I'm enjoying seeing the cubs self-immolate is all the fawning the media gave them last year, this preseason, and during this season.
And still tools like Jeff Brantley won't shut up about the damn Cubs.

Nope, it was a debate between him and Tim Kurkjian on the set of Sportscenter. Timmy said the Astros would clinch on Sunday and Roger would win the Cy Young.
Brantley responded by saying the Cubs would win the Wild Card and that Clemens would get to watch the playoffs from home with his kids "like he wants to."

My apologies to Dusty then.
Well see if Nomar gets any heat for that.
That tribune article was priceless.
Honestly... I never thought the Cubs would become downright hated... but there are even lifelong cubs fans who are starting to just dislike a lot of the players on this team, and Dusty especially.
He's turned it into an "us against the world," thing... which actually can help a ballclub unite and come together sometimes, but has turned the Cubs into the exact opposite of what they've been for much of their livelihood.
People around the country now hate guys like Moises Alou and Kerry Wood... perceiving them as arrogant, whiny, hot-headed and immature ballplayers. Keep in mind, that these two were much beloved before Dusty got anywhere near the ballclub.
They've also turned Latroy (or as some people like to say... Latoya) Hawkins into their own personal scapegoat, by Dusty's refusal to aknowledge that he just isn't a closer. By the time he blew his 6th save, they should have started trying something else... now, by his 9th blown save, its too late.
All Dusty can say is... "looks like he's got the 2 out 2 strikes blues..."
I'm pretty impartial normally when it comes to other teams demises... but when this many cubs fans rise up in anger over their manager (when was the last time Cubs fans rose up in anger over anything)... you know there's some serious turmoil.
I just hope Drayton keeps Garner around... he's got the best of both worlds: A player's manager who is not afraid to but heads... and a strategist who actually knows that fundamentals are important, and you must make adjustments constantly game by game.

My favorite Dusty moment of the year came after LA's Alex Cora, on the 18th pitch of an at-bat in which he fouled off 13 straight Matt Clement pitches, hit a 2-run homer to ice the game (a 4-0 cubbie loss):
"He kind of spoiled it a little at the end by flipping the bat. He won the battle already so you don't rub it in. But that's modern stuff, I guess.''
Wonder how that ridiculous f*ing hypocrite feels about Sammy the Clown's little-bunny-frou-frou routine...

If the Dogers lose tonight and Giants win. We have a great shot. Let's pretend the cubs are done just for the hell of it.
If Giants Sweep the Dodgers:
Astros must win two games to tie the Dogers: doable
If the Giants win 2 games:
Astros must win 2 games to tie the Giants: doable
If the Giants win 1 game:
Astros must win 1 game to tie the Giants: Doable
If the Giants win 0 games:
The Astros must win 1 game to get in or 0 to tie: Doable.
Tomorrow's pitching matchups seem to favor Hampton and the Braves, the Giants, and the Rockies.
So, the way the last 50 games or so have gone that means only the Astros win of the NL three?

Well, now that the Giants and Dodgers won, I like our chances that much better. The Giants are still mathimatically alive for the division, so now the two teams can beat up on each other over the weekend to allow the 'Stros to slip in.

So what is the best case scenario for the Astros? Obviously the Cubs lose, but this Giants/Dodgers battle for 1st, and then the other team goes into the wild card battle, is kind of confusing. I just want to know who to root for, the Giants or Dodgers? Maybe it doesn't matter right now because they're records are so even. I guess we really won't know until the second game of the series?

Put it this way, ignoring the cubs for now, If the Dodgers sweep the Giants, the worst the Astros will do is tie for the WC with the Giants- and that's if the Astros get swept by the Rockies.
If the Giants sweep the Dodgers (putting them both at 92-70), the Astros will have to sweep the Rockies (to also get to 92-70), and even then, there will be a one-game playoff between the Astros and either the Dodgers or the Giants to see who gets the WC.
In a more realistic thought, if the Dodgers win at least one game against the Giants, the Astros completely control their destiny (as in win out, and they're the WC winner). Regardless of what happens with the Cubs.
in other words, GO DODGERS!
but ignoring all that, if the Astros sweep the Rockies, the worst they can do is a one-game playoff with either the Giants or Dodgers.

From mlb.com on what happens if the Dodgers get swept by the Giants and the Astros sweep the Rockies...
The Dodgers, Giants and Astros finish with the same winning percentage, leaving the NL West and the NL Wild Card winners undecided. What happens?
The Dodgers and Giants would have a one-game playoff to determine the West champion on Monday. The loser would play the Astros in a one-game playoff to determine the Wild Card winner on Tuesday. If that scenario plays out, both National League Division Series would begin on Wednesday. Under normal circumstances (no Tuesday tiebreaker), three Division Series will begin on Tuesday. The only exception is the series involving the NL Wild Card.

Right. We have to root for the Dodgers at this point.
I think it's realistic that the Astros go at least 2-1. If the Giants go 2-1 then we tie the Giants and force a one game playoff. If I was a gambling man. I would bet that we end up in a 1 game playoff.
