No mention of type of 4th yr option (player vs team)
Competing for starting PG spot, nothing guaranteed to him.
Blah, blah... great team, good home, wants to win championship.

Interesting, 3 year deal eh? I wonder for how much? I think the Rockets look at Sura not so much as a PG replacement but as a DUAL role player. Someone that can come in and play some PG but also some backup 2 guard as well. I think he will take Pike's place. Sura will be our energizer off the bench I bet.
If Sura feels defense is a strength of his, I can see why JVG wanted him on the team. ;)

Mentions playing with Charlie Ward... looking forward to it, etc.
Rich thinks he's the starting PG: "solid, workmanlike," good D, rebounder, etc.

Charlie Ward to be interviewed by Matt Jackson tonight sometime after 8pm.

One thing I will say about Sura from what I saw from him on the Hawks last year, and I saw a lot of their games where I live. Sura REALLY pushes the ball up the court. I see us doing a lot more fast breaks next season. Sura REALLY likes to push the tempo.
My guess is that it is a team 4th year. 3 years is reasonable as long as it isn't big money. 3 years, $13 million would put him at about $3-$4 million per season, which is about right for someone like him.
We'll see.

I think this is a solid pickup for the Rockets. If he isn't the answer to our PG needs, he can definitely be a key player off the bench. Decent shooter, above average defender, nice size, good rebounder.

...and 3 weeks @ $185/pwer week sounds about right for someone like Charley Horse Ward.

Thats good news. I can see a decent fast break finally from the likes of Sura, TMac, and Boki! This could be a strength. W/ all the bricks we made opponents put up last year, we didnt punish them at all......this year could be different.

Definitely more fastbreaking. We hardly did any of that at all last year and when we did, francis and mobley just couldn't finish it off. This will definitely a new weapon we add to our system. Happy Days Happy days. I'm just glad we finally signed some players :)

Well I remember you being at the game in Atlanta, and if you recall, the Rockets went uptempo when Yao had to leave that game. I think a lot of you expecting up tempo basketball are going to be sorely disappointed.

I like Sura'sa game, and have for years. I worry about his health (as he has a history of breaking down), so, please, JVG, limit his minutes. Make them count for 82 + 16 more W's in the springtime.

We can go uptempo even with Yao on the court. You really only need three guys running the floor to be an effective fastbreaking team. If Yao can collect the rebound and fire off a good outlet, then Sura, Tmac and maybe Boki can do the rest. It would be nice if we had a PF that could run the floor too but, what we have is still adequate.

In transition, Sura is an excellent finisher. ;)
There will never be fast break on a Van Gundy team....You will not see run and gun--cannot blame this on Steve Francis or Mobely....

A tip jar bet that the Rox aren't dead last in the league in FB points for the 2004-05 season? They were dead last under both RT and JVG. It isn't the coach.
I'd like to remind the critics of four little words about players who've been signed cheap.
You can trade them.
Now, wouldn't it be nice to be able to say that about, say, Maurice Taylor?
Would you like to be holding Eric Snow's contract in two years? Brent Barry's in three? Derek Fisher's in four? Remember how much fun we had unloading Glen Rice? God, it was hard fending off the offers. Remind me how many picks they gave us in return, and how many minutes we got from Amaechi?
If you don't like Ward or Sura a year from now, guess what: You can trade them.

You don't post very often, but when you do, you really echo my sentiments.
I can't imagine Bobby Sura got the full MLE. At most, I think he got 3M of it, which means at most he has 10M over 3 years guaranteed. Ward either got the rest of the MLE (which means 2M first season) or the vet exception (1.6M first season).

where can you find stats on fastbreak points? and while i know we were dead last last year (my God, brake check was stealing money, 40 bucks one game, 80 the next, repeat) were we actually last under RT? obviously we didn't have a lot but i don't remember being last, but then again i don't know where the stats are.

Not sure how we can't be last in FB points. You actually have watch the game for that.
I mean, we were the 2nd worst team in TO. It's not like we were good at FB.
That sure would be a strange stat: 2nd worst in TO, but mid-pack in FB points. Heh...no way.

If we don't like them a year from now, what team will? And who do you get in return? Moochie? If they stink that bad their only value is as cap filler and we'll probably end up throwing a 1st rounder in too.

It will be a joy once again to see this team fast break and finish. It will be nice not to have to see JVG waving his arm to push the ball up the court like he did every game last year. That just got painful at times! I doubt he will need to do that with Sura.
