ugh... relying on Duckworth, Munroe and a weak bullpen to get back on track. I hope the offense wakes up otherwise it could be a long 2 games.

Hopefully our offense can catch some fire behind their bats; if they don't, we'll make these weak pitchers look like Cy Young canidates.......again.

Argh. If it's not one thing, it's another.
I guess we can take solace in the fact that even if our offense would have been alive this last month, and given us leads past the 7th inning... that our patchwork/overworked bullpen would have blown at least half of them???
Maybe Jimy knew something by bringing in Lidge for his 2-inning stint last week (which is something I would NOT advise doing). But, Miceli has lost some of that oomph on his fastball that he had to start the season... and Harville/Weathers/Bullinger are nowhere near capable of filling in that slot either.
Well... I guess its better to have had a lead and tried, than to have never had a lead at all.
(Man... the Dodgers have won 135 straight games when leading after the seventh inning... MAN!)
btw... can Redding try gunning it up there to be a good set-up man?
His control isn't great, but if he has to only pitch one inning (in which, i'm assuming, he can let it fly at 95mph+ if he's not saving himself), he might be able to get away with getting more of the plate.
I'm obviously thinking long-term... because this team will need to reform the bullpen, either thru FA, or promoting somebody within the organization.

Ensberg hit a warning track shot off Gagne that most people in the crowd thought would be a HR (hell, even the announcers thought so...), and Bradley catches it at the wall and starts finger-shushing the audience.
The man of the two-year old temper tantrum is telling the crowd to be quiet... if that's not the "pot calling the kettle black", I don't know what is.

that's really the most amazing thing about this team. they're uncanny ability to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory no matter what. they just all seem to pull together behind this cause and when one guy is struggling (like say ensberg hitting a 2 out homer) someone is right there to pick him up and give up the lead with a costly error or GIDP or back to back homers. it's almost to the point you just wonder when it's coming and have a good laugh once it does because it's so inevitable.

Somebody remove Biggio from the outfield. He is terrible out there. He needs to be platooning with Kent at second I guess but he has no place in the outfield. He can't throw, he can't catch, and he can't field. What is left to prove that Biggio is an incompetent outfielder? His error cost us a run and the game in my opinion. How many more games can he lose for us? I can think of a number of instances where he stank up the outfield and we ended up losing the game.
The thing I don't get is Weathers seemed to find his groove in his last inning pitching pretty well while keeping the ball down. So, why not let him pitch the next inning and then let Lidge close it out? Why take a chance and bring in Miceli? In my opinion, the more pitchers you roll out there, the more the chance that one of these pitchers is going to have stanky stuff. My thinking is you go with what's working until you have a reason to change. The Astros bullpen is so bad that your chances go down the more pitchers you roll out to the mound. You have to go with what's working in my opinion. I knew we were in trouble when we switched pitchers. It's been the case most of the year that a pitching move backfires cause our bullpen pitchers are the model of inconsistency. Go with what is working and Weathers was working for once! Garner is making the same moves Williams would have made. I see no difference.
We stink to high heaven and I'm sick of reading the post-game comments which are all the same after every loss. It's pathetic. It's about time for the players to start pointing fingers at each other. Play the blame game. It's all we have left. I want to see some blow-ups in the lockerroom from the pathetic losers.

I think I'm going to officially go Luis Gonzales on this season. It's time for surgery and to get ready for next season. Last night's game was the straw that broke the camel's back for me. It hurts more to know that the offense came alive but there was another facet of the game to lose it for us. If it's not one thing, it is most certainly another.

On top of it all, they had the perfect opportunity to PLUNK Bradley (after the HR... hell, you've already lost the lead, who cares)... and they throw a fat pitch in the strike zone for him.
ah, who cares about wins anymore... this team isn't complete, and everybody knows that. (but, unlike the Rockets, they don't have the luxury of taking a couple of years till they ARE complete).
I would now start either grooming Redding for a set-up job, or just keep him as a starter... either way, you can't just let him sit there doing nothing (as he is now).

I agree. Trade everyone we can. It's time to totally rebuild. I am SOOOO disappointed with every aspect of our team this year. I guess the Beltran trade came back to bite us in the ass. Bring in prospects, as this offense(if thats possible) and pitching staff will just get crappier and older next year. Bring on Football season. Then basketball season.

I have officially given up on this team. Never have I ever seen such sloppy play.
atleast 5 times the astros have tossed the ball past their teamates.
Season is over. Screw it.
THis is a sad moment...
Man... it looks like this team has already given up for Garner (I expect a vicious tongue-lashing by him, and several players WILL be called out)
Seeing that this game is done now with that bullpen (Mota and Gagne), this next series AT Arizona is now the OFFICIAL funeral of this year's club.
If they end up sweeping the so-called worst NL team (they're not facing Randy Johnson, mind you), they might still have a decent pulse...
If they split, or get swept... that's it... re-name this forum, take the next month off before football, keep in touch with the Rockets PG situation... do anything as long as its not with baseball. That's when I (the eternal optimist) will give it up.

As optimistic as I normally am, even I cannot watch this any longer. This group of players are pathetic. they can't hit, can't play defense and the pitching has been terrible. You can officially add me to the trade everyone and start fresh bandwagon. Watching this team make me utterly sick. As a fan I am offended by the amount of money these guys get paid to play like crap.

07-20-2004, 09:43 PM
I agree with you guys. I am always supporting out teams. I never leave games early. I watch as many as I can. I still tell my friends the Astros will turn it around.
But after tonight's SLOPPY play I have to hang up my optimism and bring out the red faces. I am just ...too....pissed off right now. THis team looks horrible.
Like I said a min ago, I have officially given up on this team. I don't think I can wait till the next series like Nick. This, in my mind was the series to turn it around. Too late now. This team tore out my heart......again.
Also, If I was Drayton, I'd go ahead and sell the team... you couldn't have put more effort and resources into another team besides this year, and it certainly won't be as "fun" around the ballpark in the upcoming years (hell... we may have much better teams... but you won't have the attendence following Clemens like we did this year).
Also, if we do fall out of this thing much much more, why would Clemens continue pitching every fifth day? I'm not saying that he'd want to go somewhere else, because otherwise he would have stayed retired... but the ONLY reason he wanted to pitch for Houston was to try and get this team closer to a championship.
If it becomes obvious that this is not going to happen, Drayton & co. should do the honorable thing and let him know that he'd just be wasting his time and whatever stamina he had left, pitching in a situation that he WOULD NOT have come back for.
Of course, Drayton & co. would probably want to maximize the profits of having him pitch the rest of the season... in that case (if he's still up for pitching solely in "tribute" games), let him only pitch at home.... and if you're wondering why he's getting all this good treatment, its because he's the ONLY Astro who deserves it right now.
