EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- Middle linebacker Mike Barrow was waived by the New York Giants Wednesday in a move that will save the team about $3 million on its salary cap.
Barrow, 33, was to earn $3.45 million in his fifth season with the Giants. He also was supposed to earn a $1 million roster bonus next week. That bonus and the two years left in his signing bonus will be accelerated, cutting the team's cap savings.
The Giants had asked Barrow to restructure his contract in recent months but the two sides could not reach an agreement.
"This is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever been a part of in football," general manager Ernie Accorsi said in a statement. "But in this system, when a player's salary cap number is so high that it begins to strangle your opportunities to improve multiple areas of your team, it has to come to this, as anyone can see by observing the transactions in the league."
The release of Barrow means the Giants will have a new look at linebacker next season under Tom Coughlin.
Barrow, the team's leading tackler the last two seasons, was flanked at linebacker by Dhani Jones and Brandon Short last season. Jones has signed with Philadelphia as a free agent. Short is expected to sign elsewhere as a free agent.
The Giants have already signed former Eagle Carlos Emmons to replace Short and former Detroit Lion Barrett Green to replace Jones. One possibility to replace Barrow could be third-year man Nick Greisen.
Barrow, who will turn 34 next month, has been a starter since joining the team in 2000. The Giants reached the Super Bowl that season, losing to Baltimore.
He started all 16 games last season and finished with a career-high and team-high 177 tackles, including 122 solo. He had two sacks and three forced fumbles.
"Micheal Barrow is a great person and has been an outstanding player here, one of best free agent signings we've had," Accorsi said. "He helped us get to a Super Bowl, was an inspirational leader and was a joy to be around."
Barrow has 1,219 career tackles, including 820 solo. He has recorded more than 100 tackles in seven of the last eight seasons.
The 47th pick overall in the 1993 draft, Barrow played four seasons with the Houston Oilers before joining the Carolina Panthers as a free agent in 1997.
