After Rockets stuff, my favorite team/teams/memories of the NBA have to start with Showtime vs. the Celts back in the 80's. I still remember Magic's hook shot to win game 4 in 1987 like it was yesterday.

Also, I have vivid memories of Moses Malone and Dr. J tearing up the league in 1983; that was cool too. I had such a love/hate relationship with the lakers back then.

For whatever reason, maybe becsue the competition was at such a higher level, those games seem 'greater' to me then most of the Jordan era. It just didn't have the same effect when Jordan was beating a Jazz team that I didn't think was that good (because I remember the rockets beating that same team in years past, hence they just didn't seem that good).

What are yours?

Sam -- could not agree more about the Jordan era. seeing him school the likes of Craig Ehlo and Byron Russell just didn't do it for me,either. not his fault...but ultimately it is what it is.

i freaking loved the Pistons in the late 80's/early 90's. loved the idea of a team that didn't have one player average over 20ppg winning a championship. truly a TEAM. i dug that.

i loved watching the nuggets beat the sonics in 94...but that was mostly for selfish Rocket fan reasons.

Good thread SF.

Lets see:

Larry Bird and Chuck Person's classic duel in the 91 playoffs.

Larry Bird and Dominique Wilkins' classic duel in the 88 playoffs.

Isiah Thomas scoring 43 against the Lakers in the 88 playoffs despite being able to play on only one leg (badly sprained ankle).

BTW Sam. Ill give you $1 if you can tell me the nickname that Magic gave to that hook shot.

It was either the "junior sky hook" or the "baby sky hook" or something like that.

I accept only travelers checks and diners club, btw.

Oh, one more: Chicago v. Portland in 1992. Jordan hits a whole bunch of 3s in a row in the 1st half to everyone's amazement. Famoust shot of Jordan shrugging his shoulders in disbelief.

Close. "The real, real, junior sky hook."

The "real" part of the nickname is pretty important, so no soup for you. :D

I thought I didn't have any favorite basketball moments outside of the Rockets, but you reminded me that I did love to watch Reggie when he was shooting lights out. I especially loved the game where Reggie scored something like 10 points in the last 12 seconds to win a game that had seemed hopelessly lost.

NBA's Greatest Moments
Magic's Junior, Junior Sky-Hook Beats Boston

It was the end of a period in the 1980s in which it seemed like every NBA Finals matchup featured the Celtics and the Lakers, although in reality the two teams met only three times in the decade. The 1987 NBA Finals in a way marked the end of an era.
With the Lakers up 2-1, Game 4 in Boston was a pivotal one. Win, and the Celtics were even with their long-time foes. Lose, and it would be an uphill battle to win another title.

Boston rolled out to a 16-point halftime lead, but the Lakers whittled away at it until they were within eight points with three minutes left and down just 103-102 with 30 seconds to play. A pick-and-roll from Magic Johnson to Kareem Abdul-Jabbar put Los Angeles in front, but Larry Bird responded with a three-pointer to put Boston back on top 106-104 with 12 seconds left. After being fouled on the next possession, Abdul-Jabbar made the first and missed the second, but the rebound squirted out of bounds off Boston.

After a timeout, Johnson took the inbounds pass near the left sideline. He thought about launching a jumper, but lanky Kevin McHale was in his way. So he dribbled toward the key, with McHale in pursuit and Bird and Robert Parish moving over to join him. Before they could collapse on him at the foul line, however, Johnson tossed an old-fashioned running hook shot that nestled through the net, giving the Lakers the lead. After Bird missed an attempt at the buzzer, the Lakers had a 107-106 victory; they went on to win the series in six games.

Afterwards, Johnson labeled the shot "my junior, junior sky-hook," after Abdul-Jabbar's favorite weapon.

"You expect to lose to the Lakers on a sky-hook," noted Bird. "You don't expect it to be from Magic."

Sam,

Hmmmmmm. I am skeptical. I could have sworn he first labeled it the "real, real junior sky hook". I have seen "junior junior sky hook" too, but always thought it was just a take off from the original label. I remember he called it "real" because Fat Lever, who layed for Denver in the late 80s, also had a skyhook, that he called the junior version and Magic inserted the "real" to rib him.

I may have to go into enemy territory (Laker BBS) in order to find the real answer. Heh.

Lamely enough, I just did a lexis search and skimmed a few of the contemporaneous newspaper accounts from 1987; they all had te same "junior junior" quote.

Yes, I have too much time on my hands.

One of my favs was when Shaq broke the goal when Orlando was playing Phoenix. I also used to love watching the Bulls vs Knicks on Christmas day on NBC.

speaking of Bulls v. Knicks...how about "the dunk" that John Starks had?

One that was in our Rockets' face was the KJ dunk over Hakeem.

Well, this isn't really a *moment* but more like a stretch in a game. I loved it when Steve Kerr came off the bench against Dallas last year and single-handedly brought San Antonio back in the game with 4 consecutive 3 pointers. I think it was game 6 or something, IN DALLAS too. I hated San Antonio for winning, but I loved seeing what Steve Kerr could do. That guy can shoot anytime, anywhere, period.

Man there are plenty of great memories:

* Mourning hitting that long two to eliminate Boston from the playoffs.
* The Suns vs. Bulls Series was one of the best Finals ever.
* Barkley hitting a jumper with a few seconds left over David Robinson to advance to the Finals.
* Of course "Miller" Time against the Knicks.

iirc, that is incorrect . miller hit a 3, pushed someone down and hit another 3 to tie it, the starks missed 2 free throws, and somehow miller got fouled and hit them both to go up by two, knicks don't score, game over.

definitely one of my favorite moments b/c it beat the knicks.

vince carter's dunk over weis, his reverse dunk on the pacers, and his one handed alley-oop against the clippers.

the sonics losing to the nuggets b/c then i knew the rockets had a chance.

rex chapman throwing in an impossible 3 for the suns, maybe against the sonics, in the playoffs. back when they would run the 4 guard lineup.

and i'm just gonna throw in hakeem's block on strickland b/c it was so awesome, lets call it a portland play or something.

you may be right...i just have some memory of it delaying the game, so maybe i'm remembering that i was concerned it would go into overtime and delay the next game.

Rex Chapman's fadeaway 3 in the '97 playoffs I think with Phoenix

Shaq breaking down 2 backboards in his rookie year

Vinny "the Microwave" Johnson taking over games for the Pistons

Grandma Ma's 3 pointer against the Pacers in the '99 playoffs for the 4 point play

DRob's 71 pts

Magic's comeback as coach and player

Jordan going for 63 over the 86 Celtics. Never seen an individual scoring performance like that.

The 87 slam dunk contest between Nique and Spud Webb.

Obscure moment: Lakers guard Van Exel lighting up George Karl's Sonics for 40 plus because Karl told him he would draft him but then passed him up.

I've never seen it, but I'd love to watch the 186-184 game between the Pistons and the Nuggets on 12/13/83. Most NBA teams can't put up 186 points in two games

bigballerj
11-13-2003, 01:28 AM
Screw that...

Some teams may need an extra half on top of those 2 games to reach 186 :D

It's a good thing that JVG won't have to see another game like that or he will prolly have a massive heart attack with the extreme lack of defense that game had.

Favorite non-Rockets NBA moments? Not many because I'm a die-hard Rockets fan, but there are a few that stand out.

Just about any Jordan game.
Just about any Bird game.
Reggie versus the Knicks
Dominique versus Bird
Lakers versus Celtics, circa 80s

The Celtics are my second-favorite team (by quite a distance), so I enjoy watching Paul Pierce.

although..... I am still tempted to say: "The shot" from Stock.

well, I also love Sixers as much as Jazz. Plus I hate Bulls. So here you go. In one game vs bulls during AI's rookie year, he crossed over Jordan twice and hit the jumper in one sequece. Jordan's ankle was turned by himself.. LOL...

how come no ones mentioned this classic moment?

It was in the playoffs.... I forget which year... Rockets Vs Jazz...and stockton came up...and canned a 3 with barkley in his face at the buzzer to send utah to the NBA Finals. Then barkley was crying in the locker room , haha.
Awesome

Then there was nick andersons steal of MJ.
Also in a regular season game orlando vs philly...3.2 seconds left philly ball up 1...the inbounded a pass at halfcourt and darrell armstrong stepped in front of it and raced down the floor to lay it in at thebuzzer...best buzzer beater i ever seen...
