Seven Internationally Experienced Veterans Selected To Form The Core Of 2004 USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team

Headlined by two-time Olympic gold medalists Lisa Leslie (Los Angeles Sparks) and Dawn Staley (Charlotte Sting), USA Basketball announced today that seven international veterans had been named as core members for the 2004 USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team, which is expected to represent the United States at the 2004 Olympic Games. The first seven members of the eventual 12-member USA squad were selected by the USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team Committee, chaired by WNBA Vice President of Player Personnel Renee' Brown.

In addition to 1996 and 2000 Olympic gold medalists Leslie and Staley, named to the 2004 USA Women's Senior National Team were 2000 Olympic gold medalists DeLisha Milton-Jones (Los Angeles Sparks) and Katie Smith (Minnesota Lynx), as well as 2002 World Champions Tamika Catchings (Indiana Fever) and Shannon Johnson (Connecticut Sun). Additionally, Tina Thompson (Houston Comets), a 2000 U.S. Olympic Team alternate and a member of the 1998 USA World Championship Team before an injury forced her to withdraw, has been selected to the 2004 USA Senior National Team.
