Our Texans against the former Oilers.....
Tennessee w/ a record of 3-2 and coming off a win against NE. Do we have the defense to stop Air McNair? What do you guys think?
jw1144

NE beat the TItans 38-30.
I think the Texans have a shot if they can consistently put pressure on Mcnair.

McNair has been a great QB for years now, and seems to be getting better even with Eddie George not being a major factor in the offense. Hopefully Capers and the guys have devised a good plan against an aerial assault. We will need Aaron Glenn healthy.
Putting pressure on McNair is easier said than done. He isn't focusing on one or two guys anymore, mainly Mason and Wycheck. Everyone is a target in the Titans offense, and if no one is open, then McNair can always beat us with his legs.
The fact that he hasn't had to run a lot this year is a bad sign that their offense is clicking and their passing attack is to be feared. I hope Houston will be able to contain McNair but at the very least it will be good experience for when the Texans play Atlanta and Mike Vick later on this season.

The key for this game is obviously to shut down McNair, both through the air and on the ground. He can still run it out and gain 10 yards if a play breaks down. We have to have one of our LBs spying on him on almost every play.
Of course, even if our defense is dominant and shuts down McNair, there's the problem of our offense against their defense. I have to give the upper hand to the Titans in almost every area.

Well, I'm just not sure I'm ready to deal with the media onslaught that will no doubt dominate the days leading up to this game. I mean, Steve McNair is a black QB, right?

Few coaches prepare better for opponents than Dom Capers...and he's had an extra week to get ready.
The Titans should win...but I think both games were relatively close last year. I know the last game of the season was. I'll pick the Texas 16 Titans 13.

The Titans can run as soon as they take Eddie George to the Glue factory.
I mean that guy has lost ALL his will to run hard.
Why can't Fisher see what everyone else can?

Even if you get to McNair, he can't be tackled, it's damn near impossible. That's what makes him so effective. Plus he's in that zone where the game is easy.
The Texans seem to depend on turnovers. That's the one thing the Titans don't give you.
I'm a fan of both teams in a big way, I just think it's a bad matchup for the Texans all the way around. Titans is a romp 27-13.

Exactly what I was gonna post. Give Capers an extra week to prepare and he will find a way to beat you. Look for lots of blitzes on McNair and if we stop the run, the Texans should win this game. The Titans defense is so banged up that Carr will just throw the short slant to Andre and Gaffney and they will pick up big yardage. Look for Andre to get behind the Titans D as well for at least one long touchdown.

I don't think it's Eddie we have to worry about. It's Steve "Air" McNair, because he could be in a full body cast, and he still is capable of willing his team to victory.
PhiSlammaJamma

Eddie just had a 100 yard rushing game a few weeks ago. He's definately not the runner he was 5 years ago. But no Rb ever is. Last year he had 1,000 yrds and 12 td. That's better than most rb in this league. This year he's only getting 12-15 carries. Way down from the 27 he used to get. Plus he no longer has Mathews and Munchak. Two of the greatest lineman ever.
Also, consider this, the titans are 12 for their last 12 when Eddie gets 23 carries. That will bake your noodle. It baked mine.
I'll agree the running game appears to suck, but it's not as bad as people think. it's just not the focus anymore.

Basically, no. Eddie George is simply past his prime. Grant Hill hasn't played in four years, while Eddie rarely has missed a game, even when banged up. Grant Hill is a player who's career has seemingly been cut WAY short by repeated injury. Eddie George's career will continue to tail as a player who helped carry his team to a Super Bowl, and suffered from the wear and tear of being a taller RB.
Only comparison is that they both seemed to be upstanding guys in their particular sports.

This is a critical game for the Titans. They have to win this game. The New England loss and the Indy win on Monday night makes this a must win game for the Titans. This is where Coach Fisher excels. He is one of the best coaches in the NFL and I assure you the Titans will come out ready to play this game.
The problem for the Titans is that they have no running game what so ever. I agree with Da Dakota that Eddie George is done. Plain and simple. We need to get Chris Brown more carries and I am hoping this is the game Coach lets the rookie get some more playing time.
The Titans D will be jacked up and ready to play. We will be missing Samari and that will hurt. I know the Texans will be coming off a bye week and want this game just as bad as the Titans.
I just think in the end that Steve will prove again why he is the best QB in the NFL right now. I have great respect for how far the Texans have come in only their second year. I tip my hat to a class organization. However, Steve, will find a way for the Titans to win this game. Keep in mind the Titans rarely blow teams out and most Titan games come down to the last few minutes of the game. This will be a close game.

I suggest you get DirecTV, or you move to the world-class city of Nashville.
Also, what has Steve McNair done that Peyton Manning hasn't done this year?? Manning's team is undefeated, he's beat BETTER teams, and he put up these same amazing numbers ON THE ROAD against New Orleans (who's secondary is just as bad as the Texans).
They're both good, and I wouldn't say one is far and away better than the other... but you can't say McNair IS the MVP.

Manning has had an amazing season. If one player beats out the other, it would be hard to complain, but McNair has doen it with a crappy O-line and no running game. McNair is a stud.

Yea... McNair has the worse O-line. But, Manning's BEST games have come in the ones where Edgerrin James has been injured. In fact, he was awful in the games where the Colts have had a running game.
His performance on MNF spoke for itself... and if he can lead the Colts back against the Panthers, this Colts team has a shot at running the table.

They need to find a way to get the ball in A. Johnson's hands.
They had him running crossing routes earlier in the game... and they also had him in the slot in previous weeks.
I know this last drive was meaningless, but when we're in the red zone, the throws should be going HIS WAY.
I think Carr tried to become less one-dimensional in his throws during the bye-week. His yardage was good (371 yards)... but the 3 picks look awful.
Three great finishes right now:
Cowboys down one to the Eagles
Chiefs down three to the Packers
Undefeated Colts tied with the undefeated Panthers.

With all due respect to the Titans, I do believe Derrick Mason is (or will be ) a pro-bowl reciever.
With all due respect to the Texans, their pro-bowl CB Aaron Glenn was out today (and thus influenced the way they decided to help out on coverage patterns).
But, whenever you give up 400+ yards to ANYBODY, let alone Air McNair, you know your defense got some serious work to do... especially when we just played a team that has NO running game.
Cato=Bum
10-12-2003, 06:30 PM
Mcnair is clearly the NFL MVP right now. The Titans have a so-so D, the worst running back in the NFL, a crappy OL, and they don't have anyone near the caliber of Harrison at WR. The dude is a superstar QB and is much more clutch than Manning and has won playoff games, something Peyton has not ever done.
Dream34
10-12-2003, 06:45 PM
Titans dominated this game. Nice to finally see a Titans blowout. Does not happen very often. Also glad to see Carolina beat Indy. Very good weekend for Titan fans.
The fact of the matter is that the Titans have no running game and all the credit for this season goes directly to Steve "MVP" McNair. Steve rightfully deserves to be considered in the lead for the MVP race. However, what he cares about most is winning and winning in the post season. That is something that Peyton Manning can only dream about. Let Peyton Manning win one freaking playoff game before he can hold Steves jockstrap.
Yes the Texans were playing short without Glenn but the fact of the matter is that Titans have several very good receivers. Just choice your poison. Now add in a rookie stud like Tyrone Calico and the passing game will continue to flurish...
ps - Da Dakota. Excellent call on the game today... You almost had the final score down pat. Go Titans!!!

Matt Stevens-his name is enough.
Andre Johnson- anybody heard of this guy? i havent today.
Gaffney- Same thing, Gaffney?
Texans firsy play of the game was a 4 yard pickup.
The Titans first play of the game was a 14 yard pickup.
That right there was the story of the game.
Anybody else got tired of seeing all blue all the time? Our offense would run on the 1st and 2nd possesion then throw for a incomplete, then punt away.
How much offense did we get today about or close to 400?probaly one of the postive things about the game.
On to the NY Jets.

When he said "I never thought 20 years ago that I would be here speaking in front of all of you.." I laughed to my wife, "oh, I think he means in Nashville"...and the toothless guy next to me and his buddies started into us for not "getting over it"
I said, "Look, guys, we're over it..you can have Bud....and I will stay silent about all this for the rest of the game....if you can name ONE of Bethea's teammates"
They went back to drinking and left us alone.
The Vandy reunion was fun, going back to the frat house was surreal, but the ladies were as eye-popping as ever.

did your wife have to pop you a few times for checking them out hehe..
I loved it when bethea thanked the houston fans.. and even though I never really saw him play.. that was really really weird to see oilers highlights in that stadium...
oh and that stadium is trash! when I saw that vanderbilt has a little segment during the games.. the physics 101 thing I was mad!
I answered any crap I got for wearing texans stuff with.. A) We have the same number of superbowl rings as your team does B) I was a fan of this team longer than you have known they existed

Calico will be the franchise receiver McNair has never had.

So, when is Carr going to take any criticism? He might as well have yelled "I'm going to throw it to THAT receiver!!!" the way he telegraphed that last interception...

Texans...
pass coverage was non-existent
offensive line continued to struggle
offensive coordinator still needs to be fired
Carr needs to learn how to handle himself when he has noone to go to.
More on that last one... Carr seems to almost never run with the ball (maybe because of the offensive line?). I know QB's shouldn't but there were times when we only needed 3 yards and he coulda done a run-and slide, but he didn't. He also isn't very good at dumping the ball (got intentional grounding). Also, (most scary) he sometimes unwisely throws the ball into close double-coverage resulting in an INT. He's a very good QB and has what it takes, but still has some learning to do.

Sweet Jumbalaya. That was a romp. Mcnair will probably get the MVP based on the fact that he was denied last year. In the NFL you have to pay your dues. The only way he loses to Peyton is if Peyton takes the division from him single handedly. But they probably won't even win the division.

Well, he is still only a second-year guy, so he's still likely to make stupid mistakes. It's up to the coaching staff and Carr himself to continue to work on those weaknesses. As long as he appears to be making progess overall and there's more good than bad, then a lot of people won't feel like criticizing the guy.
But I don't think there's a problem with criticism of Carr if it's a legitimate thing.

Well, I think my criticism is accurate, but that doesn't mean I'm down on Carr. He reminds me a lot of a sophomore Peyton Manning. Still making mistakes and learning, but getting better and better, and definitely showing that he's got what it takes.
