(10-02) 20:54 PDT PHOENIX (AP) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks declined to pick up their $5 million option for next season on pitcher Miguel Batista, but said Thursday that they would like to retain him at a lower price.

Batista will get a $300,000 buyout. But the Diamondbacks hold the negotiating rights for his services until 15 days after the World Series ends.

"I spoke with Miguel's agent (Martin Arburua) tonight and told him, 'All this is saying is this number doesn't work for us,' " general manager Joe Garagiola Jr. said. "We've still got a lot of time to talk about a lot of things, and he and I agreed that we'll do that over the next days and weeks."

Batista had 3.54 ERA and was 10-9 this year, tying Brandon Webb and reliever Oscar Villarreal for the club lead in victories. He led the team with 193 1-3 innings pitched, and his 29 starts and two complete games were second to Curt Schilling's 30 and three.

How much do you think we'd be getting him for? If his option this year was 5 million, I don't know if the Astros would be willing to pay that much for a "third" pitcher...

I mention Jeff because I somehow believe he will be a dependable 3rd or 4th starter with a Good team like ours. He is not injury prone and he could come at a relatively cheap price. I assume/believe he does well against the Upper Echelon teams in our division. Miguel will not do doubt be a good addition also. Now it is up to the stingy/frugal Drayton Mclain Jnr and Mr Hunsicker to pick the right additions to this team.
