Coming to Reelection Campaigns and Toy Boxes Near You
By Dana Milbank

Tuesday, August 12, 2003; Page A11

Holy photo op, Batman! The president of the United States has become a military action figure.

When President Bush landed on the USS Abraham Lincoln three months ago in a naval flight suit, many commentators believed that the image of the vigorous president on the aircraft carrier would figure prominently in his reelection campaign. What the commentators did not predict is that Bush would become his own G.I. Joe doll.

Coming soon to a store near you: a foot-tall likeness of the president called "Elite Force Aviator: George W. Bush -- U.S. President and Naval Aviator."

Blue Box Toys, a Hong Kong-based company, will be distributing the Bush dolls through KB Toys starting Sept. 15. "Exacting in detail and fully equipped with authentic gear, this limited-edition action figure is a meticulous 1:6 scale recreation of the Commander-in-Chief's appearance during his historic Aircraft Carrier landing," states the breathless promotion.

For just $39.99, you get a plastic model of Bush wearing flight suit, survival vest and parachute harness, jauntily carrying helmet and oxygen mask -- just as Bush did on May 1 after climbing out of his S-3B Viking aircraft. The Bush doll joins many other Navy Seals, Blue Angels and World War II aviators in Blue Box's "Elite Force" series.

Bush is the first president to be so honored, "and maybe the last," said the company's spokeswoman, Lauri Aibel, who notes that some complaints have already been received. "We don't condone or endorse the president, but he fit the criteria of our Elite Force collection. . . . It would have to be somebody in uniform, a military hero of some kind, or depicting a military uniform."

Aibel said advance orders for the Bush doll are coming in at a record clip, though Blue Box has done no publicity or advertising yet. Blue Box Toys did not request permission from the White House for use of Bush's likeness, and a White House spokeswoman had no comment yesterday.

The company recommends that only those 14 and older use the Bush doll, which it says is an "adult collectible item" and emphatically not a toy. It may, in fact, pose a choking hazard for the president's Democratic opponents.

Makes you wonder how much of the proceeds are going to Bush's re-selection campaign.

If you pull the string in the back, it says,

"major combat operations in Iraq have ended"

If they were really going for the realistic effect, why didn't they make it a marionette?

lol M'Beth.

I actually don't see how this toy figure will help Bush's campaign. Anybody that is sentient will see this figure and be reminded of Bush's AWOL... or Cheney's (3? 6? 1000?) deferrals, etc.

This figure captures exactly how the republican party stands for national defense. Figurines, aircraft-carriers doing u-turns in the ****ing Pacific so that Bush will have the perfect lighting in his Britney Spearsesque video. Awesome.

Powerful, dumb, and fun-loving men are where it's at! I apologize for nothing. Plus, I'm relieved of federal tax liabilities.

I'd rather pay 39.99 to have my eyes gouged out than buy that piece of sh*t.

Anything which reminds voters of this hilarious episode is good for Democrats. Bring em on.

Dude? ARe you talking about the Elite Force Aviator?

You guys do realize that he was a passenger on a aircraft and landed on a carrier don't you? That qualifies as heroic to me.:D

I guess you could choose someone who likes to play military dress up or someone who actually has significant military experience.

I'll never understand how people in the military cannot care that Bush was a fortunate son who got to skip Vietnam, barely got into the Air National Guard (probably causing a more qualified candidated to lose his spot *irony*), and then went AWOL for like a month?

Oski, wasn't he AWOL for longer than a year's time? (AWOL is AWOL, but I'm just curious)

dc rock, I agree. Eddie Munster's candidacy should be taken more seriously.

I wasn't actually sure, so I thought it better to put something relatively short to not irk the conservatives. Not to mention Bush likes to take month long vacations about 3 times a year so it seemed to make sense.

Yes Bush failed to report for duty for right around one year, of his Guard duty.

There was a group of Viet Nam veterans, I don't know if they were conservative or not, that were offering reward money to anyone who served with Bush or could show that he he did actually serve during that year. It was never paid.

So he's gotten better over the years. During nam, it was a year long vacation. Now, it's just one month. His efforts to better himself should be applauded.
