Please forgive me if this is in the wrong forum....

I just wanted to pass the word and let everyone know that I am running for office this year (Houston City Council, District C). SERIOUSLY!!

I’m a native Houstonian, public auditor and CPA, and I have been a resident of this district for 13 years. My background in accounting and my ties to the community make me the perfect man for this job. I will bring an aura of fiscal responsibility to city government. My prior community involvement has given me knowledge of programs that can help my district while the city rebounds from it's financial crisis. I have identified cost-effective programs that can be implemented rather quickly in the areas of crime prevention, education and community involvement. Most importantly, I will represent and pay attention to ALL of the constituents in my district 100% of the time (i.e. treating this position as a real, report every day type of JOB).

Feel free to visit my web site to learn more about my campaign (www.SimsForCouncil.com). I can be contacted via e-mail (Malaki@SimsForCouncil.com), at the office (713-729-0122) or through this forum. All help would be highly appreciated, and I would really appreciate your vote if you stay in my district (check the district map on my site).

Lastly, if elected…I will do everything in my power to ensure the Rockets, Yao and Stevie never leave our beloved city. :D

I hear the california governorship is up for grabs.

Might as well try for that too while you're at it.

Icehouse,

Why don't you send me an email and tell me some of your goals and inclinations. I am the VP of the North Houston Rotary, but I am in the same district as that area and could get you speaking engagements at some of the different clubs in your area.

A family friend is running for City Council in District F (MJ Khan - No Relation) and I took him with me and got him speeches at 4 area clubs to over 300 people that are pretty active politically and socially around the community!

Hey, good for you. Who are you up against?

Would you support a change of city ordinances that would allow the new outdoor video screen at Toyota to play video and animation?

By checking out your website, I see that you are supported by several Democrat organizations, so I am assuming you are part of that party. (Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

I also see that you support fiscally conservative approaches to government.

Would you say you were socially liberal, yet fiscally conservative?

Would you be able to highlight some of the cost saving measures you hope to bring to Houston as well as where you'd like to see Houston's money spent?

By the way, I appreciate somebody on this board not just complaining about everything, but actually trying to go out there and make changes through a democratic process. This is the best way for real changes to be made, as well as getting your thoughts heard.

BTW: I see that you work for a big 4. My wife works for PWC and one of my best friend's significant just interned at KPMG. Are you tax, audit, ect.?

Now that you're a politico, can we expect all your posts to be sanitized for the public?

Good luck. I read your bio. Very Impressive.

It sounds like you're a good man for the job. Best of luck to you! Maybe you could introduce a citywide Rockets day or something. I don't live in Houston anymore, so I can't vote for you. But I wish you luck all the same. I'll see if any of my friends are in your district. I'll tell them to vote for you.

Are you for or against a strong national defense?

(j/k good luck!)

I don't mean to be an ass, but...

campaigning door-to-door for the Sierra Club and helping out with his fathers Non-Profit Organization.

it should be "father's nonprofit organization". Also, alot of your bio info sounds like the stuff that young people fill in their resumes because they have nothing else to put, and much of the wording is generally awkward.

That having been said, damn, I feel like a loser. You're four years younger than me and running for city council. If I lived two blocks west of where I am, I'd vote for you. Have you researched the history of under 30 representitives? I seem to remember that there haven't been too many since the late 70's, but I could be wrong... Anyway, good luck.

Good luck man. Judging from some of your previous posts I think that you'd do a fine job.

Hmmm.... I wonder what kind of mud I can dig up on Icehouse from his previous posts? :p

Seriously, man, good luck in doing whatever it is you political-types do! :)

Otto, you better correct your typos in that post before someone comes down on you in this thread for coming down on a nice guy like Icehouse. :D

Thanks for the love folks. :)

Check out the site man. Let me have that vote!!!

F.D. Khan:

Send me your e-mail addy, or just hit me and I will reply back (Malaki@SimsForCouncil.com).

I actually was involved with the Rotary Club during undergrad (at Morehouse in Atlanta). I also met Mr. Khan at the Turner announcement. Our districts are right next to each other, and he was very nice.

Jeff

I am running against Mark Goldberg (the incumbent). So far no one else has entered the race.

Supermac34

Yes, I'm a Democrat. I suppose I could be considered socially liberal, yet fiscally conservative. I agree with the Democrats on such social issues as abortion, education, health care, etc. I'm from a poor background, and I would not have "made it" without a lot of government assistance (like free lunch programs, the magnet school program, etc.). On the other hand, I don't believe in spending what you dont have (it's the accountant in me), and I think the city should take the conservative route in planning because the margin for error is so small (i.e. dont plan for your sales tax revenues to increase at the high end of your range when the economy sucks and every other city is expecting a decrease from prior year).

To cut costs, the city should:
A) Do a better job of estimating it's revenues and expenditures. I tire of watching budget after budget get fixed by one time transfers from other funds. PRIOR PROPER PLANNNG PREVENTS PISS POOR PERFORMANCE!!!
B) Improve it's credit rating.

I think the city should spend it's money on infrastructure problems (i.e. rail and drainage systems), crime prevention and education. I will admit that my thoughts are a bit biased since I reside in a district where you either worry about drowning when it rains or getting shot when you go to the store at night.

I work for E&Y (audit side)...been here for a little over a year. I worked at Andersen for a year before the Enron debacle. Hopefully you get to see your wife more than my girlfriend sees me. :(

JuanValdez

No, my posts won't be sanitized. However, I won't reveal my campaign strategy through the BBS, just in case any of you happen to know or like Mr. Goldberg. :-)

FranchiseBlade

A citywide Rockets day sounds great. It would be easier to do if we actually started to win some games.....

Ottomaton

You are not being an ass. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism.

C'mon now man...of course most of my stuff is going to sound college like. I have only been out of school for two years, and I can only list the things that I have done. Believe it or not, I am trying to maintain my integrity. :-)

I haven't researched the candidates under 30 (good idea though). I believe Berry is the youngest to ever be elected.

Thanks for all the good luck wishes. You need em going up against a two-term incumbent.

Damn, I'm just outside of District C. I think its really cool that you're taking some action in the city government. People like me just talk about doing such things but never take the initiative. I might be interested in volounteering. When's the election day?

Icehouse

Election day is Nov 4th.

Typical...tell a politician that you're not in their voting district, and ensure that they won't respond to anything you say....

:D

Kidding; clearly I didn't say anything warranting a response...

Icehouse, I've known Mark Goldberg for years and recently moved to the district. I was planning to vote for him, but maybe could be convinced otherwise. I would describe him as socially liberal, also and, no surprise he isn't for wasting money either.

Not too many people run as being against education, for crime or against the environment either.

How do you differ from Goldberg?

The main differences are:

1) My background in Accounting, which is just what the city needs while we are over budget. We are not over budget because the money wasn't there. We are over budget due to mismanagement. You might say Goldberg isn't for wasting money, but his voting history shows otherwise.
2) My ties to the community, which provides me with knowledge of cost-effective programs that can be implemented to help the district immdeiately.
3) My willingness to be the councilman, and pay attention to EVERYONE in the district. My main motivation to run was because I live in the hood, no one gave a crap about us and I am tired of no one doing anything about it. As I have been campaigning, I notice a lot of people in other areas have the same complaint. Their issues/problems might be different (for example, I worry about getting shot, while they might worry about having a soundwall built), but we all had the SAME complaint.

Fell free to drop me your contact info and we can discuss this further. :-) I applaud you for at least taking the time to listen to someone running against your friend. Most folks would not do that.

I LOVE YOU MACBETH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
