I have about 7 gigs of songs/movies on my computer, and everytime I open the file that they're in my computer slows way down and my cpu usage jumps up to a hundred percent. Is this common? Is there anything I can do, other than delete some stuff, to keep it from sending my cpu usage through the roof? I have the .mp3 and .avi files divided into different folders within the main folder, if that makes any difference.

Do you mean when you open the folder?

Check what your "View" setting is. If you have it set to thumbnails that might be the culprit.

Did you open Task Manager and see what is tasking your pc?

In windows 2k/xp just hit CTRL-ALT-DEL and pick Task Manager. If explorer.exe is hanging I would check a few things.

Clean up your hard drive and defrag. I would run the disk cleanup utility and then disk defragmenter. Both should be in Start - Programs - Accessories - System Tools.

I use WinXP and I have had this happen to me before, especially on my media files.

After defraging it was much faster. I had it set on details, not thumbnails, but that's probably just as taxing on the computer as the thumbnails are, having the computer pull up all that stuff on each song each time you open it. Thanks for the help.

By any chance, were you storing your video files in the My Music folder?

What does it mean if System Idle Processes is sucking you dry?

Turn off your computer immediately. System Idle Processes is a code word for Spyware . . .

Not really. That's a good thing. The CPU is idle for "System Idle Processes". For instance, if you aren't running anything, you'll have 99% System Idle Processes because you aren't using the CPU for anything. If you're running Winamp and it takes 6% of the CPU power, you'll have 94% idle processes, and so on.

Sounds like my computer.

I just had tons of Spyware and deleted.

Something called HotKeys was taking 98% of my CPU!!! Crazy.

Idle Process isn't a program; it shouldn't be slowing you down.

You did go to Processes and check what was the most I assume.

If it's XP, having multiple users logged on will also slow you waaayyy down.

If you find what is Spyware, or what is slowing you down, go to Start---->Run-->msconfig--->Services tab--->uncheck/disable spyware.

A great spyware detector is Spybot Search and Destoy.

I've still got my kick-ass Apple IIe!

This thing never goes down, but the grinding noise when I put my floppy's in is a bit annoying.

Booting an Apple IIe.

Repeat until you just turn the damn thing off. Still pissed I lost all of my homemade "Lode Runner" mazes. Mine were pretty kick-ass!

Idle process can't slow you down. Other programs do. I wouldn't doubt that you've probably got some programs running that are taking up lots of speed. System Idle Processes is not a program. The more CPU it takes up, the better, because it means the computer isn't using much CPU power.
