Craig Biggio and Warren Moon get honorable mention but I gotta go with the big fella, once again.
Did I forget anyone else?
Great poll.
Carl, as in Carl Lewis.

I vote for Hakeem, but Malone should be up there.
And so should Nolan Ryan.

As much as I love the Dream, I have to go with Earl. The way other football players talk about him is what does it for me. If it wasn't for television, you probably wouldn't believe half the stuff he could do on the field.

Damn, I thought of Moses but Hakeem is better. Missing 'The Alvin Express' is shameful. My bad.

The best Houston athlete ever is Beyonce Knowles.
Don't really care for the music, but I'd let her slam dunk on me in a game of one-on-one any day of the week!

Now that I think about it, I might have to go with Carl Lewis, he's the greatest track and field athlete ever, not many people would argue against that. The guy won medals in 4 Olympics, absolutely ridiculous.

I think that there could be a case for Jesse Owens as well.

Carl lewis should be winning this poll, hands down. He could run faster and jump higher and further than any of those other athletes...and he did it for a longer time. Maybe he lost some popularity after that embarassing attempt at the national anthem at that one baseball game... :o Damn, I still feel bad for him just thinking about it.
Still Lewis is easily the best 'athlete'.

Nope. I forget which high school he played for, but he never played for Bellaire.

Technically, you're wrong as usual.
Does this look like Bellaire to you? (http://www.rogerclemensonline.com/bio1.htm)

Overall - Dream.
But someone who was born here - Carl Lewis. He was a world class athlete. He was just amazing. If you threw out my bias toward the Rockets, then it would be Carl Lewis in a landslide. He came to my elementary school once with Mattress Mac, that was awesome.

Unfortunately, he wasn't born here, his connections is through UofH.

Look, I know that Jeff Balke helps run an amazing website and he was instrumental in keeping the Rockets in Houston, but best ATHLETE?? That's stretching it a little....
Maybe he wins the poll for best Houston musician...wait...nope, that goes to ZZ top! Sorry Jeff, but you're just one big loser! :D

He did pitch one year at Dulles High School before he went to Spring Woods.
A very good bio of Clemens can be read here:

Who is Gordie?

For anyone like me who grew up in Houston in the late 70's and early 80's, it has to be Earl Campbell. He had a pretty short career, but the way that Earl could run over people was amazing. An unstoppable force in his day.

I voted for Earl. I think he put Houston sports on the map in the luv ya blue days.

i could be wrong but i would assume it's Gordie Howe.
i voted for hakeem. our first titles ever, sustained excellence, have to go with him.
carl lewis would be second i think, though you could argue his accomplishments were greater. bball is too high profile though so i give to hakeem for giving Houston, not just an individual, some titles.
earl 3rd.
nolan (my favorite baseball guy ever though i was too young to ever watch him play here) would be 4th.
we've had some good ones.

Who is Gordie?!? Man, we live in different worlds … ;) Gordie is Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe, arguably the best player to ever play the game. Of course he was on the down side of his career when he played in Houston, but he is truly one of the all time greats.
I have a question for the Earl Campbell fans. Why did he pick the number 34? I’ve heard that he chose it because it belonged to a FB named George Reed and I’m curious to know if this is true.
