Astros' Miller placed on disabled list

April 15, 2002

HOUSTON (AP) -- Houston Astros right-hander Wade Miller was placed on the 15-day disabled list Monday after team doctors diagnosed him with a pinched nerve in his neck area.

The pinched nerve also caused arm pain, the team said after doctors examined Miller, who returned to Houston from St. Louis last weekend.

Miller, 0-2 in three starts, gave up six runs and seven hits over five innings in a 7-3 loss Friday. He was 16-8 with a 3.40 ERA last year but hasn't won since Sept. 7. Since then, he is 0-3 with four no-decisions.

Houston planned to bring up a reliever to fill Miller's roster spot for this week's series against Cincinnati.

Well, it sucks that Wade has to go on the DL, but at least we have a good reason now for his terrible start.

I swear. What is it with baseball players? How do they get these injuries? Hopefully this isn't the start of an injury-ridden season. The Astros whole season depends on the health of their young pitchers.

I would say it has something to do with whipping your arm around somewhat violently for 2-3 hours every 5 days. I sure as hell couldn't do what these guys do even if I was only throwing around 70 mph (which is still probably harder than I can throw).

Puffer is coming up today. Carlos Hernandez will start Wednesday ... Puffer will be sent back after Friday's game (barring other injuries / moves) and replaced with Redding, who will start Saturday. Puffer has kicked ass in AAA thus far (7 innings, 3 hits, or something like that).

that sounds good, puffer is the guy who changed his delivery to submarine or side-armed right? it seems like he could give a little boost to our bullpen, but hopefully picardo and brocail can do the same.

Not sure if Cruz has options, but if he does I'd keep Puffer. Cruz is still in spring training in effect, he missed a couple of weeks w/ an illness or muscle pull or something. He needs to work the kinks out somewhere other than the ML bully. Linebrink's also a possibility to go down if Puffer impresses.

The Astros whole season depends on the health of their young pitchers.

Last year, the Astros managed to win despite some horrible starts by Elarton and Lima. Oswalt didn't start until May. Reynolds wasn't at his best. Hernandez barely pitched at all.

While I think it's important, the Astros can overcome quite a few injuries, if necessary.
