just out of curiosity, the recent talk about the astros' early season problems, coupled with an article I read online today, got me thinking.

everyone knows that rolen won't end the year in philly, but apparently, centerfielder doug glanville is also maybe getting wanderlust and is also a free-agent at the end of the year.

being as how a 3b and a CF MIGHT help the 'stros, I'm just curious to see what other fans might offer philly in the way of a trade for these two.

this thread is NOT intended to be a discussion of whether you think we should give up on ensberg or whether you think we need a better defensive outfield than ward, berkman, hidalgo.

it IS intended to find out just what we fans would be willing to part with for these two players, factoring in as many factors as our little minds can handle.

all that being said, I think I'd be comfortable offering the Phillies:

Richard Hidalgo
Geoff Blum

for

Doug Glanville
Scott Rolen

now, I acknowledge that the Phillies probably would not be moved to pull the trigger for this offer. part of it would depend on how close to the trade deadline it was, and of course, what other kinds of offers they were getting.

also, I don't know how highly thought-of Hidalgo is around the league at this point.

but I am really beginning to feel like he's never going to be a very good hitter for average, and that worries me a great deal.

I include Blum because I'm assuming the Phils would want a 3b in return, and I'm not comfortable giving up on ensberg yet. ginter might be able to play third if rolen came and went, but as haven has pointed out, I don't want to put too much stock in any one prospect.

so. . . I could make this deal and feel comfortable about it, especially with Jason Lane still coming.

if the Phils did not want another 3b, but instead wanted something else, I'd have to re-think my offer.

so what do y'all think? what would you feel comfortable offering for Rolen and Glanville?

p.s. if someone could tell me what hole in the lineup Hidalgo was hitting during his one good year of 2000, I'd appreciate it.

Yes, but don't hold your breath.

I think Hidalgo has always been in the 5 spot. I wouldn't give up on Hidalgo yet because that one good year was too good to be a fluke. Right now he already has more HR and more RBI's than Bagwell. Now as much as I like Ensberg, for a trade to get Rolen they want a good 3rd baseman in return and Ensberg has more upside than Blum. I think we need to send Ward along to make the deal more attractive. A compensation draft pick would probably have to go thier way also. This deal won't happen though simply because Next year when Rolen needs to be re-signed, Drayton "cheapskate" McLain would rather let him walk than spend some money. Remember, Rolen turned down a 140 million dollar contract.

Glanville is a terrible outfielder. That said, I might do the trade simply to get Rolen. But I'd call up Lane prematurely before using Glanville in the OF.

Doesn't Philadelphia have Abreu? I would hate for Hildago to finally find his own in Philadelphia and make us look totally like Philadelphia's *****.

if we ended up with Rolen, I could live with Hidalgo looking good in Philly.

It's much tougher to find a good 3B than it is to find a good RF. I'd make that deal in a heartbeat, if part of the deal involved Rolen signing a longterm contract. I'm with haven though, I'd call up Lane and see what he could do instead of relying on Glanville, who's very mediocre.

Right now, I have as many homers as Bagwell.

Yeah, but I bet he is making more money.
