Likely to be the first player off the board, Carr quarterbacked his way into the record books his senior season at Fresno State, winning the Johnny Unitas Award, Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year Award and being named a Pro Football Weekly first-team All-American. He was fifth in the voting for the Heisman Trophy, and passed for 4,299 yards and 42 touchdowns.
