That would be a good pick outlaw, but I think she may be gone by the time we pick. As long as we don't draft snow I'll be happy. She's been nothing short of a dissapointment. We need a big body down low who has some lift in her legs. Somebody needs to help Tina on the block.
I just wonder if Swin Cash hasn't bumped herself into the number one pick. Washington will want Swin Cash really bad. They might even trade up to get her. I have a gut feeling Washington might be looking at Walker themselves. She's 6'3 and a load.
I have crockrom dropping to Houston right now. I'm not happy with that pick, but that's what I'm seeing.
I suspect Nikki Teasley may slip as well. That would be a nice pickup for the Comets as late as we pick.
nightingale might move into the top 16.
This is what I projected about 2 months ago. I haven't updated my mock draft yet.
Mock Draft
PICK TEAM PLAYER POS SCHOOL/CLUB
1 SEATTLE Sue Bird, 5'9", Connecticut
Seattle needs help in transition. Sue Bird will push the ball with confidence. She's an excellent passer and will give Seattle the excitement they have lacked. She is tough defensively and mentally, has incredible court vision and runs the offense to near perfection... She might not score 20 points every game, but she's the glue that holds a team together
2 DETROIT Stacey Dales, 6'0", Oklahoma
Dales is almost the perfect fit for Detroit. She fills the need for a wing yet her versatility would allow her to fill in at three positions if needed. She is a good penetrator, excellent passer and is also a good rebounder, gets steals and has court smarts. She is a streaky perimeter player but can hit the 3. Dales' uptempo style fits into Detroit's running game.
3 WASHINGTON Swin Cash, 6'2" Connecticut
Washington has a solid perimeter game. What they need is an inside force. Swin cash is not only a force, but she can score to. Swin's greatest attribute is she's one of the best rebounders I've seen... She's so quick, it makes her effective on defense and almost impossible to guard on offense...Runs the floor well and maintains control when driving to the basket.
4 WASHINGTON Ayana Walker, 6'3", Louisiana Tech
Ayana "Bird" Walker was the 2001 USA Basketball Female Player of the Year and rightfully so with an excellent performance for the USA team at the World University games, leading them in scoring and rebounding. Excellent post scorer, she is also a good rebounder and shotblocker, aided by her big wingspan. Also a good defender. She would add toughness to the Washington frontline.
5 PORTLAND Michelle Snow, 6'5", Tennessee
Portland is searching desperately for some front court help. Michelle Snow is overhyped, but she provides a lot of size. Extremely versatile for a center and will provide some scoring when asked.
6 MINNESOTA Deanna Jackson, 6'2", Alabama-Birmingham
Minnesota has plenty of perimeter platers already, what they needs is someone who can provide some low post action. Jackson is a defensive stopper who has a few low post moves that will come in handy.
7 ORLANDO Angie Welle, 6'4", Iowa State
Orlando is in need of defense. They ranked near the bottom of the league. Angie Welles can be an automatic turnover on offense, but who cares, she'll give you some points and provides a big body to fill the paint.
8 CLEVELAND Sheila Lambert, 5'7", Baylor
Whatever you've heard about guard Sheila Lambert, it's not enough. She's one of the hardest matchups for any cover, and she will be for whomever must guard her in practice. She's scary-quick, versatile and really understands the game.
9 CHARLOTTE Tamara Moore, 5'11", Wisconsin
She's versatile and can play many positions. That's just what the doctor ordered for Charlotte.
10 HOUSTON Danielle Crockrom, 6'1", Baylor
We have one of two positions to fill. We need a point guard and we need a Center. We've been down this road before, but that is why Crockrom is the perfect pick. She will be the most powerful player left. She's home grown and has good self-discipline... Strong physical player and can create her own shot on the post.
11 UTAH Nikki Teasley, 6'1", North Carolina
The move from point guard to the wing has strengthened her game as she is able to use her natural scoring abilities to greater effect. She can penetrate and has an improved outside shot. Being a former point guard, she's an excellent passer as well and her defense isn't too shabby either. She would be a good fit for Utah as she would be one of the primary offensive options and she'll also encourage them to make more transition baskets. Hopefully she has her issues worked out.
12 SACRAMENTO Felicia Ragland, 5'9", Oregon State
Felicia has excellent court awareness. Sacramento already has excellent backcourt play and if someone could get open they would truly benefit. Felicia can do that. She can elevate the level of her team’s play... Has strong, authoritative confident style... Has tremendous potential to be a truly great player...
13 INDIANA LaNeishea Caufield, 5'9", Oklahoma
Caufield has terrific potential as both a scorer and a defender. She can do a little bit of everything. Indiana has already filled some holes, but they need someone who can do what Caufield can. A little of everything. Caufield is a winner, is remains to be seen how she will handle losing.
14 NEW YORK Mandy Nightingale, 5'6", Colorado
New York isn't missing much. They just need that one element that will push them over the top. They may never find it this late in the draft, but they should get some hope if they draft Mandy Nightingale. Not only does she have sexy cool name, but She can get to the hole. She's the best pick left at this point.
15 MIAMI Kelly Komara, 5'7", Purdue
She's a solid defensive performer. There isn't much left to pick from here. So you go with a specialist. A specialist from Purdue isn't too shabby.
16 LOS ANGELES Erica Vicente Essence Perry, 5'7", Louisiana Tech
What does LA need? They are the world champions afterall. The backcourt leaves a lot to be desired. Essence Perry comes from a big time program and will help them to run a little bit. Houston doesn't have a point guard either, so this could be a major plus.
Outlaw and PSJ - thanks for the informative mock drafts. I have to say though, since neither of you had the Comets picking a post-player from Eastern Slovenia, your mock drafts have zero credibility ....
Seriously, why no foreign players in either mock draft?

The Korean national team's starting centre Sun-Min Jung is considering entering the 2002 WNBA draft. Also, starting Korean national team point guard Yang has also been mentioned as a possibility for the 2002 WNBA draft .
Spanish national team guard, Begona Garcias, is also deciding whether to enter the draft Young Australian centre Suzy Batkovic is expected to enter the draft.
Article:
The Shinsegae Coolcat launched its smooth navigation toward the champion trophy.
The Shinsegae made a pleasant start, defeating the Hyundai Hyperion 84-78 in the opening game of the 2002 WKBL winter league yesterday at Jangchung Gymnasium.
The key player was of course Jung Sun-Min, a leading player of the Shinsegae, who recorded 24 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists. Before the season opened, Jung Sun-Min originally hoped to advance to the United States` WNBA, but she signed a 110 million won contract, which is the highest salary among the Korean female basketball players. Jung received an official invitation from the WNBA in April this year, for the first time as a Korean player. But Jung decided to stay in the domestic league, because the club promised for the best salary, requesting for her to stay, and many WNBA star players are supposed to play in Korea for this winter league.
Jung said, "It is important for me to play in the big league of America. But I thought that it would be also important to experience the play style of the WNBA players in the domestic league. So, I think that this winter league is a kind of preliminary test for me to advance to the WNBA." This is the reason why she signed the contract.
In the first game of the winter league, Jung Sun-Min showed the totally different performance. She was no longer a player who tried to take care of everything by herself, at whatever cost.
Until the second quarter, Jung recorded only 4 points attempting three shots. Discarding her old habit attempting to shoot even under defenders` pressure`, she played a part faithfully as an assistant. She made 7 assists during the first half, which were almost the same as the Hyundai`s team record.
Jung changed her role again, creating much confusion among the opponent players. As she was relieved from the pressure of the opponent defenders, Jung stood at the front line of offense by herself. As soon as the third quarter began, she scored six straight points.
It looked as if she could score at will. Such a confidence was coupled with the incredible concentration on the ball. In a 64-67 led fourth quarter with 7 minutes and 21 seconds to go, as Hyundai`s Jung Yoon-Sook fell to the court grabbing a rebound, Jung Sun-Min rushed to take the ball without delay and finally scored points. And when her teammate Smith missed an easy lay-up, she also chased the ball immediately to get two free throws from the foul line.
In the fourth quarter, Shinsegae turned the table with Jung`s free throws to take the first lead in this game, and determined its victory rather early with Jung`s lay-up shot and the scores from Lee Eon-Ju and Smith assisted by Jung.
PSJ:
So you think the Comets will resist the urge to draft Teasley? (I agree with outlaw, I don't think she'll be around when the Comets pick, anyhow.)
But if Teasley were to fall to the Comets, WOW! She would certainly be my pick.
She could be the answer at PG, in their system the PG is more of a lead G, anyhow. (Let's be honest, Cooper was more of a PG than any of her backcourt mates)
Plus, I think they're going to have to find some additional scorers, or hope that Lassiter builds off her playoff performance, especially with Swoopes coming off the knee injury. That's the main reason why the Sparks are the Champs, the Comets lacked another scorer. Teasley could definitely help there.
Also, do you think the Comets would try to trade up in the draft? I know finding someone willing to deal may be tough (I'm sure nobody's in a hurry to help out the Comets), but they have a little duplicity on the roster (Lassiter, Valdemoro), and they are a tough team to make. Why not dangle the 1st rd, 3rd rd, and Valdemoro to move up?
PSJ - thanks for the info. I don't know much about the players outside of the WNBA, but the Comets need a center who can contribute in the post now, rather than later. I hope that someone is available when the Comets pick. If not, then IMO the Comets need to trade one of our wing players and our pick to either move up in the draft or trade for a qualified post player.

I'd be OK with Crockrom since she is an excellent rebounder. Just wished she blocked more shots.
If Teasley is there at #10 then I'd take her and start her at PG.
Tawana McDonald from Georgia might be available at #26 and Van has said he wants her. She is a 6'4" center who is a good shot blocker.

Haven't heard anything about true foreign players in this draft but there is a 6'2" power forward from Vanderbilt named Zuzi Klimesova. She is Czech not Russian. Someone on another board said Van is interested in her.
This season she averaged 15.5 points and 7.3 rebounds. She only had 11 blocks but she did total 104 assists and 54 steals in 35 games.
Zuzi shot 57% from the field and 81% from the foul line. She made 6 of 19 three-point attempts so she has some range.
Here is her profile (http://www.vucommodores.com/womenhoop/Players/Klimesova.htm)

hehe. the liberty already have a 5'6" guard from Colorado (Becky Hammon). They need help in the paint. Tamika Williams from UConn has had some back problems so she might be available. She plays harder than that other Tamika (Whitmore).

Teasley probably won't slip that far, but you never know. She has really struggled at times. I've found in the past that there is an overwhelming focus on Centers and Power Forwards ( Especially in the 3rd and 4th round ) in the WNBA draft. I expect that focus to be in the first round this year and that focus might cause her to slip.
The rumor is that Seattle is fielding offers from everyone. The whole world wants Sue bird and they are willing to give up quite a bit to get her. The Comets have enough talent to trade up, but I wonder who would want to trade with the Comets. The rest of the league is trying to keep us down. I just can't see it happening unless we gave up the farm. I'm not willing to give up Amanda. Lassiter gives us one thing we don't have and that is depth. The Comets are stuck needing a lot of things. We need depth. We need a PG. We need a Center. Oh my. I'ts going to be tough to fill all those needs.
I agree that we need front court help now. The Comets can't match up with LA on the inside. We can still beat them, but it would be a lot easier with a big body in the middle. Maybe we can trade for a Veteran. I haven't thought about it too much, but it wouldn't suprise me.
Deanna Jackson is rumored to be injured. May be something to think about to.

Lambert is injured too and might require surgery.
Would you trade the 10th pick + Amanda Lassiter for...
Maria Stepanova?
Margo Dydek?
Elena Baranova?
Tangela Smith?

Zuzi has good genetics too. Her mother (6-3), father (6-8), and uncle (6-9) all played on Olympic Basketball Teams (1976-80) for Czechoslovakia and her grandmother is generally acknowledged as the greatest woman athlete of post WWII in Europe
I was looking for scouting reports on her and found next to nothing. There isn't much info on her at all. She's been pretty consistent over her career, but her ppg did drop this season. The only scout info I could get on her was that her Post-up ability is evident and she is versatile... Plays the perimeter well... Very quick and explosive... Uses strength to her advantage... A difficult player to defend... Plays the entire floor very well... A true and definite prospect...
Her passing was rated an 8 which isn't too bad for someone of her size. She's a good looking woman too.
I'll get back to you on the trades later. I've got to think about those.
Outlaw - thanks for the info on Zuzi. She seems to have plenty of skills for a 6'2" power forward (range and passing), but 4th in rebounding in the SEC and the low shot block totals leave me cold. Although I know nothing specific about the talent out there, I would be surprised if there weren't one or more true foreigners taken in the first round.
Like PSJ, I have no interest in trading Amanda, but I would make an exception for Stepanova. I doubt Phoenix would be interested though. I would rather try to move Valdemoro and/or Lewis and the pick for a higher pick or a veteran center (although I love Lewis' attitude).
PhiSlammaJamma
04-02-2002, 03:56 PM
I'd bet that Phoenix is still willing to trade some more. Cooper is going to want another player who reminds her of herself. I have no doubt in my mind about that. So she's probably on a long search to find just such a player. I was thinking she'd draft the Baylor point guard until she traded for Grubin. Grubin is not the answer. Amanda Lassiter could be the type of player she is looking for. I still don't think I'd trade her. I'm tired of wasting picks and players on a foreign legion. It would take at least Lassiter and some picks.
...The more I think about it the more I think Stepanova would fit in well. I might make that trade.

We could include Cooper's player rights and Tammy Jackson too.
I'd give anything (outside of the new Big 3) to have a 6'8" shot blocker to guard Lisa Leslie.

That roster looks pretty good Outlaw. If Valdemoro is every bit as good as we think she is ( although we have absolutely no evidence to prove anything), then I think we could make the trade. The Big Three have logged plenty of minutes already. It would be a question of can they hold up logging another year of big minutes. I think they could.

I wouldn't mind Lambert as our starting PG but she just had a high ankle sprain and a fractured fibula. Hopefully she will be healed by the start of the season.
I don't think Dales will fall that low though she does seem like a Brian Agler type of player. Portland would take her at #5 and team her up with Jackie Stiles in the backcourt.

It's not active yet, but it will be cometscourthouse.com
Thanks for the link. It's well done. I like the flash. Somebody put some time into that site. Her old site went down and I'm glad to find it again. Thanks!
If I can get enough people for the fantasy league I'll set it up. Right now we have next to nobody. But I know there is some interest from the Storm fans and they might join us if another site goes down.
I've still got some more work to do on my site before it's up and running. But I will have it up before April 14. If I can find some volunteers :) to write stuff it'll cover just about everything. The primary focus will be on scouting the players from NCAA, WNBA, and of course, The COMETS themselves!
I will be looking for volunteers to write
1) Comet game recaps - not so much what happened during the game, but a personal account what you think happened out there. You are free to submit whenever. There is no responsibility here.
2) Articles - Anything and everything will be published within reason. I could really use a Lobo Article! Even articles from other teams reporting on the state of their team and ours will be published. I'm not going to edit it unless you want me too. Articles can be as short or long as you want them to be. If you want a column you can ask me. I'll probably set one up for you.
3) Scout reports of wnba players - I have a specific format I'll need the volunteer to follow. You can add your own personal views, but I want the report to include some professional scout reports when they can be located. You can scout one player, or the whole team. Whatever you feel you can do given your time.
4) Someone to look up stats on college players. They are really tough to find. I have a lot already, but it get's confusing with the conference stats getting mixed in. It's hard to verify the stats.
Question for the experts:
How does the Lobo trade effect the Comets draft strategy?
Do they still go for a C since Lobo is still a risk?
Is PG the #1 priority now?
PhiSlammaJamma
04-04-2002, 11:28 AM
Good question Live. There's a lot of debate about whether or not Lobo will even start. I think she will, but Tiff is the vet so it wouldn't surprise me if Tiff gets the nod.
Personally, I think PG is the way to go. Especially if one them slips down to us. We've been very weak at that position for a long time.

Tamara Moore from Wisconsin could be a sleeper. I agree with PSJ's earlier assessment of her and I should have had her in my mock draft.
She is very versatile just like Van likes. She averaged as many assists as Sue Bird or Sheila Lambert and more than Stacey Dales.

RR - I would add Trish Stafford-Odom and Ty Lewis to your rotation. Van has said he still thinks Henderson can contribute at the point, but I haven't seen it yet. Amaya was injured all last year, and is reportedly still overweight. If so, she may have trouble making the team. I think some combination of Lobo, TSO, Europeans (if any show) and draft picks will back up TT at pf.
PSJ - could your provide us with a little more in depth information about Moore? What is her shoe size? ;) :D
