Any virus, potentially (http://science.slashdot.org/story/11/08/10/1917232/New-Drug-Could-Cure-Nearly-Any-Viral-Infection).
A team of researchers at MIT's Lincoln Laboratory have designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected (http://marginalrevolution.com/marginalrevolution/2011/08/possible-progress-in-medicine.html) by any type of virus, then kill those cells to terminate the infection. The researchers tested (http://www.plosone.org/article/info%3Adoi%2F10.1371%2Fjournal.pone.0022572) their drug against 15 viruses, and found it was effective against all of them — including rhinoviruses that cause the common cold, H1N1 influenza, a stomach virus, a polio virus, dengue fever and several other types of hemorrhagic fever.
Promising, one can hope.

That's awesome!
I wonder if the gov't will intervene if they create a drug that stops HIV viruses.

Odd- I was thinking today about how we haven't done much vs viruses.
Going to be hard on your body to take this med.

"However, it would appear that once the HIV RNA has been reverse-transcribed to cDNA and integrated into the genome, then the approach presented in this paper would not work--i.e. if you have AIDS, this won't help you."

they create a drug that stops HIV viruses.
From what I read (but readily admit do not understand) this medicine would appear to work on HIV theoretically, but not on AIDS.
EDIT: Yeah that, ^^^, whatever it is that Rizzy posted. ;)

What if the virus has infected too many of your cells and then the thing kills all of your cells then do you DIE?

Sounds like chemotherapy in that regard.

new age penicillin perhaps
eventually we'll all just die from raging super viruses that's immune to everything, that or nuclear war, or an apocalypse
isn't there some thing about pharmaceutical companies buying up all the cures and storing the secrets somewhere away from the public... so they can keep people on 'treatment'...

I'm sure there is a cure for AIDS already, we just can't afford to make that public.

This is really exciting. I'm waiting for the cancer killer. Then we'll have to start worrying about running out of water and other resources instead.
This would be similar to that Starz show - Torchwood: Miracle day, in which everyone on Earth stops dying.

It seems once in a while there will always be articles that talk about some supposed "breakthrough" that could change the landscape but never materializes, hope this isn't one of them.

The Cure for HIV is a syringe of concentrated money into the bloodstream.

While they are at it, we need a cure for internet viruses, too, and trolls like OHMSS. You ban them and they just come back in a different form and stronger.

The thing about always advocating humility, is immortality is the most non-humility thing there is. Everyone's in on it, religion and science both. You just end up with a permanent set of people who CAN'T reproduce once you run out of room on the earth.
I'm intrigued by that prospect. Though at the same time living with a perma-douche class of people FOREVER isnt too enticing either.

Even if they never release the cure for HIV, getting rid of other STDs would be huge. The cold medicine corporations prolly wont stand for it though.

There might very well be. I don't doubt the government would protect its own big pharma companies.
