I've never really been to New York, but am going with some friends soon. Any suggestions on things I must do/places to eat? (particularly on a Thurs and Fri in the city)
Any broadway shows that are highly recommended?

For food (pizza), definitely visit Vezzo on Lexington and 31st, Nino's near Tompkin's Square, and the Grimaldi's in Brooklyn.

this. walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to get there. a bit tiresome, but worth it if its a nice day. (also think they just opened a Grimaldi's in Chelsea if you dont want to trek to Brooklyn). oh yeah, the wait to get a table can be a b*tch, like, 2 hours regularly. people just line up outside. i thought the pizza was pretty good, but def worth the trip if you walk over the bridge.
for Burgers try Shake Shack (3-4 locations all over city: there's one near Times Square, one on the Upper West Side and the original in Madison Square Park near the famous Flatiron building, so you could kill 2 birds with one stone there), Burger Joint (hidden behind a curtain inside the Le Parker Meridien hotel - 57th or so between 6th and 7th), or Blue 9 (my personal fave near NYU/Union Square. the business started as a class project back in the day. i love it, but my girlfriend hates it, so could be hit or miss for you).
sorry all i have is food advice, you should do the typical touristy things just to see them - Times Square (tourists everywhere but the ads are quite a sight), Wall Street (to see the bull), 5th Avenue (shopping, tourists everywhere, Trump Tower), Flatiron, Union Square and much more.
almost forgot, for the late night drunk meal, go to the Famous Halal Guys cart for 'chicken and rice' - get the combo though. 53rd and 6th. lot of white sauce, little bit of red

I hear the Book of Mormon is a great show
also, if you are a Seinfeld fan, the Kramer tour is a MUST

Yankees game. Eat at the sandwich shop across the street. I had a Steinbrenner and the missus had a Derek Jeter.

You could try some Korean food around the Empire state building...after going to a Knicks playoff game and seeing Jefferies dribble the ball off his foot in crunch time.

Try to hit up the MoMA.
Shake Shack is a good call - Madison Square Park location is my favorite.
Arturo's Pizza on Houston and Thompson is fantastic.
Pearl River in SoHo.
Like CLFranchise said, just go for the touristy stuff if it is your first time in NYC.
