Funny story, me and my girlfriend had been going back and forth on getting a dog. We wanted one that was atleast about 5 months old so we wouldnt have to go through the house training phase. So yesterday we decided a puppy would be too big a responsibility to take on willingly. We're both young professionals busy with getting our careers started.

Today I'm walking out to my truck in our Kingwood apartment complex, and I see a Coors light box placed in front of my truck. I walk up to it and see this little guy inside it, cold and scared. One of my neighbors had seen the box outside his window about 3 hours earlier, so I can only assume it was abandoned.

Could anyone tell me what kind of puppy this is. It looks like a lab to me but it's paws dont seem large enough for that to be right. I'm sure it's just a mutt. How big do you think it might get?

We'll probably end up keeping him, it kind of seems like a sign since we had been seriously discussing getting a dog or not for the past few weeks. If anyone on here can provide a good home and family for him though send me a PM, because I'm not 100% on keeping him.

take him to the vet first hing to see if he has any illness signs etc, maybe there was a reason poor guy was abandoned; its not cheap to get him, but it is rewarding and dog's loyalty is 2nd to none. Gluck

Thanks, we're going to try to get him to the vet tomorrow. I hope there's nothing wrong with him.

No way to know at this stage. I've had dogs that I KNEW what mix they were but you couldn't see it in them at all until they were 4-5 months old.

Good point. Breed isn't important to me, but I really just need to know that he wont be a 15 lb chihuahua mix. Yappy dogs get on my nerves.

You should keep the dog. I had similar experience. A friend of mine was giving out puppies for free and we thought it would be nice to give one to our cousin who really wanted a puppy. Long story short, I go to pick up the puppy, the owner insists I take a SECOND puppy, which was not very cute. No one really wanted the other one and we couldnt just throw it away, so we kept it and we have been very happy with it ever since.

Yeah no telling what he is until a little further on. He looks like a keeper, though.

Good luck with him. I got a puppy (total mutt) last March and they're definitely expensive for the first few months. But it's all worth it.

If you keep him or for as long as you have him make sure to try and socialize him with other dogs early on, so that he'll be well adjusted and not aggressive to other dogs later.

The more people and dogs he can be around at an early stage the easier it will be for him later.

Good advice, my poor little dog is mean to other dogs. She's never going to get some with that attitude!

Good advice. Kingwood has a lot of nature trails so once he gets old enough we'll be taking him for jogs :)

Take him to East End Park at the end of Kingwood Drive, everyone takes their dogs there (great place to take your gf as well). When he gets a little bigger and you're sure he won't run away, you can walk him off the leash, it's sort of an unwritten rule there.

If you walk him along greenbelts or in the park, you will need a tic treatment. He will definitely get them, they are rampant in this area. Ask the vet about them.

Be very careful introducing him to other dogs, a traumatic experience as a puppy can scar them. It should be a controlled environment, make it a pleasant experience.

If you really want to know the breed, you can send away for a DNA test. This (http://canineheritage.com/) is the one I used, it cost $80 (the more it costs the more breeds they test for). They send you a brush to take a cheek swab, you mail it back and they tell you the breed. They told me my dog was primarily Rotty with some secondary Doberman, I don't really see it.

People need to start taking care of their damn dogs, instead of abandoning it like it's a piece of furniture..
Look at me I have 3 dogs, a full time job, a Fat girlfriend, drug addict, a geek and I still managed to take care of them...
Just lock them up in chains and keep em in the attic, that's what I do...

You took it out of context, I said when it comes to dogs it comes with full responsibility... I just gave an example of me, I wouldn't want people to be like me, be yourself, an individual....

So, after a vet visit we found out she's 7-8 weeks old. Her guess was that she's a pug/shar pei mix (I don't see it) that will grow to be 15-20 lbs..

She's seemingly healthy without doing any invasive tests. I think we're probably going to keep her. Not as large as I was hoping but she's a good size dog to have in an apt.

Thanks for all the input ClutchFans

See my post above...i think I should get a rep for that...:)

I think the shar pei part is easy to see, especially if she has wrinkles on the forehead, as well.

Not only that, but a mix as described should be a chill dog. very chill. That and size should make her a good apartment dog. Once you get a yard, you can get her a big, stupid dog to be her goofy companion. haha

seriously, i think its classless. I have a pup, and I can't imagine what kind of coward leaves a puppy ina box for the trash to collect him.

Its sad when people don't know where to cross the line.

To OP...YOU ARE ONE LUCKY DUDE! That looks like one adorable puppy! It is extremely rewarding when bringing them up from an early age, they form such a strong bond with the family that they are indistinguishable from everyone else.

He looks like a golden retriever mix or something, just my ameture opinion but congrats and hope that he lives a happy life with you guys.

These next few months will be tough raising a puppy this young around my gf and my schedule. But I'm willing to put in the work for another member of the family. :)

I still don't see pug/shar-pei - looks more like a chihuahua to me.

cute puppy. i miss that period in dogs' lives. i raised two puppies by myself. so, you'll can manage i'm sure. get that pup a decent sized crate to accomodate growth. that dog needs a home of his/her own. crate training is a good idea.

i'm kind of jealous. looks you got a keeper there!
