Since this phone has been winning awards all around the internet for the Best CES product of 2011.. thought it deserves it's own thread now.

It's also got the very best of high-powered Android smartphones: 4-inch 960x540 screen, 4G powers, dual-core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 2.4GHz/5GHz wireless N, massive 1930mAh battery.
How many people are looking to upgrade to this beast?
This phone is hot, might upgrade from the iPhone 4

really hate bring palm into the conversation here, but it shows how innovative they really were. palm owns this patent (based off the foleo concept), but i doubt any legal ramifications will come of this if they're willing to let rim run all over their arse with the playbook.
in any event, hell yeah... that is a badarse phone. would consider getting it. depends on what smartphones and tabs hp announces on 2/9.

Last summer I correctly decided not to buy Android because I figured I'd have a dinosaur on my hands in 6 months. I just wonder where (and how fast) things are headed.
This phone is a major breakthrough and sets an exciting baseline going forward. Just think when HTC or Samsung kick in with their versions.

HP has never really been known as a litigious company, but you have to wonder if they'll wake up one day and throw the book at RIM and Motorola. Especially RIM, who basically decided to make their own version of WebOS and put it on the PlayBook.

To be honest, I have been completely satisfied with my phone. I got the Evo a month back and couldn't be happier.
Now, that Motorola phone looks awesome. That whole docking bay with the mouse and keyboard is sweet.

Beastly specs but stuck with AT&T firmware (no easily sideloading apps, no tethering without paying AT&T, MOTOBLUR which sucks) and an encrypted bootloader which is very hard to crack (like the Droid X/Droid 2. Honestly, I think I am going to stay away from Motorola Android devices, especially AT&T ones) meaning even with root, you are stuck with the firmware.
Great hardware (breakthrough hardware, very much a game changer in the smartphone world), not so great on the software.
Now the HTC Inspire 4G with Sense 2.0, that seems like something I want (kinda like an Evo with the next gen Qualcomm processor so better graphics/3D).
Overall, I am going to wait until AT&T drops LTE before purchasing my next device.

Looks neat, but I still think lack of tactile feedback would drive me bonkers. I have large hands, and typing on my wife's iphone is aggravating at best. My ancient blackberry allows me to type quite quickly and with few errors.

While I have to applaud Motorola for an incredible effort in putting this together and breaking new ground, the star of the show here really is the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip. That's why my next device is going to have a Tegra 2 or a TI OMAP4 (similarly awesome chip: Cortex A9, dual cores at 1GHz+, integrated PowerVR SGX540 3D accelerator, HDMI interface that can support a 1900x1200 display, 20MP camera image processor, hardware video encoding and decoding up to 1080p, hardware audio decoding so you can play music literally for days on end, 45nm process = great battery life, etc. etc.) The Qualcomm chips don't have the awesome multimedia capabilities that NVIDIA and TI's chips do. The Blackberry PlayBook, which also wowed audiences at CES, is powered by a TI OMAP4. That's why they were able to do stuff like play Quake 3D, watch a 1080p movie and play music simultaneously while playing around with a photo album.
I'm anxious to see what HP unloads on February 9. I expect their stuff to be Tegra 2-powered as well, and if all indications are right, their flagship 4G slab phone is headed to Sprint in June, although they might even do like Samsung and make their devices available for multiple carriers at once (a la Galaxy).

The only question though is if it's the motorola software that is allowing it to connect the dock/laptop to display that desktop. Doesn't seem like something that is native to Android. I'm sure it can be done but in my opinion the moto software is going to be on there somehow for it to function properly.

The laptop dock includes a screen, a keyboard, and a trackpad. There's nothing else on it. So yes, it uses the phone's data. The best part is, if you're still grandfathered with AT&T's unlimited, you get to keep it for this phone too.

tell that to the unrevoked dev team. it takes them awhile (though a lengthier method was made available beforehand). ex: newer evo bootloader. not to mention the availability of roms and if those roms are able to get even the normal fucntions of the phone to work properly (hdmi, front/back cam, mms, etc).

I know nothing about tech... so apologies if this is a stupid question. In regards to "docking" how far away are we when we can actually do it all wireless, instead of having to physically dock. Not to compare to Apple in anyway other than because i know it works like this, the itv airplay thing just does it wirelessly, right?

May have said it as understatement.. but I know what you're trying to say. All I was saying was... eventually it gets cracked and its behind everyone. It certainly is a long process and not an easy one.

Not sure what you're referring to. Are you talking about streaming media, such as Videos, Music, etc.? The docking feature has webtop among other things which all require you to have it connected physically to the dock.

yeah, i know apple tv doesn't quite do all that.
question just is everything i saw in the first video posted by the OP associated with the docking, how soon till that all will be wireless. it's definitely cool as is, but if you could just wirelessly "dock" that would be money.

This phone may never get a full root, if it has a locked bootloader (more than likely does) it probably won't ever be perm rooted. Doesn't matter if the webtop software gets hacked or not

thats going to be a ridiculous price if it ends up being $150, Thunderbolt is rumored at $250 and wondering how much the Droid Bionic will be
the only way i see it being that cheap is if they sell it just the phone itself and charge lets say $75-100 for the TV/PC dock and another $100+ for the laptop attachment. The Charging Stations/GPS Car holder were going at $30/each, so I can see them charging a lot more for the dock/laptop since they do more than just display the time :)

Me personally, I would use it as I use my iPhone... for music, surfing the net when I need info, games (occasionally), messing around with apps, and tethering. I really don't care so much about the dock... but I just want an Android phone because of all the stuff I have and use with Google. It just works out well for me. This phone comes out right after my contract expires so I'm leaning towards this, but you can't go wrong with getting the Samsung Infuse 4G or the HTC Inspire 4G.

Dumbest post i've seen yet.
This phone has the largest smartphone battery. (1930mAH battery which includes 9 hours of talk time and 10 hours of standby)
Idk how fast AT&T's 4G is compared to T-Mobile (both have HSPA+) but it's certainly going to be on par with T-Mobile and WiMax. I don't know how you can think any differently.
I don't think you've seen the new motoblur, it's a lot different now. But, once this phone is broken and able to root, that wont be a problem anyway. Custom ROMS are something you can do without rooting the bootloader, but I guarantee you that this bootloader will be cracked eventually.
Do your research before posting next time.

For the short term, yes. I love my iPhone, but it just makes more sense for me to have an Android phone at this point. I was never really a hardware person when it comes to phones... especially because I don't use half the hardware features. I'm a techie though so it always amazes me to try new things of hardware.
When the iPhone decides to integrate and allow a few things that I need in iOS, I may switch back to an iPhone, but I'm not going to be looking to get an iPhone any time soon.
I may skip out on the Atrix and get something else if something better amazes me at MWC, but I'm not bummed out by the fact that the laptop dock will cost $500 (I wasn't planning on buying any of the docks anyway) as others are.

If you value apps quite a bit, I'd hold off on switching to Android just yet. There still exists a pretty large gap in quality and selection between the two markets. I really don't know why developers aren't making the same apps available on both platforms. Even Facebook and Twitter are much better on iOS yet they have a huge user base.
Can anyone shed some light on the development? I was watching the Honeycomb preview from yesterday, and they announced Tap Tap Revenge was going to be available for Android for the first time. I couldn't believe a huge hit like Tap Tap on the iPhone waited this long to bring it to Android.

Honestly, I'm more of an experimental guy when it comes to apps. If I find one that I like, I'll use it... no matter how big or small the developer is. Same goes for games...
I do value apps though. That's one thing I'm willing to sacrifice to get Android, I know that eventually the Android Market will grow. The thing about Android is, it's more open than iOS. Anyone can create anything... I've seen duplicates of things made from iOS onto the market (though it is pretty much a copyright infringement).
I think I'm going to demo an Android phone in a couple of weeks and keep it for a few days to see how it fits me better. That'll give me a better perspective of if I'll be satisfied with keeping one of these until my contract runs out 2 years later.

I've been an avid iPhone user since its inception, but I have to admit that I'm growing more and more intrigued by the Android-based hardware that's coming out. I think that's why the Atrix caught my eye. Then again, I guess I'm just getting antsy to hear about the next big thing coming down the road from Apple. As much as I would like to try an Android phone, the thought of having to convert all my music and losing all my apps is very unnerving.

If I'm reading it right, Motorola wants $500 for that laptop dock? And that's not including the data fees you have to have:
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/03/motorolas-atrix-4g-coming-to-atandt-on-march-6th-for-200-bundle/
Moreover, those looking to buy will should have a difficult time laying off of the Laptop Dock bundle, which nets you an Atrix 4G as well as a $499.99 dock for the grand total of $499.99 on contract. You heard right -- those who opt to buy the dock at a later time will be asked to shell out five Benjamins, whereas that same tally on day one will also include the phone. It should be noted, however, that the bundle only applies if you also sign your name to a Data Pro plan and tethering add-on, so be sure you're down for that monthly hit before committing in haste.
And of course, today we found out that the Xoom tablet will be $800, and there are rumors that you will actually have to sign up for one month of data service to unlock the wifi capabilities of the tablet. (Which I still can't believe to be true - that has to be some sort of poor wording on the leaked ad, right?)

Nobody's going to buy that stupid Laptop dock package. You're saving $200 by buying it launch but when you're locked into a 2 year contract for tethering.. you end up paying more than if you were to buy the laptop dock separate after launch for $500 and not have to get the tethering plan.

Got mine today, feels like a nice phone.
Android, just what I expected... everything is great with Android for me, it fits me better than iOS.
The phone itself, the notification light is awesome (something I haven't had for a long time), the screen is crisp though I have heard a few issues with the screen. Camera is pretty damn good for a 5MP, above average.. better than I expected. I think the main test will be the battery.
Unfortunately, not getting 4G right now here, so I can't test the 4G speeds but it certainly feels fast.
The outside of the phone is also better than I expected. When they mentioned the back was plastic, I immediately thought it would be tacky. Instead, it's sturdy and it feels good in your hand.
It's also pretty fast in launching apps, I don't know what else I can compare it to right now because I don't have another Android device and it wouldn't be fair comparing to the iPhone because of different operating systems.
I would recommend this phone for anyone looking to get a new Android phone and is on AT&T.

I actually liked the look and feel of the HTC Inspire and the general feel of some of the Windows phones (the OS interface, that is). But... none of them moved me to buy them, although I almost sprung for the $49 upgrade for the Inspire. That's cheap as hell for that phone. Guess I'll keep using my iPhone 3G until the next batch of phones come out, although that Inspire is tempting me...

Yeah, it'll take a while for Gingerbread to come on this device... but honestly I'm just hoping that bootloader is unlocked sooner or later. I keep hearing mixed things about the bootloader being encrypted.
The HSPA+ situation is really comical considering how much AT&T has emphasized 4G. It's only available for 10 cities right now and it doesn't even work in those cities. I'm going to patiently wait though.
The Bionic is a great phone, the only difference that separated the Bionic and the Atrix was the webtop stuff... which honestly isn't that big anymore at least IMO. I tried out the laptop dock at the AT&T store and it was pretty cool but the price really makes you want to look the other way.
Verizon's LTE is pretty much going to take things away for the cellular industry until AT&T and T-Mobile... and probably even Sprint get to upgrading their networks.
If the bootloader isn't cracked by the time the Bionic comes out, I would go with an HTC phone such as that Thunderbolt.

As it's projected... it's just a matter of a few years before Android will take the throne for the most users. That's not why I switched from iOS to Android, but if you can read data and graphs well... Android is growing at an enormous rate. I think Google needs to take a bigger approach in it's marketing towards developers and get some more big names to commit to the market like Apple has done with their App Store.
Have you seen the daily android activation video on Youtube? It's pretty neat. Yeah, I agree 100%

I stopped by an AT&T store and checked out the Atrix. It seemed kinda cheesy looking when I held it. Too plasticky to me.
There's a reason the Inspire is cheaper though. It has less power, memory, and screen resolution than the Atrix.
I agree it looks and feels nicer though.
But I'll be getting the Atrix at the end of March when my contract is up. Hopefully they come up with a cheaper, better laptop dock (or why not a tablet dock?)

Exactly... the Inspire may feel better... but it's no where near the phone the Atrix is or capable of being. I know some disgruntled Inspire users tried to make the argument that because it's cheaper and on HTC, it's a better buy... but IMO that's just not the case when you look at smartphones ahead. You'll be doing yourself a favor by getting the hardware the Atrix has.

What is the best current ATT phone? I have the Captivate right now. Looking at the Atrix and Inspire. I like the big screen of the Inspire, but the Atrix seems faster. Samsung has a 4.5in dual processor phone coming (anyone know when) that I might also consider. Anything else on the horizon? I was excited about the Dell Android phone coming but it looks like it might already be lacking in the hardware department.

The 4.5 inch monster from Sammy isn't dual core which is highly unfortunate, although the Galaxy S II is. If the Galaxy S II is supported by CyanogenMod I will probably upgrade from my iPhone 4 (Previously owning G1, N1, G2). I think a lot of people fail to realize phones such as the Atrix may have less appeal than phones such as the Inspire because of software. Being able to root the Inspire and install Gingerbread (CM7) is a MAJOR plus. Also that no version of Android supports dual core CPU's except Honeycomb is a major factor.

Wanna know what my username is on XDA and Androidcentral?
Samsuck.
Stay away from Samsung, nice hardware... not too nice support. Sure community roms will keep it going but modifying is more difficult. Then again, at least it isn't a Motorola . I personally hate using Odin on Galaxy S devices.

So what are my best options? Anything else coming down the pipe soon? The fact that the inspire is basically the EVO (am I wrong?) and the Atrix has Motoblur, I'm kind of "meh" about em. What's gonna blow me away on ATT?

Might be a good choice if you want to root it, I don't think LG is known for locking their phones down like Motorola. Atrix could be a good choice if your not looking to root it and tweak it a whole lot but personally I would never buy a locked down phone with MotoBlur. And yes your 100% correct about the Inspire being a repackaged EVO

Atrix and Inspire aren't LTE capable. Might have to switch to Verizon.
Any chance they make LTE versions of these phones when ATT gets their LTE network up?

Yes, however I get the feeling AT&T is going to have some sort of delay with their LTE network and devices.
LTE is pretty amazing.

I might have to wait for the Bionic. I would prefer LTE and dual core.
Here it says Galaxy s2 might be an ATT and just HSPA+:

Yeah , I might skip out on the dual core, and get the Revolution due to its netflix capabilities. I got the Thunderbolt recently but I buy phones like crack, so I'm likely to get a new one soon.
Probable that AT&T gets it as well, but there's so many versions of the Galaxy S, I'm sure there will be a CDMA version.
Just like the Sony Xperia Play for Verizon, which recently got sent in to the FCC, it appears it still has a sim slot so it might be a world phone.

dual core, gig of ram, '4g', android... if only this phone was made available on t-mo...
/envious nexus s owner
wow... you honestly would rather have the atrix then the nexus s? I'm jealous you have one and im stuck on verizon and have ZERO phones with pure google. Honestly all motorolla phones besides the original droid are a steaming pile of ****. Why? Ninja blur or what ever you freakin call is the worst idea that ever graced an android phone. Its ugly and slows down the phone to a piece of ****. It doesnt matter if this phone had a a quad core processor with 2 gigs of ram the phone will still crawl because of motorolla's bloatware. And to top it all off, it has a locked bootloader so no custom roms to remove motorolla's **** software. Be lucky you have a nexus s... see at least you don't have to wait half a year for an android update.
Motorolla proves that you can have the best hardware in the market but with **** software it all goes down the toilet

This looks like a really good phone.
But is anyone worried about Motorola locking its bootloader so that it becomes harder to root?
Personally, I just love the quality and design of HTC. But the specs on this phone look to good.
you can root the phone but you cannot load custom roms. So basically you cannot install a gingerbread rom and are stuck with froyo untill motorolla remove their heads out of their asses. And that goes with any update to android.
Lets say half a year down the line they come out with a new version of android called ice cream. On a phone that has a unlocked bootloader i can immediately install a rom with ice cream has soon as a 3rd party dev makes one. For example the almost 2 year old droid which has an unlocked bootloader can install a rom with a brand new version of android while phones like the droid x or atrix that have unlocked bootloaders will have to wait till motorolla decides to update the phone which could take up to a whole god damn year. ex: droid 2, droid x do not have gingerbread yet. Though you can get gingerbread on the original droid which is a 1 year older phone.

Yes, in fact. Android is going to start changing this.

Motorola is by far the worst. HTC is most lenient, however there are some complications with the newer models. None for me, I was able to go crazy on the Thunderbolt, overclocked, customer rom customer kernel... etc
Btw, the Droid X does have a Gingerbread leak out

http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/03/27/breaking-download-leaked-official-gingerbread-android-2-3-3-update-for-droid-x/you know what funny.... my thunderbolt with a custom kernel out performs the atrix which has a dual core preprocessor. whats even funnier is that android does not support dual core yet. However it will be supported with the next version of android code named ice cream. But the sad thing about that is motorolla will probably not update the atrix with this new version of android probably half a year after ice cream comes out. So really there is no point of having a dual core motorolla phone.

Motorola is saying they will update the atrix to 2.3 this year.
Not defending Motorola, I've never owned one, just sayin'.
Personally, I dont want to put in a bunch of work rooting, getting custom kernel's, etc. If a stock Atrix with the new Motoblur and gingerbread is good, i'll get it.

I don't know if you're into gaming phones but even if you arent, the Sony Xperia Play (aka pspphone) should be out within a month or so, and rumor has that it runs stock 2.3, it's going to be a 3g phone i believe, not 4g lte.
I just posted in another thread, you can get a White unlocked Nexus S that works with AT&t now
